General Discussion / Re: Arsenal vs. Liverpool - J. Brooks
« on: Sun 07 Jan 2024 20:53 »
If Brooks can nail the dissent sanction then he will be much, much higher in the pecking order of officials.

Very impressive once again, and possibly on for referee of the season at the half time stage of the campaign.

I think at this stage it is neck and neck between Barrot and Brooks for referee of the season so far and if they both continue in their current form it will be the same at the of the season though I feel Brooks may have a cup final to show for it

Brooks so far with just over a hour gone continues to establish himself as one of the best refs so far this season , his stock is rising and he has been outstanding all season including today

I consider myself to be fair - I criticise referees when I feel they deserve and in equal measure I praise them , I have been critical of Pawson for performances as both ref and VAR  over the last few months and today he was superb , he contributed to the spectacle and he was determined to keep all the players on the pitch , as mentioned by a previous poster he looked relaxed is this due to no VAR ?

General Discussion / Re: A Taylor - Liverpool v Newcastle
« on: Wed 03 Jan 2024 18:00 »
Well I watched this match in the bbn pub with my mate , and for the second Liverpool penalty I said to him if VAR doesn’t overturn this decision I really do despair because for me that ticked all the boxes for a clear and obvious error it was a clear dive and Jota knew he had over run the ball so decided to dive I don’t know how Taylor and Attwell thought differently I agree about Beswick and Nunn had a excellent game

In a perfect world I would like to see VAR in the PL on the back burner until they get people in who can use it properly and would have had the proper training and understanding. I have said it before and I will say it again VAR is not fit for purpose because of the current people that use it also it shouldn’t be used where a decision is subjective rather factual or a clear and obvious error because VAR being used on subjective decisions means it’s a lottery and as such some referees would give it some wouldn’t so the fairest thing is just stay with the onfield decision

Isn't your last point exactly what happened last night? VAR stuck with on-field decision.

I don't think over-involvement in subjective decisions is really a big problem in PL. Data from judgement of 'Independent Panel' all season has suggested many more interventions have been missed by VAR rather than incorrectly made. I'm not sure what exact latest figures are but I think it was reported a few weeks ago panel thought only two incorrect interventions had been made by VAR whereas about 15 had been missed. I'm not sure putting it on backburner would especially help - it already seems too much that way!

You'd hope VARs would have had proper training by now considering it's been in place for several years in PL. I think it's fair to question whether other people could  do it better but obviously it's not a quick thing to find those people and build up their experience and the idea there's a group of people out there who could instantly radically improve VAR is probably a bit hopeful I think.

The other thing, to link the two points, is what the training actually says. It seems if replays show any contact then VAR involvement is often going to be unlikely. There's been lots of incidents this season, whether penalties or red cards, where a lot of people have felt referee made error and VAR should have intervened but panel have agreed with VAR's lack of intervention, so if that is the training/guidance being given then changing people who do VAR isn't necessarily going to change everything. It seems to me in general that  Clear and Obvious bar is too high rather than too low, perhaps both in guidance given and how VARs are implementing it.

Fair and valid points Reading ref

General Discussion / Craig Pawson. : Man Utd vs Aston Villa
« on: Wed 27 Dec 2023 07:54 »
I thought Pawson was ok , he seemed to be a bit more relaxed than usual and talked to players more , kudos to him for booking Fernandes for his dissent after he booted the ball at a Villa player who was stopping him taking a quick free kick - the player didn’t have time to move

He reacted exactly the way Dalot did that saw him sent off last week but was moving away from the referee which might have saved him

Still signs of Pawson being swayed by players reactions which is his weakest trait and needs improving

I say this in the nicest possible way , the injury that put Kavanagh out of action for a while was a blessing in disguise as he wasn’t at his best prior to it and I wouldn’t have put him in the top 5 though the season before he was doing great , and since his return his performances have been great his appointments reflect that and he’s probably putting in the  performances of his career so far and I’m pleased for him and his team

I disagree with the Newcastle penalty as imo there wasn’t enough contact to send him to the ground which what I thought referees took into account

Merry Christmas to every member /mods and all your families I hope each and everyone of you have a great one and a happy new year all the very best for 2024

Pawson really has fallen out of favour with the powers that be , I am struggling to recall the last big game he had

Overall a good spread of appointments over the festive period

General Discussion / Re: M OLIVER - Liverpool v Man U

I think fatherhood is affecting him aswell understandably as his slip in performances has occurred since the birth of his child hopefully won’t be long before he’s back to his top notch performances

I thought it was a easy gane for Oliver ,  as they are clamping down on dissent Oliver is 100% correct in law but here we go again with the consistency or lack of Nunez sarcastically applauds the AR after being cautioned and nothing is done

It’s hard to defend a referee applying the laws when there is no consistency vis a vis Nunez

43
Perfect example of on field referees being damned if they do and damned if they don’t , personally I like ( I may not agree with it though ) that refereees seem to produce a YC instead of a red card , it looks less embarrassing because VAR can recommend a OFR compared to producing a RC and VAR saying it should be a YC

Maybe referees produce the YC and say can you check please as I  think it’s a potential RC but I’m erring on the side of caution

General Discussion / Espen Eskas : Man Utd vs Bayern Munich
« on: Tue 12 Dec 2023 20:58 »
Half time at Old Trafford and Eskas looks right at home not had a lot to do but has stayed in the background and kept his cards in his pocket so far and dealt with flashpoints using man management whereas some referees tend to show a card to both players

45
Barrott and Robinson continue their run of games and without doubt both are highly thought of by the top brass , no surprise to see Oliver on the Liverpool vs Man Utd match not that I’m expecting it to be a contest with the way Utd are playing lately

No sign of Tony Harrington, I genuinely hope he hasnt had another setback on his way back from injury
