Why is Bramall doing another game?
My view is that the first dozen games of the season are critical to the way the season pans out, team's confidence, self belief etc. They are critical in how the season develops and so the best experienced referees (and VARs) should get them. Those that have used VAR, experienced big match occasions and being the centre of attention. Thereafter during the season you can gradually introduce newer referees to games which are perhaps less critical, mid table if you get my drift. Still important but after a dozen games you generally know which games are "big" matches. While it is nice to see inexperienced referees get games early this season, they should have had more in the latter half of last.
Last season the PGMOL knew who was retiring at the end of the season, knew who the VARs would be at the start of the next season and rather than stick with the old guard, introduce all the new or likely new referees gradually so that they do not have to learn during the key part of the new season.llels elsewhere in life.
I don't really agree with the suggestion that newer referees shouldn't be used for the first few months of the season. It sounds like he did well in his first game so deserves a second.
So basically you're saying the approach with the new SG1 members last year is the correct one to follow, even though that approach was widely and frequently criticised on this forum. I think you're in a minority of one with that!!
