Talk in various quarters of England in line for his white badge shortly. Is he really worthy? I have my strong reservations but what do I know?
Correct. FA have nominated him for FIFA 2022 and he will attend UEFA introductory course in Cyprus. As a professional judgement, I share your reservations Hendo.

Just as an interesting comparison, here are the stats for newly promoted referees across some of the other big European leagues:
La Liga (15 rounds): Miguel Ortiz Arias - 8 games Alejandro Muniz Ruiz - 7 games 8 is the maximum number any referee has done
Ligue 1 (16 rounds): Pierre Gaillouste - 7 games Romain Lissorgue - 6 games 9 is the maximum number any referee has done
Bundesliga (13 rounds): Matthias Jollenbeck - 5 games Tobias Reichel - 4 games Tobias Welz - 4 games 6 is the maximum number any referee has done
Premier League (15 rounds)- Jarred Gillett - 3 games John Brooks - 1 game Michael Salisbury - 1 game Tony Harrington - 0 games 12 will be the maximum number any referee has done
*Premier League stats include the forthcoming round, the other leagues don't.
Without being pedantic, Welz is a former UEFA 1st Cat who was out injured for some time; he was promoted to the BL for season 10/11. Thanks very much for collating this info though!

youtu.be/l0y3Z8p4mH4?t=256 -> defender puts his leg out to prevent the attacker executing a shot, penalty to be given
youtu.be/l0y3Z8p4mH4?t=447 -> hmmm, a very tricky decision, I had to watch this a few times inc. slow motion to be sure what happened; attacker gets the first touch and then when trying to run forward his left leg touches the back of his opponent's leg, causing him to stumble; penalty call would be everything but a mistake, however given that the defender had, despite the attacker's touch, probably won the position and was in a better place to take possession of the ball, actually I prefer play on; I guess most people didn't look the deeply though and a penalty would be the more expected / less controversial call
youtu.be/l0y3Z8p4mH4?t=531 -> very clear penalty in my opinion, arm way out from the body and up in the air, deflecting the ball away; Martin should start dynamically sprinting after the long ball into the penalty area, he doesn't, and is simply too far away to make a sound decision; here in England they are so passive, but the fourth official should be able to help his team leader here, he would have a great angle to help with this call(!!); clear mistake
So not the best afternoon for Stephen Martin based on these scenes :/.

Two Everton players carded for diving… looked like both were spot on.
Refreshing indeed! I wish Tierney took a similar zero tolerance attitude to the frequent mobbing / dissent incidents too Agree with you, good 1H for him, always staying calm with intense ambience / players.

Now nineteen games through, the last two will (I think!) be of interest to RtR users: England vs. Morocco - tough game in the heat for Paraguay's Gabriel González, who famously sent off Ray Wilkins for throwing the ball at him Mexico vs. Paraguay - George Courtney whistled 78(!!) fouls in this game, still a WC record; extremely challenging game for the Englishman who awarded a very late penalty at the end The other seventeen matches are interesting as well

If that's a penalty, they may as well do away with reams of interpretations and mealy mouthed definitions and just say "if the ball touches the hand or arm it's a penalty".
An hideous decision, fortunately of no great consequence.
I admire your fortitude in defending such an appalling decision and the introduction of a new criteria "tense arm" to add to the rest of the nonsense. Perhaps you can advise how arm tension is measured, in what units and what the acceptable limits are ?
I find the comments on here frustrating at times. - I wasn't *actually* defending the decision, I am quite sure that PGMOL will assess this as a mistake and in Nield's position I would have never given this penalty (in England) - I was only trying to give an insight from a different perspective which, I assumed, would be appreciated by RtR users (this would be a very clear penalty in most of Europe) - It is a bit sad IMO that your reflexive answer is to try and portray me as an idiot who defends the ref's decision in any circumstance; a) I would like to think my contributions to RtR would show that I have some idea of what I'm talking about, and, b) I analyse performances / situations objectively and fairly - You don't even try to understand the nuance in assessing handlings at the moment! Of course, that's your choice and there are many more important things in life(!), but your tone, moaning about it as if in a fan's forum, doesn't paint you in the best light, at least in my opinion

That's a clear penalty for UEFA - enlarging the body surface (tense arm) to block a shot.

I find it odd that Sergei Ivanov was appointed to referee a match involving two countries (Slovania vs Cyprus) in the same group as Russia. I appreciate that the outcome could not in any way affect Russia's standing in the group, that a very large number of appointments had to be made in this double round of fixtures and that there are still problems with Covid-related travel restrictions, but even so, I would have thought that somebody more obviously neutral could have found somewhere.
Agree but is standard practice (also at CL level) for years.

The SYC, both penalties for handling and the disallowed goal were correct (interventions) IMO. The caution at the first penalty was unnecessary though, and booking Abraham was a complete neglection of common-sense. (DISCLAIMER - I didn't watch this game in full ). By the way - Obrenovič is a very good referee. I watched him handle a title-deciding match in Cyprus (where referees find bombs under their mothers' cars and are regularly attacked and threatened) and he was superb, in addition to a great performance in France vs. England at the U17 EURO in 2019. He is one of the biggest talents in European refereeing, in my estimation. I don't think San Marino vs. England is the best material to determine if a referee is talented or not, to be fair (and I'm sure everyone here agrees!).

Thoroughly enjoyable game for the neutral. 2 well behaved teams battling it out, respect towards each other & the match officials.
Well done Michael & team - you can be proud of your performance & contribution to the game.
Agreed. Especially in the first half, there were some moments where it felt like everything could boil over, but Oliver kept a calm head, and in the end, it was all rather academic for him. His ability to communicate on the players level (as former top-scene youth player himself), even across culture lines in international matches(!), is quite unmatched I think. Good job indeed by our English team, well done to them.

Swabey only cautioned a clear DOGSO RC (77'), failed to caution to in two OtB incidents (AA, reckless strike/blocking), and generally failed to change his approach in these last minutes when the game heated up. A shame, because I liked his manner generally in the minutes that I've watched (75'-).
Would be curious if anyone watched the full match?

A contemporary, match-by-match, analysis of the officiating at FIFA World Cup 1986 can be found on the link below - I will try to update the blog as often as possible, so far we are through the first six matches. Any engagement would be most welcome! http://wc86refs.blogspot.com

Both are crystal clear DOGSO red cards. Both should be gotten right on the FoP (and to Marriner's merit, he did) and if not, VAR should intervene to recommend a RC. Oliver and Gillett made poor mistakes.
Football gets really p*ssed off with 'us' when we lecture them why "yellow card is still acceptable", "VAR was correct to support", "not clear and obvious", blah blah blah, and overcomplicate simple situations / decisions.

It should not have happened so if he played the 4 mins added time in the second half, that is wrong in law. Extract from Law 7 states:
"The Referee must not compensate for a timekeeping error during the first half by changing the length of the second half".
Case closed.
You are misunderstanding what happened here. In the de jure sense of the LotG, the first half never finished during the fifteen minute break, but when the players switched ends during the 'second half', that was 'halftime'. So the LotG weren't violated in this instance.
