I assume different officials may well be appointed when the Newcastle game is rearranged. In "the good old days," the original officials would be reappointed when it was played, however long it took to be fixed, assuming they were still available of course.

Has Stroud some connection with Yorkshire?  Surely they are not sending him up there from the South coast twice in four days.

It would be interesting to hear what was said in the apparent animated conversation  at Stockley Park between Neil Swarbrick and VAR Stuart Attwell, pictured in The Times today and shown on TV yesterday.  As ever, the PGMOL remains silent when some sort of comment or explanation might just take the heat out of these controversies.

General Discussion / Re: M ATKINSON- Arsenal v Villa
« on: Mon 09 Nov 2020 09:14 »
Pity there seems to be far more emphasis these days in looking for reasons to disallow goals rather than awarding them.  That incident apart though, it appeared to be a fairly incident free game with Atkinsons low key and cardless approach paying off.

General Discussion / Re: Nobby Stiles RIP
« on: Sat 31 Oct 2020 07:36 »
Smashing player in the old school when players had to be able to give and take and just get on with the game.
Superb in the 1966 World Cup and it was great to witness his dancing along the touch line along with Bobby Moore after the presentation, what a superb atmosphere at Wembley that day!

I had the pleasure of watching Nobby many times and always admired his tenacity and his reading of the game. Sad thing is that he would not have lasted five minutes in the modern game.

RIP Nobby and thanks for many good memories.
Very sad news indeed.  As we watched the tributes last night Mrs R commented what a pity it is that his kind of player has been lost to the modern sanitised game.  "He would have been suspended most of the time" she said as we watched another tackle fly in. "And how would today's players cope with those pitches?"  I don't  always agree with her but I reckon she was spot on.

Given the issues with Covid in Europe... I’m wondering whether if this escalates the UCL could be in jeopardy, particularly with the issues surrounding officials and quarantine.
Looking increasingly likely I would say with new lockdown measures in France and Germany and the UK situation looking worse by the day. It's hard to see how things will be able to carry on with freedom of movement  affecting an increasing number of teams and officials across Europe in what seems to be a rapidly deteriorating situation.

Non Footy Appointments / Re: Gallagher Premiership Final
« on: Fri 23 Oct 2020 14:11 »
Craig Maxwell-Keys has been appointed

Shocked but pleased, has developed well (although there are others IMO ahead of him)

Source - Premiership Rugby
I agree it is a shock although he does seem to have grown into the job of late.  I recall a friend of mine who knows much more than I about these things and whose opinion I always respect, saying, I think in his first season in the Premiership, that he thought Maxwell-Keys was the poorest referee he had ever seen at this level.

All the best to Wayne Barnes for a speedy and safe recovery.

G R Lewis (Malvern) was George Lewis (I used to work with him).

Gosh, I'd  forgotton quite how eccentric and flamboyant he was.  But for all that ,  he was indeed a very good and well respected referee.  Makes Mike Dean seem utterly normal !

Non-Footy Board / Re: Champions Cup Final
« on: Sun 18 Oct 2020 10:00 »
I agree with most of what RCG has said but I didn't think Owens seemed quite his usual ebullient self yesterday.  He did nearly lose his temper though with the TMO  over the problem at the end about the apparent non stopping of the clock ("I am not interested in what happened 'technically' - was the clock stopped or not?").

I also found interesting the conversation with the TMO near the end about the high tackle by the Exeter player.  Owens seemed to be exploring reasons why he need not card the player, an attitude I found quite refreshing and one I would like to see more of by some referees who sometimes are too quick on the draw to produce a card in the round ball game.

Thank you JT - that's far more than I ever imagined.

A very good referee who used to get many top First Division appointments in his 15 years on the national list.  By profession he was an overhead linesman with the then Midlands Electricity Board so in addition to reaching the heights in his career as a football linesman and referee, he also did the same in his day job!

He was based in Stonehouse, a small town in Gloucestershire, which had the distinction of having a second leading League referee at about the same time in Brian Srevens - I suppose making it the Tring of its day.

Ross' expenses will be low as he spends most of his time in London 😏
I also thought he was standing down from international football now he is head of his Party
You know politicians - day one thing and do the complete opposite!

Coughs... SNP and train journeys....

I’ll get my coat.

With a cough like that I'd stay indoors for 10 days

Or travel to Barnard Castle to get it seen to
Good for getting eyesight checked at the same time.

Same opinion from Halsey too.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12843583/manchester-united-martial-sent-off-tottenham-lamela/

He does raise the possibility that Taylor didn't see what Lamela did.  Personally, I would have thought that was unlikely given the 2 players were close and the 2 acts were only a second apart - probably less time than it then took Lamela to clutch his face and collapse. The chances of Taylor suddenly focusing on Martial in that second from something else seems remote.  In any case, if he didn't see it, that reaction should have sent warning signals to an experienced referee he may have missed something.  Of course, it does raise the question of Attwell's input as VAR and presumably Sky heard that.  As discussed on another thread, that might have given enlightenment at least in part to the conversation and thinking of the officials.
Agree with Dave26 as a United fan that Shaw should have been red carded.  It was late, high, endangered an opponent with no chance of getting the ball.  A very unsatisfactory day for the officials I'm afraid, but well done to Spurs (with the exception of the disgraceful Lamela) for taking full advantage of United's pathetic performance.
And a similar opinion from Peter Walton in The Times makes it a hat trick from three former SG officials.

I Spy Old Refs! / Re: Gordon Kew - Profile
« on: Fri 02 Oct 2020 23:13 »
Gordon also took charge of the League Cup Final between Aston Villa and Everton which went to two replays and he refereed all three games.  The first two, at Wembley and Hillsborough,.ended in draws and the second replay at Old Trafford was narrowly won by Villa after extra time.  I attended all three and can't recall any controversial  incidents in any of them so reckon Gordon must have done well.  I am not sure if any other finals went to three games but a much better way to get a winner thsn the lottery of penalties, although I recognise the fixture congestion in the modern game can present a problem.
