General Discussion / Re: Referees travelling expenses

They are paid a fee for the match, but the other costs (flights, hotel, other travel) is dealt with either centrally or by the home club.

All step 5's & 6' will now be supply leagues with L4 refs, and god knows what level on the line
It will be whatever they get - so likely to be L5 & L6's on promotion track. So as JCFC moans about the NWC Div 1 being the league of old AR's; he can add NWC Prem as well next year.

It will be interesting to see what the Step 5 club feel about the perceived drop in refereeing standard to L4.

Also, note that some Step 6 league in the South lose their supply league status (so no L4's) on them but a couple of league (currently Step 7) in the North will retain their Supply league status in the short-term to ensure that the referees have sufficient coverage.

There's currently an inconsistency as to what steps level 3 and 4s do across the country.  In most of the southern leagues step 5 is refereed by level 4s and steps 4 and 3 are refereed by level 3s.  In some leagues though, such as the Eastern Counties, and some leagues in the North I believe, step 5 is refereed by L3s with L4s refereeing at step 6.  This has always struck me as grossly unfair and uneven, especially at L3 where it is a single merit table countrywide, as that merit table is comparing people refereeing at step 3 with those refereeing at step 5.

I would guess this change will sort that discrepancy out.

At what level are the supply leagues nationally?

In Yorkshire, the Supply leagues are 3 * Step 7 (which is one pool) + 1 division at Step 6 (with its own pool of referees). I think that it is similar with the North West Counties and the Northern league.

Which step 5 leagues are covered by L4 as opposed to L3's?

General Discussion / 20/21 NLS restructuring

An email from the FA about potential changes in refereeing structure following the changes to the NLS for 20/21. Anybody got any further information?

Changes to National League System/Refereeing Pyramid – Season 2020/21

As many of you will be aware, the on-going restructure of the National League System will be completed in readiness for the start of season 2020/21. These changes will result in the creation of a “pure” football pyramid from Step 1-Step 6, including the creation of additional divisions at Step 3, Step 4 and Step 5, and the repositioning of what is currently Step 7 outside of the System to be known as ‘Regional NLS Feeder Leagues’ – this bridging the gap between County and National League System football.

These changes have necessitated a review of the refereeing structure. During this review it has become apparent that the refereeing pyramid will need to adapt to the changing football environment to ensure consistency of appointments both in terms of the type/balance of appointment (referee v assistant referee) and the level of match officials used on a particular step in the National League System.

As a consequence, the FA Referees’ Committee unanimously agreed to changes to align the refereeing pyramid as closely as possible with the National League System and thereby provide a consistent environment for referees operating at a specified level, whilst aiming to retain accessibility for referees nationwide.

Discussions are taking place to finalise the necessary changes and we will be communicating directly with impacted parties (leagues, match officials, County FAs) in December, both on a national and regional basis. In addition to written correspondence, we will be holding face to face meetings.

It sounds like chaos! Danny Gratton becomes the 3rd referee to take charge of the match - not sure I’ve ever seen this before!

Something similar happened at Millwall last season, but Tony Harrington was replaced before the match so didn’t actually start the game before Lee Swabey was himself replaced in the first half!

I wonder when Danny last referees a match of any importance. I don't know he level, but he will have been L3 and a specialised assistant, so could have been 3 years since.

They will have had to have the other assistant for ball in / out.

Would be interesting to see the full match simply to analyse the referee / assistant positioning.

The standard of timekeeping by so called top referees in the game is appalling.

Clearly they are not up to it, even with a 4th official to help.

In this game we have had numerous VAR’s a penalty given and two dismissals which took 3 & half minutes on its own, not forgetting 4 goals and all the substitutions and it all added up to 4 minutes.

If any game proves we need timekeepers then this is it.

But any longer delay would have impacted the TV adverts, which fund the Champions League  :P

The impact of time keepers will be the stadium clock will stop - no more added time, no more Fergy time.
And at what level would you bring in?

General Discussion / Re: Millwall v Leeds United

Usually Mac I agree with you, however in this case I think you are wrong.
The 2nd Leeds player is in prime position to challenge and has got the ball by the time the Millwall diver has hit the floor
Thought it was a poor decision at the time and seen nothing to change my mind.
Rescind the red, ban the diver and give James a bit of extra coaching

Sorry, but once the referee gave the penalty a RC was his only option. Failure to do so would have meant he had failed to apply law correct, with a corresponding downmark on his observation report.

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay
Garforth Town   3   v   2   Shildon
Lee Hible (Stocksbridge); unlisted, but JCFC would stake 5p each on Tony Murphy and Gavin Hock.

You are definitely right on one of them.

I struggle to understand why experience is needed in the role of VAR.

I think that it is the confidence that the in-field referee will have in the advice being given. As we saw in the WWC, some VAR decisions were doubtful at best but the inexperience of both the referee and VAR in top level football meant they followed each others mistakes.

I would agree 2 years down the line, experience will be less important but initially the VAR should be of the same standard as the on-field referee.

Simply moves to VAR activities. Keeps the experience within the game.

Wont be a loss to the overall standard.

Interesting that Ross Joyce has a 4O appointment on Premier League, in preference to Championship referees.

As this thread returns to haunt you once again, we start with a puzzle:-

Early last week the NCEFL website proudly announced that the referee appointments had been posted, but repeated attempts to find them over the next few days led to the conclusion that they had been done so in the internet equivalent of invisible ink, with the appointment for May still appearing.

However, when Googling the referee post match on Saturday, up came the NCEFL appointments page, with all the relevant details. Back to the NCEFL site today, we are once again in May.

Given that my computer skills are those of a below-average geriatric technophobe, could someone please explain
a) where I am going wrong
and
b) how (other than by Googling a random referee or several) I can find the relevant details in the future?

Fortunately next weekend sees the FA Cup start, so that problem does not apply.

The hyperlink from the tabs takes you to last years matches. They seemed to have changed the page name, the following takes you to last Saturdays's fixtures. I suspect that this will be updated, once somebody at NCEL is aware

Does anybody know of the referees promoted from L3 to L2B at the end of last season?

Football League - L1 & L2 / Re: PlayOffs 2019
« on: Mon 20 May 2019 08:18 »
I am flabbergasted. Here we have a ref who has not refereed a game since he made a pig's ear of Walsall v Southend on Good Friday, 19th April, but now taking charge of the FA Vase final followed by a Playoff Final. Do we know why he has not appeared for 4 weeks? Injury, suspension? And is he actually going to take charge of Sunday's Vase Final? An outrageous appointment in my view and an insult to the many, many FL refs who ply their trade week in week out without bother. Sorry but that's the way I see it!

And I and I am sure many others wholeheartedly agree. He certainly is the favoured son for reasons which completely baffle me. After his disasterous performance at Walsall he was lucky to keep the FA Vase Final but then to get this Final too is just taking the p***.
But doesn’t he work in some capacity for the FA? Not that I am insinuating anything of course...........😛

Yes, he is the RDO for North Riding CFA.
