General Discussion / Re: Leicester v Wolves (A Taylor)

Just seen Leicester penalty on SKY

In the current climate it was a penalty.

I don't like it and had it been given against a team I support I would have been right vexed but that's the law

It is and that is the problem...

I think it's also worth saying on this that it sounds like FIFA are developing an 'instant' system to judge offside which will come in within next two years and will automatically inform VAR when a player is offside so there won't be the need for long waits at least.

So all players are going to have all of their 'offsideable' extremities microchipped in order to provide the 'instant' technology similar to GLT?
Or are they going to have another human set of eyes in the box to only deal with offsides in order to provide 'instant' decisions, that will still rely on the human eye interpretation of the lines?

He's tackled straight legged with a high foot, you are always in trouble if that makes contact and the referee sees it.  The handball is harsh, but his arm is up high so again is taking a big risk.

There can be no-one in football, bar maybe a few referees and administrators, who think that is the type of offence that the handball law is intended to penalise.

Especially galling when a tackle just as reckless and dangerous against Ipswich today isn't even penalised, a penalty far more blatant isn't given and they are knocked out by a clearly offside goal.

Very poor from Abbas Khan and I don't think Andy Haines has got many, if any, seasons ahead of him.

How was the 'winner* not offside?

Paul Howard has our TV game, first season FL official, not heard much about him previously?

They would do well to watch Andre Marriner and Lee Mason's performance last night regarding the Leicester late penalty award...no messing about, perfect example of how to do it.   8) ;)

I think the decision to reduce the punishment to a one-game ban is very sensible (and I say that as the spouse of a Southampton supporter). It has long annoyed me that the disparity in the level of punishment for an offence which, if we are being honest, could have been sanctioned with either a yellow or a red card is so great - three matches for a red but simply counting towards the totting-up procedure for a yellow. As in so many other respects, Germany has a better disciplinary system than this country, the standard punishment for a red being a on-game ban, which is liable to be increased only if the offence is deemed particularly serious. In no way was Digne's offence (imo) particularly serious, even if it was technically SFP (there is of course a separate debate to be had about whether the law relating to SFP is right or should be changed).
I recall an incident a few years ago when Schneiderlin, when playing for Southampton, was sent off for a minor slap to the face of an opponent and had his three-game standard ban reduced on appeal to one on the ground that the standard ban was manifestly excessive. I guess that the Digne case fell within the modern equivalent of that procedure. Perhaps Manchester United should have done the same thing in relation to the recent Martial incident?

Although I agree with your proposal/thoughts regarding differing levels of Red Cards, I do not agree that this wasn't worthy of a three match ban.
It was an intentional and cowardly challenge after failing to illegally stop the player previously, that had the potential to give the player a long term agonising achilles injury.

I will always try and justify a 'disagree' post. In this case, there was clear and direct interference with the Leicester goalie, and the referee, via VAR and AR who flagged, was right to disallow the goal. Redstripe - nothing personal, I note that you were asking the question rather than putting forward a view.

The camera from directly behind the goal showed that the Arsenal player did not interfere in any way with the GK.

I certainly would have no fears if he was pencilled beside us again - though I have long noticed a trend that referees come up to the top flight and impress and then over time become pickier and pickier - Don Robertson the one who doesn't seem to have reverted.

Unlike the Celtic manager, I thought Willie Collum also had a superb game today to follow on from the performance I watched yesterday.  Three penalties were absolutely spot on, tried to play an advantage at the last one and if he made one mistake it was not penalising a push in the lead up to Celtic's second goal.  As for the Celtic manager I think he may have been trying to deflect some of his failings somewhere else.

Unusually, I watched the Aberdeen-Celtic game mainly because a player, who wasn't good enough for us in the Fourth Division, is now a first choice for Aberdeen to see how he is getting on.  Like you, I though Mr Collum had a great game.

David Coote has been relieved of his duties for a spell according to media reports. If that’s true I don’t know why he was officiating last night.

The contradictions go on: if he made an error then surely Pickford should be retrospectively punished? If he didn’t make an error why is he being suspended? The pathetic statements from PGMOL have covered every outcome: he saw it, he didn’t see it, he didn’t know he could get involved for VC/SFP, he didn’t think it was VC/SFP etc. etc.

