Best of luck to all the officials on the final day, hoping for a mostly incident-free weekend. Depending on the games this midweek, could be a monster “winner stays up” game for Robert Massey-Ellis

Perhaps worthy of being added to the list above !

Well JCFC's favourite competition, the FA Vase, now has its two finalists and surprisingly (and uniquely) it is an Essex Senior League double.

A shame both matches were settled on penalties with both finishing level after 90 mins of the second leg. Why on earth do they not give them a period of extra time in an attempt to resolve the tie by normal means. That applies equally to early rounds. One of the defeated semi-finalists only progressed to that stage by winning three consecutive penalty shoot-outs, so an apt way for them to bow out.

I recall, (a long way) back in the day attending a replay at a neutral ground (Cambridge City) when the two legs ended square and Billericay progressed to their third final in not many years and they won them all. None of this penalty nonsense then. I wonder (but not enough to count them) how many teams exited from this year's competition unbeaten.

Another example of where VAR is needed... so many of these issues in the Championship lately. Shame we will never have the facility to expand VAR down.

Same referee at QPR v West Brom when Kipre, the West Brom centre half made an excellent goal-line save and a corner rather than a penalty and red card was given. I expect the Baggies are looking forward to having Mr Eltringham again some time soon !

I've seen him at Portman Road four times and probably a similar number at Southend and concur with previous comments. Unexceptional one way or the other. I recall tattoos, which wouldn't please some in our midst.

Interesting afternoon for our referee for Tuesday, Ben Atkinson, at Wimbledon yesterday. 10 yellows and sent off 2 players in injury time for dissent. Fair to say Karl Robinson wasn’t best pleased (shock!)

One of which came after he ignored or failed to notice a defender leave his defensive position way before the kick was taken to hack the ball clear whilst they were executing a short free-kick.

Also can't comment on today's performance, but he has refereed four Southend matches all of which have been reasonable or better. There're plenty worse.

FA Vase Semi-Final First Leg
Romford   2   v   2   Lincoln United
Alan Dale (Ipswich); Richard Wharton (Hatfield, Herts), Ciaran Fidler(Brighton). 4thers: Harry Wager(Tunbridge Wells).

att. 561

Nothing to add to JCFC's usual excellent account, other than a few details as above and to point out that the second "controversial" Romford goal was correctly awarded with the static defender in the right back position (no 12, I believe), with his arm raised in appeal, actually just keeping the attacker onside. Good call from Mr Wharton.

I too thought Alan Dale had a very decent game, a feat which I am led to believe he repeated two days later at Roots Hall.

I am not sure the words "usual excellent" are deserved, but thanks all the same.

I would point out that the goal mentioned was Lincoln United's second, though one contributor to Non League Matters also suggested that the late equaliser for Romford may have involved a handball. As usual, I was at the wrong end to see anything amiss.

I am sure they are !

I was describing Lincoln's second goal. Romford appeared in the description in error. Now corrected, thanks for pointing out.

Four home games in 6 days for Truro.

Closer inspection of the fixtures shows that this Thursday sees them start a run of 8 HOME matches in 15 days.

This wouldn't be quite so bad if each home match didn't involve a 400 mile round trip to Gloucester where they play their home fixtures.

Donohue with the massive Anglian derby, which no one here fore sought!

Scott with a big relegation clash down the road at Shepherd’s Bush Market, and I can hear the groans from Plymouth fans already.

It was not foreseen, even less fore sought !

General Discussion / Re: Paul Marsden...again

Mr Marsden was inexplicably appointed to a fixture between 2 teams, geographically quite adjacent, (Altrincham v Oldham) today.

I am still trying to process, with the assistance of TNT coverage, some of what I witnessed today.

Hopefully I will be in a position soon to share certain of his eccentricities

What is inexplicable about appointing him for a game between a couple of clubs 25-ish miles apart?

The inexplicable thing is why he is appointed at all. He has been beyond poor when I've seen him.

General Discussion / Re: M SALISBURY - Ipswich v Soton

Some game to be at as a neutral! Thoroughly enjoyed that.

Mostly good from Michael Salisbury, a little inconsistent I thought and a few I disagreed with from the stands but would need to see again to confirm. Initial instinct was yellow for Bree but on replay, I think a good call for red but could make a case for either.

Agree with Tweed on the Morsy booking, that set a poor precedent that Michael didn’t follow through on, so props for not making it a yellow-fest but not the best decision to start with.

Some game to be at as an Ipswich supporter too. Great entertainment as it has been so often at Portman Road this season (and last).

Very disappointed with Salisbury, especially his first half performance when his awarding of fouls was inconsistent verging on arbitrary. Similarly his sanctions were also inconsistent. Morsy is regularly cautioned for things that other players seem to get away with and throughout the first half he seemed to find it very much too easy to award Southampton free-kicks.

Second half was better for him and for Ipswich but overall it was hard to imagine we were watching a referee who has spent the majority of his matches this season in the Premier League.
