General Discussion / Re: Jon Moss Leaves PGMOL
« on: Sat 23 Mar 2024 08:33 »
I wonder if there's any chance of a current referee retiring to take on the role? I'm not sure there's any likely contenders, given SG1 has a relatively low average age now compared to a few years ago, but perhaps worth us considering.

Of the current SG1 Group, I imagine Anthony Taylor and perhaps Craig Pawson might be possible candidates along with Graham Scott.

Scott has a previous career in communications and media I belive so this could be something that would suit him well. Would be a shame to lose him from the group and this could be the way to keep him in.

I'm sure plenty will want it. Friend has to be another name considering he works with SG2 at the minute.

I heard it said on more than one occasion that Kevin Friend has a remarkably good ability to get on with people and his relational skills are of the highest order. That would seem to be a major plus point for the appointment.

That's because he's friend to everyone...

In Scotland all referees are category 1 and the fee you get paid slides depending on division, so I think from a hierarchy, the new guys in League 2 are on a par with Collum and Walsh etc.  Though having had Collum yesterday, they're probably better.

From the BBC match report:
“John McGinn was dismissed for a reckless [/b] tackle”
Aarrgh, one of my pet hates!!!

Very clear red card and a very solid display from the referee.

Tackle is generous!  To me it was a kick.  Love John McGinn to bits (and his even better big brother) but he plays on the edge and he let himself and his club down today.

General Discussion / Re: M Oliver - Liverpool Man City

I thought Doku was high enough that it becomes reckless but I think this is a flaw in VAR as I suspect Oliver never saw it, and I don't think there was enough there for VAR to change whatever decision he made - so my suspicion is it ended up not ever being properly decided on as play on which happened by default wasn't an obvious mistake.

So while I agree, if he'd just dinghied some kids that would have sent the wrong message too.  Through o fault of his, he's been a story this week.  He was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea when asked.

Easiest penalty decision you'll ever see there.

General Discussion / Re: R JONES - Arsenal v Brentford
« on: Sat 09 Mar 2024 22:47 »
When I watch Jones I always think he's so keen to try and let it run (which is to be commended) that he sometimes misses blatant fouls and that in turns leads to a slight loss of control.  I think Havertz was lucky, though I accept Jones had players in the road and I suspect the assistant didn't have a clear view of the ball either to be certain if it was a tumble and dive or a bump and play on.

General Discussion / Re: Chris kavanagh -Carabao cup final

I really don’t think it has been that bad. But then it depends on your search for perfection at all times. I guess.

I’m also going be controversial with the Liverpool disallowed goal. I actually think it’s a good spot. If you’ve got half an ounce of tactical awareness on a football pitch, then you can see the Chelsea player who is blocked by a Liverpool player in an offside position would have been the better side of Virgil and would have almost certainly won the header, not leaving the space for the goal to be scored.

There will be arguments that say this happens all the time in these situations, and, it does happen a lot however, this has a clear material impact on the situation in my opinion.

I agree, however there are tonnes I've seen this season that I've thought similar and goals have been given.  I was astonished that was disallowed based on what I've seen elsewhere.  Was still walking back from Fir Park at the start but since I came in Kavanagh has been fine.
Care to give some examples of the tonnes of goals you’ve seen this season?

Without thinking about it there was one in St Mirren v Dundee and there was one in Atletico Madrid v Feyenoord where someone got much more advantage from being offside than that.

General Discussion / Dundee v St Johnstone - David Munro
« on: Mon 12 Feb 2024 16:53 »
One of the worst bits of officiating I've ever seen yesterday.  Very late in the game and there is an incident where a St Johnstone player's head thumps into a Dundee player's head.  The Dundee player I believe was knocked unconscious - there are issues but the lack of card but moreso, the player was left unconscious while Munro was playing an advantage.  Thankfully the Dundee doctor used his initiative and came on to treat the player who has now been discharged from hospital.

Anderlecht are appealing the decision to replay so I think it might rumble on a bit.  But if this is the start of the end of this utterly failed experiment then great news.

In Scotland it is being overused and is now re-refereeing - just this week we've seen two in St Johnstone v Aberdeen, one in Hearts v Aberdeen and one in Kilmarnock v Hibs where they've overreached.  The delays and the error ratio are too much a price for the generally small uptick in accuracy.  And the other thing is in a small league, we're now really diluting the quality of onfield referees because some are needed to watch the screens.  Most reasonable people accept mistakes from the onfield pitch much more readily than someone watching a screen.

Not seen any of the game, but unless referees have a total disaster in game 1, game 2 needs to follow soon after to allow them to build their confidence at a new level.  If he doesn't get 3-4 games between now and May, this has been a waste of his time.

I say this in the nicest possible way , the injury that put Kavanagh out of action for a while was a blessing in disguise as he wasn’t at his best prior to it and I wouldn’t have put him in the top 5 though the season before he was doing great , and since his return his performances have been great his appointments reflect that and he’s probably putting in the  performances of his career so far and I’m pleased for him and his team

I disagree with the Newcastle penalty as imo there wasn’t enough contact to send him to the ground which what I thought referees took into account

Could be the injury was hampering him.

I thought it was a penalty, however I think Isak thought he wasn't getting it and threw himself down to make the point, or make sure it was checked - I know you can't but I'd love a ref to give the penalty and book the player for taking the p***.  Thought Forest were excellent as an aside.

General Discussion / Re: Paul Tierney Burnley v Liverpool
« on: Tue 26 Dec 2023 23:31 »
I think it was a foul that caused Salah to be there, if what Tierney saw was what I saw when the VAR border was on the screen, he was never shown the push.

Whether you can say penalty, then play the advantage and give the goal that is more technical than I can follow, but for Burnley to get a free kick is just not correct.

No blame at all on Tierney, unless he should have asked for a side on of the build up to the offside but why would he if he's oblivious to the push.

General Discussion / Re: Sam Barrott- Ipswich v Leicester
« on: Tue 26 Dec 2023 23:26 »
Can understand him missing the potential penalty, I think it was one but you could argue it was shoulder to shoulder and the ball was in proximity, but you'd be stretching.  But the other Ipswich defender blocked his view and you can't give what you can't see - that was unlucky.

However, even as someone who always leans to Ipswich in English football, he bottled the second yellow for Harness.  No excuse, was a clear yellow.  And immediately after he gave another foul against him for a dragback - it was barely a foul but if he interpreted it as a drag with no attempt to play the ball after giving him the benefit seconds before, that was the chance to correct the wrong and nobody would have argued much if he gave it for the accumulation.

Those incidents were a pity, i was just chatting with a friend online at half time and was saying how much better he'd been than the top flight refs from England and Scotland I'd seen today but dipped a bit in the 2nd half.
