Now is the time where the likely prospects for promotion from L2A to L1 happens. Anybody identified the likely L2a promotion candidates?

General Discussion / Re: D COOTE - Everton v Spurs

A bit disappointing to see Pickford not pick up a yellow after the incident, running 40 yards and shouting obscenities in the refs face.

The FA should be charging Everton with failure to control their players. A nice fine will certainly help their FFP breaches....

VAR IS BRILLIANT!!!

Any interesting match - a brilliant award of the 2nd Grimsby penalty for the hit out by the SOTON centre-half. But very disappointed about the time taken for the VAR review for the 1st penalty and that the AR2 got Walcott's offside for the disallowed goal wrong.

Without VAR, Grimsby would have been incorrect eliminated from the Cup. Probably the first match they have played with it in operation

From an unbiased Mariner.

General Discussion / Re: Webb Calls emergency meeting

They may well be match altering decisions, but are no worse than some of the goal scoring opportunities the players miss during EVERY game.

Yes, action need to be taken to eliminate these mistakes, but the impact needs to be viewed in context of the season and how many mistakes the players make.

If we are dismissing the officials for just these, then any player who misses an "open goal" or a "one on one" should also be dismissed.

I am sure you have all seen the rant by the Dorking manager / Chairman / whatever other jobs he does after Saturday's match.

The National League is made up of mostly FT players (at the top of their game) but the referees are still on their promotion track. He doesn't seem to realise that the best referees get promoted to the EFL and the NL is left with new trainees to fill their spots. It is a similar  point made by the Women's league and League 1 & 2 clubs.

Since the players are FT, should we be looking at expanding the pool of FT referees. I know it would cost the FA a massive sum, but the extra training and resources must improve the quality of the officials. Also, the FT could employ ex-pro's (which is what they want to do) and get them though the system. With the EPL/EFL. NL and WSL there would be 65-70 matches per weekend to be covered. Working on the normal 1.5 officials per match, you would need c100 referees and c100 assistants (as some assistants may wish to retain their jobs and not become FT).

Any thoughts

General Discussion / Re: Sam Purkiss - Swindon Vs Grimsby

Firstly, best wishes to Sam.

I think Leggy makes some good points. One of the match officials needing to be replaced is a pretty rare event and when someone has had to step in to fill an unfamiliar position I can't think of too many occasions where it has gone terribly wrong. I think there's some sense to having both a Fourth official referee and a reserve assistant for the occasional game such as finals but I don't really think the resources would be justified for general league matches.

I recall one of the FA Cup matches last season had 2 officials go down. So, one of the AR's had to take over and since the clubs could not agree on a replacement, the two of them had to continue. Both of the AR's were specialist AR's. I recall the AR which took over last refereed a competitive match over 3 years previously.

Question: is a red card a 1 or 3 match ban these days?
Should be a  3 match ban.

The FA to launch clampdown on referee abuse. It is hoped the new measures will help to both increase referee retention from the Premier League to the grassroots

The Football Association will launch a major clampdown on referee abuse next year amid increasingly toxic behaviour at all levels of the game.

A wide-ranging new "Referee Strategy" will be published in February to improve referee retention and availability while reducing on-field hostilities.

Multiple amateur leagues were cancelled over the past year after a shocking upturn in violence and abuse, with 380 players and coaches banned.

It is yet to be decided exactly what new sanctions will be, but campaign groups have called for bigger fines and bans for individuals as well as clubs, with potential stadium closures another option open to the authorities.

The FA's overall aim is to make refereeing a more welcoming environment, especially for minority groups, from the grass-roots to the Premier League.

In recent months, governing body chiefs have already been taking a more proactive approach in tackling abuse of officials at all levels. Jurgen Klopp, for example, was handed a touchline ban earlier this year after his initial punishment was not deemed severe enough by the FA.

In the grass-roots, meanwhile, the FA has held a national "silent weekend" to stop abusive behaviour from the touchline at youth matches. The major challenge within amateur and grass-roots football is referee retention on a week in, week out basis rather than overall numbers.

The new strategy is still at the consultation stage, but the aim is understood to be ensuring referees are treated as "people and not commodities".

