I only saw the two key scenes of the game. Here:

1) https://vk.com/video-12919375_456268836?t=2h8s
> I would expect a Level 2A/B referee to have the positional sense to move left before the (obvious) centre into the box, let alone the fourth best referee in the world's biggest football country, but he is caught flat-footed and misses the offence
> Just imagine if there was no VAR (easy to imagine on this afternoon..), and this handball was left unpunished; like Jones's in Forest vs. West Ham, that would be embarrasing
> Tierney misses a blatant(!!!!!) offside before the penalty... absolute basics, scandalous mistake
> Can someone please explain to me how this isn't DOGSO?! :D

2) https://vk.com/video-12919375_456268836?t=2h31m46s
> Kavanagh isn't concentrated enough to perceive anything(!!) from this scene himself; completely misses everything (it seems)
> Well done to Daniel Robathan, who is! Excellent concentration, rightly perceives Gabriel's VC, so red card is given
> Gabriel impedes the progress of his opponent without the ball is playing distance, then kicks at him, and the result is he gets the freekick and is only booked... right :D

Terrible impression of the officials from these scenes. Tierney should be suspended for his mistake, and Kavanagh hardly convinced either. Again, is incredible to me how a referee so deeply mediocre is ranked as our fourth best internationally (and yes, presenting these skills in the second/third division in Croatia, Bulgaria et al. where there is no VAR either to bail you out either (easy to see why they were so desperate to have it on for him today), you would be demoted).

I know it was a different referee but what is the difference between the red card for Emerson today and the tackle in this photo which was only a yellow?

Both should be red but Emerson's was a deliberate attempt to hurt his opponent in a nothing area of the FoP, not at all challenging for the ball. There is more to assessing SFP than point of contact or "if it isn't going to brake his leg then a booking is enough", I would politely suggest to jacksamuel21.

General Discussion / Re: Watford v Sunderland John Busby

I can understand why Busby played on (Sunderland player obviously is waiting for the contact in the back to generate a penalty decision), but the defender's actions are probably too clumsy/careless and I think that 'football expects' a penalty kick to be awarded here.

General Discussion / Re: A Madley/VAR - Chelsea v West Ham
« on: Sat 03 Sep 2022 17:06 »
What an absolute disgrace. Chelsea keeper mendy parries the ball straight to a West Ham player and VAR calls Madley to the screen for a foul by Bowen. Where is Bowen supposed to go??
This is the issue with VAR in England. Shouldn’t be getting involved as there’s no foul but Madley doesn’t have the bottle to stick to his decision. Our referees are scared of saying no!!

Completely agree. Newcastle disallowed goal is even worse!(!!). PGMOL comedy show goes on...

The inability of people here to actually get beyond various crusades - goalkeepers are awarded too many soft freekicks and we must stop it!!; diving and simulation isn't just sth for refs to consequently punish, it is morally disgusting!!; et al. - and properly analyse situations on their merits is quite jarring. I respect contrary opinions, that is what forums like this are all about(!), but people should really get beyond waving their badge of honour by saying stuff like "I guess you’re of the opinion that any touch on a goalkeeper should be a foul", it is a bit cringey to read, at least from my perspective.

From watching highlights:

- early Saka penalty appeal is a tight one, on the one hand you could never controvert a penalty call due to Mings clear holding, on the other, having a 'deeper' reading of the situation, is obvious that the attacker's only intention was to draw some kind of foul from the defender by stoping as he did... I think I'd have played on but penalty is surely expected call by fans?

- such a clear foul on Ramsdale for the 1-1 goal!(!!) :D, what on earth is fair about Kamara's actions, standing in front of the goalkeeper, arms wrapped around him, not challenging for the ball, you have to be an idiot not to realise this was pre-planned (unfair!) tactic by Villa, another direct corner kick goal; okay, I can understand arguing for no intervention because not c&o for PGMOL, but to not think this is a clear foul is comical...

As a general remark: Jones is a very poor referee (for best-league-in-the-world level anyway) IMO. Very flat-footed mover, as so many (too) muscular refs are, too poor decisions, not even much leadership charisma. Another who wouldn't reach 2nd/3rd division in most European countries :).

(let's wait for GG comment about how Jones is actually excellent... :P).

General Discussion / Re: P Bankes - Wolves V Newcastle
« on: Tue 30 Aug 2022 16:44 »
Not the best two weeks for Bankes, though he did do well (I think?) in tense-context Panathinaikos vs. Slavia Prague game before it:

- simply poor performance in Fulham vs. Brentford as perfectly stated by TTFL, at least one missed RC and no control

- ridiculous intervention in Newcastle vs. Man City (assessed as correct by PGMOL 🤡s, and by football sphere tbf)

- missed intervention in Southampton vs. Man Utd for clear handball (also assessed as correct by 🤡s at PGMOL, and rightly assessed as clear mistake by football sphere, please stop insulting fans intelligence eg. by telling them juggling the ball isn't handling offence...)

- many mistakes as excellently outlined by Arbitre anglais/Observeref8  (there is hope for our refereeing if you are part of it!) in Wolves vs. Newcastle

So many of our (FIFA!!) referees would not survive in even 2nd/3rd divisions of middle-ranking UEFA nations!

If the last sentence of this post is true then senior English refereeing is indeed in a parlous state but for my money the poster doth protest too much.So many of our ( FIFA !! ) referees not up to the standard of 2nd and 3rd divisions of middle-ranking UEFA nations !  I realise this is just an opinion backed up without a shred of empirical evidence but I am left wondering who are these referees? Surely not Taylor and Oliver, who are regularly appointed to major Finals,  neither I would say Pawson, Kavanagh Attwell or England. So whose left ? Are Madley, Bankes, Coote really not even 2nd/3rd division standard in other nations ? Perhaps so but somehow, from what I have seen from the lower ranking FIFA officials from other Uefa countries when they have refereed English teams, I doubt it.

