Not happy with Anthony Taylor on our game first city at the Etihad, yes I have seen people on here post about the teams the referees support being declared but he is still from Manchester and the game is in Manchester and it could have major implications for the title fight so I feel that a referee from Manchester should not be referring the game

As has been said he has absolutely zero connection to Manchester City Football Club. He's a very experienced international referee who's integrity cannot be questioned, despite some very poor performances which unfortunately have favoured Man City in the past. However, Gillett on VAR is a Liverpool fan, that is a legitimate question to ask as to why he has this game.

Possibly, but there's still nearly 2 months left of the season and I think in many ways you just need to trust the officials to get on with it. I'm not even sure what result would be best for Liverpool!

I don't think that Gillett/Bankes/Jones/Salsbury officiate Liverpool games? I'm not 100% sure on the reasons why in all cases. You also have the likes of Taylor who's not been VAR on a PL game for a few years and England who I don't think has been VAR on a PL game since Spurs V Liverpool.

And if you're saying they can't be VAR you'd presumably also think they shouldn't be able to referee Man City or Arsenal either? What point do you apply that from? There's some refs who are less experienced or not really in favour - I wouldn't especially expect Scott, Bramall or Bond to referee Man City, Arsenal or Liverpool at this stage of the season for instance. SO before you know it you've ruled out a significant proportion of SG1 refs from officiating three games most weeks for the last 10 matches of the season, which inevitably just leads to some officials needing to do those games more often which people also don't like.

I believe AT has done VAR duties this calendar year

Irrespective of this though. Despite there being no overt questions, it is hugely disrespectful when supporters of any side cast aspersions on the integrity of any official.
Whether we rate them highly or not they have worked very hard, made significant sacrifices and proved their quality and ability.

Taylor has been VAR on FA Cup but I don't think PL? The same is true for England.

How many referee trios do we expect to be selected for the Euros? Would we expect two referee teams from Netherlands, France and England? Anywhere else?

Decent spread of appointments - even Scott has a PL middle! Nice to see England with 2 games including Man City V Villa and good game for Gillett with Chelsea V man Utd.

I'm a bit surprised at Harrington being VAR for Nottingham Forest V Palace considering what we heard of West Ham V Aston Villa incident.

As we approach Easter I was reminded of some of the discussions around Christmas time over whether Gillett should referee Spurs as a Liverpool fan or Oliver should referee Arsenal as a Newcastle fan - quite amusing to see how much of a gap there is between those teams now!

When did Josh Smith last referee a PL game? It seems to have bene a while.

Why has Salsbury been announced but not the other  SG1 referees?

AT, do you think Linington will be coming off SG2 at end of season? I've not really been following.

I wonder if there's any chance of a current referee retiring to take on the role? I'm not sure there's any likely contenders, given SG1 has a relatively low average age now compared to a few years ago, but perhaps worth us considering.

A rather abrupt departure. I wonder who will take on the role long-term?

Once again thought Gillett handled himself very well, reinforcing my high personal opinion of his ability as a ref.

Please correct me if wrong, but it seems like the VAR/AVAR are refereeing the Villa v Spurs match for Chris Kavanagh and instructing him what to do?

Wasn't it other members of the on-field team who were assisting Kavanagh with the red card decision? Not 100% sure on that though.

Harrington seemed a bit all over the place on the West Ham V Villa review. As a referee, I think you'd want clear and succinct communication from the VAR. I don't think Gillett got that at all, although he did communicate well himself. I'm not sure why the VAR team were concerned about checking the APP once the on-field review had been started. They'd taken 5 minutes just to get to that stage - let Gillett judge the handball and then go from there!

Do we get the full conversations between referee and VAR? There didn't seem to be much interaction between Oliver and Attwell in the Liverpool V Man City game.

Dale Johnson has tweeted that the PL Panel voted 3-2 that Oliver was correct not to give a penalty in Liverpool V Man City match and it was a 4-1 vote that VAR was correct not to intervene. Panel did all think Havertz should have been sent off for second yellow card in Arsenal V Brentford for simulation, but not one for VAR. And they also voted 5-0 that there should have been a red card for Brighton V Nottingham Forest - I was disappointed this clip wasn't included tonight seeing as even Dermot Gallagher agreed it should have been a red card and officials had got it wrong.

Johnson suggests he thinks VAR Harrington focussed on wrong parts initially. He looked at factual elements to try and avoid need for on-field review but he thinks going down subjective route and recommending OFR quicker for deliberate handball or foul would have been more efficient than looking at possible offside or accidental handball by scorer in this case.

I'm not sure I can agree with this. Surely questions of offside need to be determined first before moving on to the nitty-gritty of possible handballs etc. A bit like reviews of decisions in cricket where possible no-balls are looked at before questions of lbw etc. Having seen the TV highlights, I'm not particularly surprised that it took so long to sort this one out, given the number of issues involved, but it seems the right decision was reached in the end.

If there's an obvious offence and a potential marginal offside offence then why do you need to look at the offside first? E.g. if there'd been a question of offside against Thierry Henry in the infamous France V Republic of Ireland World Cup play-off then why spend 3 minutes trying to work out if Henry was offside or not when you know the most obvious offence is the handball? It surely makes sense to start with the handball in that sort of situation.

It looks like the next edition is tonight (Tues 19th) at 7pm on TNT and Sky Sports.

What recent clips would you like to be discussed? Some that spring to mind include:

- Liverpool V Man City penalty appeal
- Brighton V Nottingham Forest non red card
- West Ham V Aston Villa disallowed goal
- Burnley V Brentford penalty and red card
- Everton V West Ham penalty for handball.

Dale Johnson says Bowen was the goal scorer so accidental handball part didn't apply - hence on-field review was needed to determine that it was a deliberate handball.

General Discussion / Re: D BOND - Burnley v Brentford

Don't think VAR failed, it was just that they had to check the offside first, but weird that they sent him to the monitor before doing so. 100% a penalty and DOGSO for Reguilon, clear push in the back with no attempt to play the ball right at the moment Vitinho was about to shoot. I'm surprised he didn't call it directly or at least with the help of his assistant in case he was obstructed

Webb said after Crystal Palace V Liverpool incident that if VAR thought there was e.g. a penalty then he generally wanted them to intervene and start the on-field review process even if there was still something to check in the APP. This was to try and make the process quicker. We saw this in the clip released a few weeks later from the Brighton V Spurs game where Bankes recommended Gillett view the monitor for a potential penalty whilst still checking an offside and Webb said he was happy the learning point had been taken on board.

It does seem surprising the game was delayed by half an hour, just because firstly you'd think it would be noticed earlier and secondly you wouldn't necessarily think it would take an hour (if I'm understanding correctly) to find a solution.