The “leadership” is appalling.

I've not seen anything suggesting he's been suspended, unless you've seen different?

The media have reported this week's appointments, where Coote obviously doesn't have a PL middle or VAR - he's due to be Fourth Official at a PL match on Saturday and then refereeing a Championship match on Tuesday.

It was said on Talksport this morning but not backed up by any evidence aside from the "it has been reported" ...

For crying out loud, what does Andy Madley have to do to get a Premier League game?!

Six games in and a FIFA referee has only had one PL game. It's appalling management.

And Michael Oliver has had a game EVERY WEEK

In between trips abroad for FIFA/UEFA matches.

They are going to make him ill, he will end up exhausted.

...and miss KMI in games if he's not careful...

I think Mr Coote needs sending on a VAR refresher course or perhaps more wisely kept right away from it.

We've had many a discussion on here about who should actually do the role of VAR & it's been suggested many times that being a top flight referee does not automatically mean you will make a good VAR - Mr Coote appears to be proof of that fact!
This stupid requirement that you need to be able to pass a fitness test needs to be dropped, whether it's a PGMOL or FIFA rule. All the talent "sitting on the bench" of retired officials who are simply not this incompetent and can still give to the game and means our current on field officials are slightly less fatigued from the constant travelling.

Something most of us agree with.  It's not like with an AAR or 4O where there is a chance of having to take over as ref through an injury so I cannot understand that logic at all. Don't know who the ruling comes from to be honest but it's one of the less sensible ones shall we say!

Isn't it to maintain their currency by being active officials, I'm sure that I asked and received a reply many moons ago?
But it doesn't appear to apply to the VAAR.  Who replaces the VAR if he/she gets and injury?

Compare & contrast the viewing/spectating experience from the following:
1. The RL Cup Final at Wembley. Liam Moore & TMO Ben Thaler - excellent. As were the BBC's commentary team & studio analysis team.
2. The European Rugby Final at Bristol. Nigel Owens again demonstrating how to handle a big game - with added "tension" at the end of the game as he & Ian Davies (TMO) discussed the finer points of timekeeping. Some things don't change - I remember Chris White having huge difficulty at the end of a 6N match many years ago when, with hindsight, it would have helped if the officials had agreed a protocol for timekeeping communication at the end of each half.
3. 2nd Bledisloe match. Gus Gardner crystal clear.
4. The Merseyside derby. It's difficult to know what was said by whom when. My gut feel is that radio commentators have a slight advantage as they're not being bombarded by various screens and studio instructions so are able to concentrate a bit more. Most television commentators & studio analysers can't or won't listen.
Perpetuation of VAR discussion primarily because everyone is almost having to guess. It could be so much better for everyone if things changed & our PL officials were "miked live" (& were allowed to have in-match discussion which, I believe, they are not allowed to have unless VAR intervenes & even then the conversation is at best limited).

Added to the fact that in your first three examples, the commentators and their pundits know the Laws of their individual sports.
The ignorance of the Laws by those in the football commentator/pundit seats is astounding and adds immensely to the confusion of the viewer/listener.

Aguero crossed a line imo and I would say the same if it had been a male AR - just in case anyone hasn't seen it:

https://twitter.com/happygaffer_/status/1317548538910396418

Didn't see the rest of the game.

I must admit, when I saw the incident happen live, I thought it looked bad. When I thought about why this was bad, I had to ask, was it because the assistant was female? If the answer to that question is yes, then this poses more questions than answers, imo.
Would the social media outcry have been the same had this been, say, Darren Cann? I doubt it, but that doesn't detract from Aguero doing something he should not have done.
I'd also argue that there was not any malice/intent to his actions, and I would finally argue that, had Sian have made the correct call in the first place, Aguero would not have reacted the way he did.

I'd also agree with LT. PL/PGMO would have far more pressing issues to deal with, like trying to appease their media darlings after the VAR shambles at Goodison.

".... and I would finally argue that, had Sian have made the correct call in the first place, Aguero would not have reacted the way he did."
Really...???:o :o

Maguire deserved both Cautions, the first was more orange as well.
It is an assumption that James deserved to be Red Carded.
Kyle Walker kicked the Dane, DFK anywhere else on the FoP, did it have to be more of a kick because it was in the penalty area?