A tougher stance against inappropriate behaviour and abuse will be outlined in the new document. A key ambition is to boost numbers of referees from minority groups to make refereeing more reflective of society.

Grass-roots sporting leaders have repeatedly warned of amateur players aping behaviours in the elite as abuse against referees surge at all levels.

Martin Cassidy, chief executive of Ref Support UK, has been calling for years for tougher sanctions. "We will welcome any escalation of punishments for anyone who abuses or threatens or physically assaults the referee," he told Telegraph Sport on Tuesday.

"We have asked the FA, and we're waiting for a reply, but we would like to see anyone who abuses or assaults a match official to face points deducted for their team. We also feel the FA should act automatically if anyone's found guilty of abuse or threats to a referee under the age of  18. That should be an automatic points deduction too. There needs to be more prevention that ensures that teams and clubs are held accountable for who watches their game and who is on the sidelines at grassroots level."

The FA took the unusual step of writing to every grassroots participant, whether coach, player or parent, at the start of the season to warn that "inappropriate" behaviour went too far last season and that they will consider harsher sanctions.

Pete Carden, who is 72 and has been refereeing for 36 years in Manchester, has also described how abuse is the worst he has ever known in the amateur game.

He says he was the victim of two match-related assaults in the space of a year. At the elite end, the FA used its right of appeal in November after Liverpool manager  Klopp initially escaped a touchline ban after his red card against Manchester City the previous month. After a review, he was subsequently forced to sit in the stands against Southampton.

Lets see a start with Pickford of Everton for the "in your face" shouting and the finger wagging at the assistant in the Man City game. The only way to stop abuse is with high-level post match punishments, where the referee hasn't seen it.

General Discussion / Quality of referees
« on: Mon 17 Oct 2022 08:03 »
All we get from spectators, players and team officials at all levels, is that the referees aren't good enough for them...

But given the lack of numbers becoming referees and joining adult football, how do we improve? We as referees, know that to replace those at the top of the profession is a 3-5 years turnaround.

But can money turn this around? Will the FA invest significant more money in referee development?

Given Gareth Southgate is reported to be on a £4M bonus for winning the world cup, could this be available to the CFA for their development programs? But this would be only c £100K per CFA

It’s being reported that both sides are going to contest the red cards at the end.

If they get thrown out the FA need to stamp a hard foot on behaviour like that when teams brawl. It happens far too much and clubs aren’t being punished hard enough.

The FA should study the TV footage, and identify any other players would are guilty of VC, regardless of whether the referees sent them off.

At grassroots, there would be points deductions for this, so why not at the top of the table....

General Discussion / Re: A TAYLOR - Liverpool v Man C
« on: Mon 17 Oct 2022 07:52 »
Klopp and Guardiola need to made an example of… absolutely abhorrent behaviour from them both and I applaud Taylor having the balls to red card (Edited just NO!) Klopp.

Now, it’s over to you at the FA…. deal with them HARD.

So, at grassroots level, he would charged with an aggravated breach for the verbal assault. The guidelines are 6 to 12 matches.

Roy Keene, saying he is showing passion for his team, is as helpful as a fart in a spacesuit..... Grassroots referees are quitting every week after they get at weekends. And given the the Merseyside Youth Football League cancelled all their matches this weekend for abuse towards referees.

What do we think the ban we will get should be?

I will start - 6 weeks, so effectively he can until after the World Cup off. And 3 weeks of being banned from all football places (including the training ground). If the FA want to help grassroots football, here is a prefect example.

28
A simple decision - No 6. slow to retrieve the ball, then rolling down the line. Defo - delay of game....

Just about as obvious as it can get. You also have to ask what is the Assistant on that side watching, as he would’ve had an unbelievably good view to help Tierney out in real time.

If that s not a penalty at Old Trafford this season, then Ronaldo is going to cry a lots for the tumbles he takes in the penalty area. All three involved (R, AR & VAR) should be have a weeks rest.

At L4, that would be a missed KMI and a substandard mark.

Has to be Monzul for the final methinks if England and France progress.

If France progress and England don't-Welch
If England progress and France don't- Frappart
If both progress - Monzul
If both don't- either frappart or Welch

Well, you have guessed correctly
