General Discussion / Re: Kovacs - Barcelona v PSG

These 2 must be the worst commentary team I’ve ever heard. Can’t help themselves but say ‘he’s not in control’ or similar after every decision!

I don’t think he’s got a single thing wrong. The DOGSO was a brilliant call and the 2 reds for the coaches mandatory.

Leeds fans weren’t moaning when Bamford scored with his arm! So far as I’m concerned it’s evened itself out!
Yeah, because that evens out the 6 letters Leeds have already had from the PGMOL apologising for penalties not given and opposition red cards not given. 🙄 Regardless of the fact there were two, not just one handball/ penalty decisions missed on Tues night.

Which games do the 6 letters refer to if you don’t mind me asking? I can think of a couple of times Leeds have been hard done by this season but struggling to think of 6. Certainly not 6 that would warrant a letter of apology.

I assume the Sunderland doesn’t account for one of these 6 yet (maybe making it 7 in total)! And I’ll also assume they didn’t get a letter of apology in relation to the Bamford handball mentioned above!

Unfortunate for Leeds because both shouts should have been penalties. I think the one in the first half is easier to spot for Tim as his positioning is excellent, but even the Leeds players didn’t really appeal.

The one in the second half could have been a penalty for the shirt pull or the hand ball, I accept Tim may not have spotted the handball but he should have seen the shirt pull. AR had a better view but further away so very difficult.

I must admit, I didn’t watch the whole game so not really in a position to comment on the added time, but 3 minutes is very rare these days, even with the initiative clearly gone. 5 subs and 5 yellows should really at least amount to 5 minutes, when you take into account other inevitable stoppages.

Under the LOTG he could have awarded a penalty for the Gabriel ‘handball’ - but be realistic, out of everyone on this forum, not a single one of you is awarding a penalty for that in a match you are refereeing. The game does not expect a penalty there.

Excellent call on the Saka penalty appeal. Neuer clearly stops way before any contact, which is then initiated by Saka and is highly avoidable.
Don’t necessarily disagree, but isn’t the point of refereeing to enforce the laws of the game? Match perception and management aside. You don’t have to agree with the decision, you’ve just got to make it.

I see where you’re coming from, but clearly there has to be a level of common sense applied when enforcing the LOTG in order to maintain credibility and match control.

How many indirect free kicks have you seen awarded for the goalkeeper holding onto the ball for more than 6 seconds?

Whilst like I said, awarding a penalty here is defendable under the LOTG, the referee will lose match control and authority. The sensible decision here is to accept play has only started once Gabriel kicks the ball. The argument in this case won’t be that the referee has incorrectly applied law, it will simply be that the game did not restart with Raya, it restarted with Gabriel. Had he not blown his whistle prior to Raya kicking the ball, we wouldn’t be having this debate, that for me is his error.

Looked like an obvious case of SFP by Casemiro at the end, VAR didn’t seem to check for very long. Ticks all the criteria for a red card.

General Discussion / Re: Newcastle v West Ham - Rob Jones
« on: Sun 31 Mar 2024 11:29 »
I totally and absolutely agree with Ref95. There is a total lack of understanding here. Phillips started his kick when he was in a realistic position to kick the ball and from then on committed to doing so. Phillips was entitled to do what he did at the commencement of his swing of the boot without fouling Gordon and when later contact was made Phillips was beyond the point of no return. IMHO a lack of any feel or empathy for what was going on. Whatever happened to that high bar for VAR intervention?
No wonder Phillips felt aggrieved.

But it doesn't matter! Just because he didn't see him coming doesn't mean it isn't a foul. He ploughs through the back of him, he was too slow and AG got there first. Its a penalty every day of the week.

But the key point here is that he didn’t get there first, he never gets to the ball, and has no realistic possibility of getting the ball if the contact doesn’t occur. The only player ever in possession of the ball is Phillips.

I fully support that it’s a clear penalty if Gordon gets a touch on the ball before Phillips kicks through the back of him, but this was not the case in this scenario.

The second penalty is one of my biggest pet hates in the game at the minute, seems to have only crept in over the last decade.

Gordon doesn’t have possession of the ball, has no real intention to win the ball and has no possibility of getting a touch on the ball. His only intention is to put a part of his body in front of Phillips who is midway through a kick.

It cannot be a foul for me, all he does is impede the player who is in possession of the ball, hence the only decision if there is one to be made is a free kick to West Ham. If Gordon touches the ball away from Phillips and then gets taken out, it’s a foul to Newcastle, but he doesn’t.

I’ve seen some very poor referees in recent weeks watching Leicester, but I thought Mr Kitchen was excellent yesterday. Let things go in equal measure for both teams, all cards correct.

The only thing I can think of that he may have called incorrectly, from where I was sitting (at the opposite end of the ground), I thought Faes should have seen red for a shirt pull DOGSO - couldn’t tell you whether it was inside or outside the area though due to the view I had and haven’t seen it back.

Brilliant from Brooks who surely cements his place as the 3rd best in the English game now.

My only gripe would be Bruno not being shown a SYC, not necessarily for that foul on Macallister (although he easily could have gone for this) but for the simulation on the edge of the Liverpool box shortly afterwards. But as mentioned previously, simulations is generally ignored by all referees these days. And of course there’s the fact Bruno is allowed to get away with pretty much whatever he likes in order to avoid him being sent off.

Around that time there were 3 "non-fouls" where the crowd shouted for the opposite action but we didn't see replays on any of these as to whether they should have been fouls.

As for simulation the same could be said of Mac Allister who was rolling around "injured" after he had kicked Maguire in the stomach - presumably since he was worried that he could receive a SYC. Mac Allister could also have received a YC before the one he did get.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make with the first paragraph? The crowd thinking it was a foul certainly doesn’t mean it was a foul.

I’m glad you agree that Bruno should have seen a SYC. Personally I don’t think the Mac Allister incident was an act of simulation but you may disagree. I can’t think of the incident you’re referring to where he should have been cautioned prior to his yellow card, can you remember the minute or who the foul was against so I can try and have a look?

I think there has to be consideration for who would take over from Taylor and Oliver as England’s representatives at major tournaments. Taylor probably goes to the Euros and then calls it a day, Oliver probably calls it a day after the next Euros (maybe the 2030 World Cup at a push).

For me at the minute Brooks and Barrott are the most likely to take over at the top, so they need to be prioritised. I’m sure Kavanagh in the shorter term will be an option when Taylor calls time.

Obviously there are others coming through from the EFL who will be an option too depending on how they kick on - Smith (Lewis or Josh variety), Gill and Bramall (who has obviously been in SG1 for a little while already).

Average from Madley, not bad but got the 2 big calls wrong, the penalty and the red card - VAR intervened correctly for the DOGSO.

Much better, there was a 5 minute spell in the second half where he seemed to let everything go, including a clear foul and yellow card for a high boot to O’Hare’s nose! But otherwise very good.

Correct decision by VAR not to rule out the opening goal, no clear evidence to overturn although it took way longer than necessary.

Good to see Bond back. Very risky appointment at Luton for such a crucial game,  England has had a poor season, I expected Oliver or Taylor on that.
