General Discussion / Re: Bournemouth v Luton
« on: Sat 16 Dec 2023 20:12 »
Well said Gayle. It is a horrible thing to witness at first hand. Having been at Fir Park the day Phil O’Donnell tragically passed away the thing that hit me was the absolute silence once the crowd saw something serious had happened. It’s an awful experience for everyone especially those closest to Tom.  I pray that he makes a speedy and full recovery

I hope he stays strong. 25 mins in and the theatrical face clutching by Fiorentina is embarrassing. I have counted at least 4 attempts to deceive the ref already.

Edited to add WHU fans disgracing themselves now. Don’t understand the logic there at all.

General Discussion / Re: Kevin Clancy
« on: Mon 10 Apr 2023 20:21 »
I despair of Old Firm fans sometimes. Really do. Absolutely disgusting that Mr Clancy has been subject to threats and his contact details revealed. Without refs we do not have a game or a sport and the idiots making these threats need to have a cold hard look at themselves.

General Discussion / Re: P TIERNEY: LFC V AFC

It looks to me that Andy Robertson grabs or at least touches Hatzidakis and the AR has moved his arm to bat him away, much like you would a fly or a wasp buzzing around you. I also think this could be an instinctive reaction from the AR to the unexpected contact from Robertson. Don't think for a minute he has intentionally made contact, but unfortunately it looks like he he does. The reaction from Robertson is in my opinion embarrassing. Hope this is dealt with sensibly and that Hatzidakis is simply out the limelight for a few weeks. I am sure he will learn from this.

Never heard of the 75 minute rule up here or anywhere for that matter. I suppose Bobby must have got it from somewhere buy only he can enlighten us where, assuming the report is correct.

General Discussion / Re: Celtic v Rangers - Nick Walsh

Agreed he was absolutely excellent
Not for the first time in this fixture. Huge promise for the future.

Not sure how many times this can be said, but he has moved to England due to work  If he was moving for personal reasons then perhaps he would have gone in at SG2 or even SG1, but you can't be in either of those levels and have a full time job whereas you can at L1.

For the incident with Tomlin I was well done to the referee.  He has tried to engineer a situation to get an opponent and it backfired, he only has himself to blame.

Although....

I would take anything Charlie Richmond says with a pinch of salt, he and another ref Steve Conroy both left the refereeing ranks up here after disputes with the SFA and tend to get wheeled out in the red top press with these "I know what is going on scoops" from time to time.

General Discussion / Bobby Crosses The Border
« on: Sat 18 Jun 2022 12:27 »
Scottish referee Bobby Madden will be plying his trade in League 1 and League 2 next season.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61844830

Interesting to see how he does, and how it compares refereeing the likes of Salford City and Port Vale to Old Firm clashes up here.

Edited to add: Was trying to think of last referee to cross the border. Remember Joe Timmons who was from Ayrshire moving south and refereeing in the lower leagues down south before returning home again. That would be mid to late 80's I think. Cannot think of any more recent than that

General Discussion / Re: Retirement

Bobby Madden has ended his FIFA/UEFA career

An excellent referee but wasn’t going to be elite, chance for Nick Walsh to progress

Not seen much of Nick Walsh but he was excellent in Hungary last season. Barely noticed him. He looks a great prospect though.

In my opinion Nick Walsh is by far the best we have in Scotland as things currently stand. Feel his foul detection and game management is top class. If we are to get another Elite FIFA ref to replace Willie it will be Nick Walsh I reckon

General Discussion / Craig Napier & Lloyd Wilson
« on: Thu 02 Jun 2022 11:30 »
Scottish category 1 refs Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson have revealed (as a gay man I hate the phrase “come out”) that they are gay. I applaud them both for having the courage to do so.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61671888

Maybe following Jake Daniels and our two Scottish referees today, this will encourage more people to be comfortable with being themselves.

Male football might just be moving in the right direction with regards to sexuality at long last.

Edited to add update to original story concerning Lloyd Wilson also revealing his sexuality.

Scottish Appointments / Re: Is this a debut?
« on: Fri 13 May 2022 16:24 »
Interesting, to me anyway, that Matthew MacDermid, from Motherwell got his Premier League debut at Motherwell v Hearts which is typically a feisty affair. Also unusual to get a debut in a top six fixture.
And, he did very well and looks a promising official. Happy to see him back anytime based on that display.

General Discussion / Re: Celtic vs. Rangers, John Beaton
« on: Mon 02 May 2022 12:45 »
Neither side can have any complaints about the refereeing team yesterday in my opinion, though as always is the way up here, some on both sides will microscopically analyse every decision and decide he has favoured the other. Welcome to Glasgow :)

Thanks for that explanation Affy Moose. I can understand now the subtle differences in the decision making. For the uninitiated onlooker they do look almost identical!!
