B.A. Voizey of Yeovil was on linea already involved in the UEFA Cup match 03-10-1973 RWD Molenbeek - Espanyol (referee David W. Smith).

After further thought I wonder if the earlier suggestions of D.A.J. Ling and Jim Whalley may be more likely. Ling was also in his last season as a FL linesman (I originally thought he'd served longer) so he would be a likely fit for "Lin". That would mean the other linesman would be a relatively new FL referee. While Voizey seems a more likely explanation of "Volley" Whalley is also a possibility and he was a relatively new FL ref. While Voizey making a second European appearance that season can't be ruled out - indeed it could have been a good move to use the same linesman again - it would seem unlikely given how the English appointments were done. Sometimes a referee profile would mention that he had done a specific European game but it's hard to test that for Jim Whalley as his League career ended soon afterwards.

19.09.1973   Fortuna Düsseldorf - Nĉstved IF   1:0
Ken Burns -  J.E. Bent and Alan Bradley (Accrington).
24.10.1973   OGC Nice - Fenerbahçe   4:0
Ken Burns - Robert (Bob) M. Perkin and Fredrik Brian Handy (Brownhills)
27.11.1973   Dinamo Kiev   - VfB Stuttgart   2:0
Ken Burns - Roy Swallow (Sheffield) and Alex R. Lees (Somerset)
06.03.1974   Ruch Chorzów - Feyenoord   1:1
Ken Burns - ? Lin and ? Volley (note data from the Polish press, the names are probably distorted).

"Volley" on 6.3.1974 is probably B.A. Voizey of Yeovil who was in his last season as a FL linesman. The first linesman would therefore almost certainly be a FL referee but no obvious candidate - maybe Ralph Lee of Cheadle simply because he had a 3 letter surname beginning with L.

Duncan Jackson was, I believe a man of Kent (or a Kentish man).

Indeed - he was from Maidstone and in his last season as was generally the case for the FL linesmen appointed to these games.

A bit odd if Clive Thomas was on the line to Edward Morgan at Alki Larnaca in 1979, given that Thomas was a FIFA ref and Morgan never made it on to the FL refs list. Should it not be the other way around? Keith Cooper was/is the father of Swansea's current head coach Steve Cooper.

I agree it seems strange. Given Clive Thomas's seniority he wouldn't have been a likely choice as referee for this kind of game but it wouldn't have been surprising for it to go to one of the other Welsh officials who was a Football League referee. The listing may be correct though and they may have felt that it would be useful to have someone of Clive's experience to assist an official who wasn't a Football League referee, perhaps not unlike the way a very experienced referee may be used as fourth official to a new ref these days.

I don't know about Smith, I was thinking of
A W S Jones ( Ormskirk ). First rate referee

By bad on A W S - I should have known better.

The referee I am thinking of was Mr Smith, from the West Midlands, football league referee whilst holding the post of General Secretary of the Referees' Association c1990s.   I thought he was a three initial chap, but could be (again) mistaken.

Any takers?

Arthur Smith's full initials were indeed A.W.S. but he was almost always billed as "A.W." as indeed was almost always the case for the other Football League referees with three first names / initials. This happened also with the only FL ref (as far as I know) with 4 first names / initials - Tom Bune who was usually billed as "T.G. Bune" and not "T.G.O.P. Bune".

After refereeing a Leicester-Liverpool FA Cup tie in 1965 Arthur Luty said he couldn't do the replay because "I don't do midweek games". I wasn't sure at the time whether that was his choice or because of job commitments but earlier posts suggest the latter. Certainly not doing midweek games would have made an international career just about impossible and made some major domestic appointments very difficult as well. Sometimes we wonder why certain highly-respected referees didn't gain international status or more generally missed out on some domestic honours and it may have been linked to job or family commitments; in some cases some talented officials may not even have been able to reach Football League level because these commitments limited their appointments or meant they had to give up refereeing.

From the picture of the officials in the link below does anyone know which one is Mr Counsell?

https://povijest.gnkdinamo.hr/pri%C4%8De-iz-povijesti/kup-velesajamskih-gradova-1963.html

David Counsell had a receding hairline so he is very probably the linesman on the right of the picture.

Bernard Wickham was a Football League linesman from 1954 to 1970, one of the longest careers on the line and particularly remarkable in an era when careers were much shorter and linesmen had to retire by their early / mid 40s. There is a report suggesting that he refereed the Arsenal-Sheffield Wednesday game on 11th January 1969 but it may be mistaken. The appointed referee was Eric Jennings. There are three possibilities - the report is correct and he took charge of the whole game after Eric Jennings was unable to attend; the referee was injured during the match, he took over and was credited as doing the whole game; or the reporter misread the programme or teamsheet and didn't realise the referee was Eric Jennings. I think the last possibility is the most likely one as indeed it is in most cases where a linesman is credited with taking charge of a whole game rather than the appointed referee. Cases where a linesman definitely took charge of a whole Football League game after the referee withdrew at very late notice seem to be very rare although it's possible some instances aren't reported.

Some games where Ian Walton was linesman - there will be others, these are just ones I know. Date is year-month-day, e.g. 19680925 = 25 September 1968:

19680925   Tottenham Hotspur   Exeter City   6-2
19681116   West Ham United   Leicester City   4-0
19681228   Watford   Brighton & HA   1-0
19690104   Watford   Port Vale   2-0
19690118   Charlton Athletic   Derby County   2-0
19690319   Crystal Palace   Millwall   4-2.
19690825   West Ham United   Arsenal   1-1.
19690903   Crystal Palace   Cardiff City   3-1

19710306   Brentford   Southend United   4-2
19710407   Tottenham Hotspur   Derby County   2-1
19710428   Brighton & HA   Plymouth Argyle   1-1.
19710911   Crystal Palace   Manchester United   1-3.
19710927   Brentford   Stockport County   2-0
19720101   Fulham   Swindon Town   2-4
19720212   Charlton Athletic   Cardiff City   2-2.
19720417   Brentford   Doncaster Rovers   2-1.
19720819   Fulham   Burnley   1-1
19720829   Arsenal   West Ham United   1-0
19721003   Millwall   Chesterfield   2-0
19721104   West Ham United   Wolves   2-2
19721118   Southend United   Aldershot   0-2
19721216   Crystal Palace   Manchester United   5-0
19721230   Brentford   Oldham Athletic   1-1
19730106   Fulham   Middlesbrough   2-1.
19730120   Millwall   Blackpool   1-1
19730310   Ipswich Town   Arsenal   1-2
19730414   West Ham United   Leeds United   1-1
19730430   Tottenham Hotspur   Wolves   2-2

The early matches at Watford just a week apart is not a mistake - the second game v Port Vale was an FA Cup tie and the FA rather than the Football League did the appointments meaning refs could appear at the same club in quick succession. The last game was just after the end of the normal season and probably therefore his last match; it was definitely the last game for referee John Thacker (Lincoln).

The crash occurred some time earlier (March 16th 1965) on the way to a Carlisle-Reading game. He was travelling with his father and match referee Colin Cooke when their vehicle spun off the road into a river. Ken Hiley and his father sadly drowned while Colin Cooke was injured.

Ian Walton was a Football League linesman until 1973. A couple of brief profiles of him from 1969 attached...

It is Alan Robinson. The badge is of the Association of Football League Referees and Linesmen. The picture seems to be from the Orient-Partick game in November 1976.
