General Discussion / Re: M Oliver - Liverpool Man City
« on: Sun 10 Mar 2024 19:14 »
I personally didn't think it was a penalty as Doku won the ball. Yes he caught him with the follow through but personally don't think that was a clear and obvious error and so var was right not to get involved

He didn't "win the ball" not that would mean a boot to the chest isn't a foul anyway, mac alliteration chests it and it glances the foot, it's not much different to a player who catches the top of the ball on the way to hitting someone high on the shin it's still a foul

Mike Dean originally said penalty at first in commentary then they got another angle and it looked like Doku got the ball before the main and he said no penalty on the 2nd replay
He has a lot of history of saying one thing and then changing it to whatever var has decided

Had to go out so didn't see the incident live but how can anyone with unlimited replays say that's not a penalty, can have some sympathy with the on field official not given it but another var failure.

Everything I seen live was well handled

Beyond maybe a yellow card for Walker perfect performance so far

Clear penalty given, completely misses it coming off the Southampton players foot twice.

As I’m typing he also misses the biggest deflection on what should have been a corner for Southampton.

With regards to the penalty claim, in the stadium I thought it looked like a cast iron penalty. Having seen a replay, I woukd now categorise it as a dive. Ballard is heading into the box, his touch is too heavy and knows he won’t get to the ball, his legs buckle in a weird fashion before any touch from the Leicester defender and he hits the deck. For me, never a penalty and if it was given against my team I would be furious!

Generally thought he was one of the better refs we’ve had the pleasure of this season. Quite laid back in style. Time keeping definitely not a strong point - only 4 added second half despite many subs and a caution for time wasting - think it’s safe to say the directive has stopped!

I’m glad you’ve said this. As a Leicester fan (so biased), while he does grab him, the theatrics from Ballard for me make it a dive. I’m not seeing the same ‘cast iron’ penalty that others are.

Aside from that, his refereeing style seemed to contribute to sucking all of the energy out of the game, which didn’t really help my team get any rhythm once we scored (though that’s our own problem to figure out).

Hopefully he’ll learn and fix these issues in time.

Watch the legs don’t get distracted by the pull on the shoulder

I forgot to add another game where the time wasting rules from the beginning of the season have gone out of the window

4 incidents I disagree with today

2 fouls when Leicester were in behind that just weren’t not even defenders appealed.
Hand ball in the box by Leicester var gives it he probably couldn’t see it
Ballard dragged down when in behind he has no excuse to not give it, if that’s in the premier league he isn’t refereeing there the next week.

Other than that he was fine

Seemed to have a good game, got all of the big decisions right

The penalty appeal where he stood on the foot it’s one as a fan I would want for me but not against me and I’ve seen it go both ways but it shouldn’t be a foul

A bit of a heated situation in this game with a goal as the full time whistle is going as a cross is played in Bellingham, there’s a clip showing him put the whistle to his mouth pull it away and as the player is crossing it in changing his mind, that definitely didn’t help him.

Can’t comment on the rest of his performance as only seen this clip

Dale Johnson's explanation on why he thinks last night's incident was different from League Cup final - https://twitter.com/DaleJohnsonESPN/status/1762955799918186943

(One other thing I noticed him tweeting is that MLS are introducing a system where a player needs to leave the pitch within 10 seconds when being subbed (with some exceptions) otherwise the substitute cannot come on for 60 seconds and they'll be down to 10 players.)

So we are saying it’s more like RB Leipzig’s disallowed goal V Real Madrid

General Discussion / Re: Chris kavanagh -Carabao cup final

Disallowed Liverpool goal is 100% correct and fully in accordance with the current interpretation of Law11. Caicedo's nasty foul was SFP imo but not surprised with any non-intervention there. He should have cottened on to Chelsea's early spoiling tactics a bit quicker but Caicedo aside, I'm struggling to see any CLEAR cards missed by Kavanagh.

Not perfect, but I thought Chris Kavanagh's performance was generally okay, especially taking into account the unwritten 'don't make yourself the centre of attention in a final' rule (ie. not immediately showing early YCs to (Chelsea) players).

A yellow card offence is a yellow card offence whether it takes place in the 1st minute or the 90th

I really don’t think it has been that bad. But then it depends on your search for perfection at all times. I guess.

I’m also going be controversial with the Liverpool disallowed goal. I actually think it’s a good spot. If you’ve got half an ounce of tactical awareness on a football pitch, then you can see the Chelsea player who is blocked by a Liverpool player in an offside position would have been the better side of Virgil and would have almost certainly won the header, not leaving the space for the goal to be scored.

There will be arguments that say this happens all the time in these situations, and, it does happen a lot however, this has a clear material impact on the situation in my opinion.

The issue is consistency why have we suddenly decided on a new standard in a final on judging offside? I’d say inconsistency to the rest of the season and game is the biggest complaint
