I took a trip to Port Vale Vs Reading and what a fantastic referee Peter Wright is. He doesn't look that old...

He gave a penalty to Reading which was stonewall and no one could complain about. He dealt with any little issues before they became bigger issues. What really stood out was how he did not fall for the Andy Carroll tricks of throwing himself to the floor. Also, the great advantage he played for the Port Vale goal.

A couple of easy cautions one for a high foot and another for a challenge that stopped a counter attack. Even the Reading assistant manager got cautioned for speaking out of turn.

Maybe one for the future... He can certainly get around the pitch with ease and had the respect from players as he was happy to communicate with them.

General Discussion / Re: Promotions 2023
« on: Thu 01 Jun 2023 19:06 »
Congratulations to everyone who has gained promotion this season.

But, I do worry for the state of refereeing in England. Like back in my day, you would never hear or see "double promotion" in one season. How can these referees be ready for the football league when in August they were a level 2B? To me it shows the lack of referees and football at lower levels will be played with NO REFEREE!!

I just go back to Stuart Attwell and how he rose up to the Premier League and it could of ended him as a referee. But, he has shown such resilience to come back stronger and has developed. I know Michael Oliver was young but his dad was a referee and he is natural and you don't get many natural referees.

I think it's about time The FA woke up and realises the state refereeing is in and try to put plans into place to get more people refereeing.

Mr Oliver just shows why he is pure class. The respect the players show him is clear to see.
The man has unbelievable fitness levels to keep going over a 100 minutes, then extra time and still position himself so well for key incidents is just incredable.
I find it funny how players go down with cramp yet they do half the running of a referee.

I have to say he's like a "Rolls Royce" just pure class. He makes refereeing look so easy.
Two clear penalties given with no dissent or silly penalty spot tactics from the players. They all know who the boss is when he is refereeing.
All bookings correct and he did play a few decent advantages. I just don't like this new advantage signal. Can we not go back to two arms?

He reminds me of Mark Clattenburg with the faces he pulls.
He's like an old school referee still using a notebook.

I went to Port Vale v Portsmouth today with a friend who is a Portsmouth fan.
I have never seen Craig Hicks before but it was not a good showing he never took full control. Portsmouth scored in the first half and then killed the game. Throw ins, goal kicks and free kicks took an age to happen yet Mr Hicks took no action neither did he look bothered by it.
He let players from both team surround him on numerous occasions with no action taken.
I would say on this showing a very long way off SG2.

General Discussion / Re: Retirement
« on: Thu 02 Jun 2022 22:11 »
I believe James Adcock has also retired.

Brett Huxtable too.

Huxtable appears to be relatively young. Is this due to an injury or moving away does anybody know ?

Brett also has a very young family. He does live in Great Torrington in Devon so every match is some distance for him to travel. I suppose with injury and young family something has to give.

General Discussion / Offside or not?
« on: Sun 27 Mar 2022 18:28 »
Hi,
I'm looking for a bit of advice.

If a ball is played through by an attacker and hits/deflected by a defender to another attacker in an offside position. Is that attacker offside?

Thanks!

I went to Forest Green Rovers Vs Port Vale and Charles Breakspear was fantastic.
His fitness levels are great and his communication and rapport with players was good too. He was constantly talking to players and played a couple of great advantages. Three cautions and they were very easy and clear to see why they were given.
10 out of 10 for me.