I have gone on record as saying FIFA badges are handed out very easily these days but in England is it so much worse than everywhere else? Hmmmmm.

PGMOL coaches referees who are only able to take a back seat and never take a game by the scruff of the neck. You can mostly get away with this in our leagues, but in the conflict heavy games of - as just one example - Bulgarian football, many of our officials would sink verrryy badly because they'd have absolutely idea what to do, how to deal with such a game. Kavanagh's excruciatingly poor performance in the Real Madrid vs. Benfica Youth League final, case-in-point. In those leagues you need charisma, ability to spot (clear!!) SFPs/VCs, stronger foul recognition to even reach 2nd/3rd division, which I simply don't see in (too!) many of our officials.

Okay, you can say it is an issue of education/experience of such intensive games and so on, but: when you don't care about charisma on the pitch, when you don't really reward courageous decisions, have club marks even at PL level(!!!), have incredibly mediocre vetted 'match delegates' people, have the league essentially run the reffing with no independence, infuriate protesting players/managers who just want consistency/decent refs by saying a) at this level, you aren't just handling a game, you are managing an event s**t and b) 'we have the best referees in the world' (when even, as an example, Belarus has better refereeing than us IMO...), and prefer to focus on identity politics nonsense / trying to control the narrative through Gallagher, Dale Johnson et al rather than actually improve the refs(!!) -> this is the perfect environment to not only encourage, but actively reward pure mediocrity.

PGMOL institutionalises it! They are the enemies of good refereeing and our officiating will never improve whilst they are in existence.

Other defenders would have taken note: why the heck wouldn't you do the same in another game if the punishment is only going to be a caution...

1) finally the confirmation bias of a four-and-a-half minute YouTube video begins to run out
2) someone really must explain to Mr Bankes what an SFP is (clue: it doesn't have to result in a broken leg to be a red card)
3) what a spectacular game!! WOW.

General Discussion / Re: David Webb, Crewe v Northampton
« on: Sun 21 Aug 2022 12:57 »
Our local paper in Northampton has highlighted the poor quality of refereeing in the EFL quoting Nigel Pearson of Bristol City as saying he was thinking of withdrawing from football because of the poor standards in the leagues. Whatever, referees have always dropped howlers and why should they not do do now? Is it really worse now? I do not know as I do not watch much football at this level now.

I suspect that refereeing has improved upon the general standard of a generation or two ago but now the game is so much quicker, the gamesmanship so much more subtle and the scrutiny so much more forensic that it appears as if refereeing is getting worse because the mistakes, which have always been there, are now highlighted and debated in depth.

I disagree. To me, it is remarkable how much referees have not improved in the era when endless video training clips and education are de rigueur. It is absolutely startling how many key match incidents are wrongly assessed against this background. More-and-more of their discretion and common-sense is removed by time, and mediocrity - rather than excellence - is effectively rewarded. Pearson's comments were absolutely insufferable and the idea that the refs would make him quit is reminiscent of a spoiled child and should be laughed at, but: my general idea is that he is quite right about the level of officiating.

The referees at World Cup 1986 (often) drank alcohol on the days when they weren't officiating matches. This (rightly!) seems hilariously amateur to us nowadays. Of course, the game has changed for everyone in years since, but how on earth can one reconcile that the level of refereeing at this WC was ≈ as good compared to almost all since. In many cases, it was much better even! Something has gone very wrong...

The only positive area of development, without any doubt, is linesmen/assistant referees, who have gotten exponentially better with passing years. It is way too cheap and way too defensive of us to use the 'more cameras, more exposure, less tolerance' argument. More cameras should be able to show in detail all of the decisions that referees now get right due to being fitter and better trained! But, more-or-less, exactly the opposite is true.

And, unfortunately - VAR is only going to (and already has) made things much, much worse on that front. But, one must say that is really is 'of our (modern) time'. To rephrase the quite excellent Barry Davies quote about commentators: "Each generation of football gets the referees it deserves".

I think, Pre-VAR, we would have been disappointed had a referee not spotted the handball in real time.

Pre-VAR, it would have been an absolute scandal if this was missed!(!!!) Just imagine. Extremely poor miss by Jones.

I really think people are not seeing the wood for the trees in the SPA vs. DOGSO debate also. A defender has, in the six-yard box, made a goalkeeper-like save to try and stop a goal - sorry, but this simply has to be a red card. Other defenders would have taken note: why the heck wouldn't you do the same in another game if the punishment is only going to be a caution, it is a good bet. Sorry but it is just madness to me that a yellow card is even being entertained here...

What you permit, you promote.

The Daily Mail gives him 7.5.   Dont know what you to do in their eyes to get something better but to me at least 9.5

I really don't care what marks newspapers give each referee but if on their scale that correlates to sth like 8,3/4 level (standard expected level), then I'd agree with them on this occasion. Good start to the season for the SG1 officials. Taylor was always correct to wave away the (not infrequent) Crystal Palace penalty appeals, and gave three correct cautions - special mention for detecting + punishing Xhaka's dive (yes, you can caution for simulation not only in the penalty area! :P).

Though - Martin Tyler said something quite interesting, maybe I wasn't the only one who picked up on it. He spoke about attending a session with PGMOL where they informed the media about the directives being given to the Premier League referees this season - he alluded to some guidelines about foul recognition, but said about the rest, we were told to keep the guidelines secret. I'm sorry, what?!? What on earth do PGMOL have to hide, Mr Riley...
