General Discussion / Re: Kovacs - Barcelona v PSG

I do find the commentary hilarious. A manager starts kicking around advertising hoardings, so the ref gives him a red card. And apparently it’s the referee who has struggled to stay calm 🤣

Interesting and very difficult DOGSO call which is a potential game changer.

Of course because Saka is English he isn’t called out for blatant simulation. Neuer stopped, he’s allowed to hold his ground, he isn’t obliged to move out of the way and Saka initiated the contact in an attempt to deceive the referee.

I think he has quite evidently been called out for it.

Great work at the end in not falling for that abysmal attempt at diving by Saka.

Pulled it back well in the end. Very few yellows which is good for a derby with a lot at stake.

One of the clearest DOGSO’s you will see given as a yellow card against the Ipswich defender. Very poor decision. Debatable whether it was a foul but once it was then it had to be a red card.

He must be sat thinking that involvement in a game like that fully justifies moving across the world to ref. What a finish.

Staggered Antony wasn’t at least booked in the first half for his foul mouth rant at the linesman.

10/10 first half in difficult conditions, with players acting like children, and the fans just as bad.

I’m not sure there was enough to warrant DOGSO for the red card with a covering defender. Seems to have upset both sides with inconsistent decision making and Morsy was lucky not to receive a second YC.

When was the last time a referee went to the monitor and didn’t overturn the decision? I feel like the bar is too high for that. The VAR could send the referee over, with guidance rather than influence. “You may want to take another look to see if a different angle helps you to confirm your decision”, rather than adding a lot of pressure in having to go with the VAR.

How can it be a penalty and a DOGSO with double jeopardy? God knows what Choudhury was doing for the first one but I’m not convinced at all with the second one.

It’s mainly nit picking really. He’s just overseen one of the best FA cup games in recent years between two massive rivals, with a bunch of very difficult to manage players, and made it look easy.

General Discussion / Re: Sunny Singh Gill

"Mike Dean seemed unimpressed by Gill apparently signing autographs at half-time"

As Dean was such a shy, retiring wall flower who never courtes the limelight?!?!

I think it was very unwise of Sunny to be signing autographs at any time during the game, and I hope someone has a word with him about it p.d.q.

I’d like to know why not? He had a minute or two waiting for the players, and those children were interacting with him. Those two children may in future choose to be referee’s as a result of that interaction. Or simply it may have improved their day. Referee’s aren’t robots and humanising them is incredibly important.

With regards to the penalty claim, in the stadium I thought it looked like a cast iron penalty. Having seen a replay, I woukd now categorise it as a dive. Ballard is heading into the box, his touch is too heavy and knows he won’t get to the ball, his legs buckle in a weird fashion before any touch from the Leicester defender and he hits the deck. For me, never a penalty and if it was given against my team I would be furious!

Generally thought he was one of the better refs we’ve had the pleasure of this season. Quite laid back in style. Time keeping definitely not a strong point - only 4 added second half despite many subs and a caution for time wasting - think it’s safe to say the directive has stopped!

I’m glad you’ve said this. As a Leicester fan (so biased), while he does grab him, the theatrics from Ballard for me make it a dive. I’m not seeing the same ‘cast iron’ penalty that others are.

Aside from that, his refereeing style seemed to contribute to sucking all of the energy out of the game, which didn’t really help my team get any rhythm once we scored (though that’s our own problem to figure out).

Hopefully he’ll learn and fix these issues in time.
