2 select group 1 for Ipswich for both Blackburn and Southampton. Probably another next week for our game at Norwich as well.

I’m only theorising but I don’t think SG1 attention has been drawn to the East Anglian derby as regularly as one would think.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Barrott or Allison may well be drafted in for that match..

Happy to be corrected of course.

Agree. With the exception of the play offs the last time that a SG1 referee was appointed was Lee Probert in 2008. A number of those appointed to the East Anglian derby have gone onto promotion to SG1 but Trevor Kettle wasn't one of those. I'm also thinking that Sam Barrott is the likely contender.

Paul Howard and team saved a trip to Essex this evening with a local official postponing the game. 3 in a row at home now called off for us…

With rain forecast in these parts until late afternoon sadly there was unlikely to be any improvement. Fortunately the timing of the postponement has prevented a number of wasted journeys.

Tuesday 5th March - Saturday 16th March. In this timeframe, Sunny Gill will have refereed a game in each of England’s top 4 divisions. I wonder if this has ever happened before in such a short space of time. I doubt it…..

Far more likely to have happened previously prior to 1992.

General Discussion / Re: P TIERNEY - Forest v Liverpool

And I really don’t like Mark Clattenburg going on Five Live as a representative of Forest criticising the decision of the referee and quasi justifying the actions of the chairman.

If he didn’t justify the actions of the chairman it would have been a very public resignation.

Championship returns for Jeremy Simpson and Josh Smith. That will be Smith's 18th Championship match of the season, just a third of those involving Ipswich.

Who does everyone reckon will get the final? My money is on Sunny Singh Gill or Rebecca Welch.

More likely a longer serving official, as is usually the case.

That’s fair enough then. In that case, my guess would be Charles Breakspear, Neil Hair or Martin Coy. Maybe Sam Purkiss?

Since the formation of SG2 it has been out of the officials on the National List who have been appointed to this final. Charles Breakspear (along with Stockbridge and Toner) has already had the final. I was thinking of Scott Oldham but Blackpool's progress will have a big say in that.

There was just the one assistant. At the beginning of this fan video of the shoot-out you can see that there was a discussion about where the AR should be positioned. The only thing I can think of was that he was blocking a camera angle on the usual side.

Add to that David Rock abandoning at Cambridge after not very long!

9 minutes to be precise which must be one of the quickest abandonments of modern times on the EFL. There was a brief sight of the pitch on the local news after the game was abandoned, and whilst I would have some sympathy with David, I don't think the pitch would have been playable at the start of the game, just 9-10 minutes before it was abandoned. The rain was heavy yesterday but it was not a sudden monsoon. Perhaps David could have waited a bit to see whether conditions improved, as I recall Mr Horwood did at Gresty Road a few years back.

It does sound as though from those present that the match should never have started. It was a dry day in these parts until early evening. Cambridge University recorded a quarter of its average February rainfall between 7:30 and 8:30 which was rather unfortunate for last night’s match and those attending.

General Discussion / Re: Port Vale vs. Portsmouth

You have to love(!) the way the players just stood there watching and did absolutely nothing to help. They should all also be suspended for a game or 2...

Perhaps the idiotic "jobsworth" action of David Spain some years ago contributed to their inaction.

Exactly my thoughts

Really? Exactly your thoughts?
I would suggest that it is 99.99% certain that none of them would have ever heard of the incident you refer to and 99.99% certain that the 0.01% who maybe did weren’t actively thinking about it while todays disgrace took place.
Much more likely they just didn’t care??

I also doubt that they will be aware of that specific incident but it is far more likely that they are told to never to get involved with pitch invaders as there is a potential to be dismissed for violent conduct.

General Discussion / Re: Female Assistants

For some reason I had a match at Cheltenham in mind where this has happened previously.

The link below has Amy Fearn and Sian Massey-Ellis having assisted Darren Sheldrake on a match between Cheltenham and Morecambe in November 2010.

https://www.worldfootball.net/report/league-two-2010-2011-cheltenham-town-morecambe-fc/

I have yet to find anything else in relation to the assistants for that match.

Don’t think Ipswich have been give sg1 this season

Graham Scott did Rotherham v Ipswich, which was initially pencilled in for Gillett.

You’ve also had virtual SG1 material in Josh Smith and Sam Barrott.

Oh, and of course Gavin Ward 😉

Plus Tom Bramall for 1.66 matches.

The appointments on the EFL site has Paul Howard, Darren Drysdale and David Rock as the referees at Sutton, Tranmere and Wrexham. Blackpool v Exeter is TBC on there.

Cup Appointments / Re: Emirates FA Cup 2023/2024
« on: Fri 22 Dec 2023 16:18 »
I can understand why they may want two VARs given it's the standard in major competitions, and the second named VAR in many cases is an inexperienced VAR so suggests it's being used as part of a training exercise, but I don't understand why they're not named differently as seems the convention, e.g VAR, AVAR and OVAR.

Some clarification from the appointments on the FA site.

"Support VARs will be in place for the FA Cup third round proper ties where the technology is in operation. A role utilised for a number of UEFA, FIFA and other international fixtures, the Support VAR's duties will include assisting the VAR and AVAR with evaluating incidents and assisting with the communication between the officials."

Ed Duckworth seems to be the surprise appointment of the round. I've always had a high regard for Will Finnie, and Lewis Smith is seemingly taking another step on his way to the top.

Lewis Smith has now gone a couple of months without receiving a Championship appointment. Sunny Singh Gill appears to have overtaken him amongst the ERDG members aligned to the National Group. Neither particularly impressed at their Portman Road appointments this season.

Good appointments , pleased to see Hooper in the mix , Hatzdadakis must be injured he’s only been AVAR lately unless he’s in the championship this weekend

He is in the middle for Taunton v Farnborough on Saturday.
