General Discussion / Re: Mike Dean VAR Comments

Comms is taking over every enterprise and profession nowadays.  'The Thick Of It' is the best comment on these particular dark arts.

Absolutely, it is no longer just in politics but also now prevalent in business.  I have absolutely no doubt that the FA and PGMOL will have such comms specialists.

The PGMOL are currently recruiting a Communications Officer to work alongside its existing Head of Communications.

International Appointments / Re: 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Mijensa Rensch must feel awful expecting her name to be called out as one of the assistant referees upon hearing Penso’s name; for it then to be called out as the reserve assistant referee…

Tim Robinson and Darren Bond have been promoted to Select Group 1.

Congratulations to both of them. Both are very good Referees in my opinion. I just hope they're allocated a fairer share of PL appointments than those granted to Thomas Brammall who seems to have been used somewhat sparingly by PGMOL since his promotion to SG1. Hoping he has more games next season too.

I think this is the PGMOL’s strategy.

They did similar to Simon Hooper when he was initially promoted.

A very good Premier League referee down the years, who in many ways seemed to get better as he aged.

It still feels relatively recently that he was one of the newly promoted SG refs who was struggling a bit to get PL appointments. It certainly makes me feel old!

I'm sad he didn't quite get to 400 PL games but 390ish is still a very good effort.

Is there any word on if he'll have a role with the PGMOL going forwards, whether as a VAR or coach etc?

There are certainly vacancies at the moment.

Apparently an email went out last week that there will be no promotions from the SG2 AR list to the SG1 AR list.

General Discussion / Lee Mason Leaves PGMOL
« on: Fri 17 Feb 2023 19:47 »
PGMOL can confirm that Video Assistant Referee Lee Mason has departed the organisation by mutual consent.

Lee was a Premier League referee for 15 years and oversaw 287 top flight matches during that time, with his last coming during the closing stages of the 2021/22 season. His full career in the professional game saw the 51-year-old officiate in over 500 fixtures after he progressed to the Football League in 1998.

We would like to thank Lee for his dedicated service to the professional game and wish him all the best for the future.

Does anyone have any further details of the Elite Referee Development Plan?

The powers that be keep mentioning it but there seems to be nothing concrete in terms of what has been publicised.

I am pretty certain that the ERDP has started because Riley was recently interviewed at a game, of which he was watching a 2B referee who was a part of the plan.

No surprise there is royalty at Ashton Gate. Perhaps Attwell is heading to Norwich to get his usual parking space?

Rob Jones.

I believe Smith failed fitness test therefore didn’t get an interview Only two went forward for interview.

“Reliable source” or rumour mill?

Sadly true. Unbeknown to Josh he was beginning a bout of covid having tested positive the next day and subsequently coming off the League One play off final

I know he will be determined to be back in the shop window next year

Shame. It shows how fragile the system can be and how all of the hard work across a season can be undone in the blink of an eye.

It seems a tad harsh that there has been no reconsideration if Smith was hit with Covid.

Also - is it commonplace for referees within the Select Group (1 or 2) to complete a fitness test before being promoted?

I am sure that at every other level, referees undertake a fitness test after being informed of their promotion - i.e. Level 3 referees were told in May and have June, July, etc. to complete the test.

I see there is a some chat of assistant referees - in particular Dan Robathan.

This is a really good podcast about Robathan’s journey in refereeing and, crucially, the sacrifices he made during the emergence of Select Group 2:
