Should’ve added George Courtney to the original list

General Discussion / First Name Last Name
« on: Wed 11 Jan 2023 23:26 »
There was an interesting question on Twitter to name as many footballers who’s last name could also be their first name.

For example:

John Terry
David Lee

I decided to take this one step further and name Premier League referees both current and former who meet this criteria.

Have I missed any and if not… what about opening it up to assistants and all officials in the Football League (past and present)

The ones I could name are:

Michael Oliver
Anthony Taylor
Mike Dean
Lee Mason
Graham Scott
Neale Barry
Paul Taylor
Phillip Don

General Discussion / 4th Officials Subs Board
« on: Mon 22 Jun 2020 21:22 »
Any reason why the 4th officials are not doing the boards at the subs? I assume it's to do with corona but can't see how that would cause much of a risk especially if the boards are cleaned before each game.

Sorry, I meant the Chelsea vs Man Utd game where Maguire should've seen red rather than the Spurs game

The same referee team (and VAR) for the Aston Villa vs Chelsea game that was very poor at Chelsea vs Spurs 3 weeks ago  ???

Nope, Totally Different Team.

Same referee, assistants and VAR on both games

I Spy Old Refs! / Re: Multi-Location Referees (movers)

Barber was clearly highly rated, FIFA and FA Cup Final. On the couple of times I saw him live ( and TV appearances ) his refereeing left me distinctly underwhelmed.

I believe he was the first referee to do the hat-trick of linesman, 4th official and referee at the FA Cup Final

Graham Poll started off in Stevenage, went to Tring then onto Tilehurst before ending back in Tring.

Graham Barber started off in another part of the country before moving to the same road as Poll in Tring

Tottenham Hotspur (First Team) v Southampton FC (First Team)      Live on BT Sport 1
FA Cup
Referee: Coote, David
Assistant Referee: Betts, Lee
Assistant Referee: Bennett, Simon
Fourth Official: Gillett, Jarred
Video Assistant Referee: Attwell, Stuart
Additional Video Assistant Referee: Perry, Marc

I thought this in round 3, I wonder what badge Jarred Gillett would wear. He is no longer on FIFA and it would be unfair on other referees if he has automatically been given the 3 Lions. Therefore, I would assume his county badge which would be highly unusual at this stage of the tournament.

I must actually get out more...

So what happens at the end of the year? Will Faghani and Gillett come off the FIFA list?

My understanding is to be a FIFA referee you need to be officiating in your countries top league. Therefore, unless he gets a promotion mid-season to the EPL he would not be given a white badge in January 2020.

General Discussion / Re: Acme Thunderer - a health hazard?
« on: Mon 03 Jun 2019 17:04 »
I often wonder with the open mic's, how it could affect the assistants, who must get it all in their ear.

I believe the comms system is configured to 'muffle' the sound of the whistle so whilst it can be heard it's not at it's full volume level

Does anyone know who the match officials were for the recent 'legends' game? I would assume they would be SG1 / SG2 officials?

FA Cup team having a run-out at The Bridge? Wilkes and Holmes have never lined in the FA Cup Final and 4O could be a parting gift for East.
Possibly, but Roger East has already officiated as an AR in the FACF (or was it still called linesman) in 2004 when Jeff Winter refereed the Final.

To the best of my knowledge, in recent times, an FACF AR (linesman) has never gone on to be a 4thO in an FACF; however, John Brooks or even Darren England (unlikely) could disprove the statistic !. Happy to be proved wrong

There have been a couple of referees who have done the hat-trick in the FA Cup Final:

Graham Barber
  • 1994 - Linesman (as they were then)
  • 1998 - Fourth Official
  • 2003 - Referee

Steve Bennett
  • 1995 - Linesman (as they were then)
  • 2001 - Fourth Official
  • 2007 - Referee

Assistant Referee: Smith, Rob

Fourth Official: Bramall, Thomas
