This one ?
The linesman on the right of Ken Burns (left of picture) is Len Bates of Aldridge/Walsall, I was in the same RA as him in the 1970s.

General Discussion / Re: RIP Ken(neth) Baker from Rugby
« on: Mon 24 Aug 2020 21:40 »
Sad news. Thank you for letting us know.

Thoughts with his family and loved ones. Hugs to you Graham x

Hi bmb,
Hope that you and (not so) jnr are ok.
It's been a while since I contributed but this news devastated me, he really was a great family friend !.
Chances are that Andre will know (of) him know too.

I really want to make contact with his  lovely wife Dorothy, on behalf of my family, but have sketchy address details, The Green, Lullington, Rugby.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks bmb, xxx

Readingfan and Whistleblower,

It is very reassuring to know that RTR VETERANS not only recall 'refereeing icons of the past' but also sincerely, remember them too, thank you for your comments fellow refs !. KWB would be honoured to read your comments.

General Discussion / RIP Ken(neth) Baker from Rugby
« on: Mon 24 Aug 2020 18:21 »
Very saddened to report that Ken Baker, originally from Rugby and B'ham County FA, a superb referee of the 1980s and 1990s has passed away.
He was a great family friend and, having been ordained in the 1990s, conducted my late father's funeral in 1998.....one always remembers !.

You will be able to find many of my musings of KWB within this site, sadly I can't add more tonight, just rather upset. If anyone hears any further information please do contact me via a PM.

Well the less said about Kevin Friends appointment after recent performances the better , absolute gobsmacked no PL middles for Dean or Atkinson , Kavanagh seems to be in and out which I find strange
Kevin Friend is now getting his just rewards for a solid PL career; so called 'top six clashes' are restricted to a select, few referees and this season, along with his FACF appointment, KF has deservedly broken into that trusted band.
As for Dean and Atkinson not receiving 'middles', as has been trotted out many times over recent seasons, it's unheard of for an SG1 (or any other EFL referee) to officiate at that level EVERY match day.

General Discussion / Re: Your top 5 refs of the season
« on: Tue 21 May 2019 09:37 »
1.  Michael Dean
2.  Michael Oliver
3.  Martin Atkinson
4.  Chris Kavanagh
5.  Paul Tierney

Consistently good performances from the top three and consolidated steady progress from the latter two, imo !.

I rarely doubt edy's knewledge of European refereeing and again I am shown right not to
Edy's European refereeing knowledge is quite extraordinary; he correctly predicted all four CLSFs referees, all four ELSFs referees together with the CLF referee and the ELF referee in his P-A-R Euro League predictions. Quite remarkable, well done Edy !

What a pleasant change to read an objective report in regard to a referee's performance; thank you QuoCob !!.

It certainly reads better than the usual, opinionated dross...................missed an obvious penalty, awarded a goal-kick when it was a corner, should have shown a RC, blatant hand ball missed et al...... .

Congratulations to all of the appointed team; well done !.

FA Cup team having a run-out at The Bridge? Wilkes and Holmes have never lined in the FA Cup Final and 4O could be a parting gift for East.
Possibly, but Roger East has already officiated as an AR in the FACF (or was it still called linesman) in 2004 when Jeff Winter refereed the Final.

To the best of my knowledge, in recent times, an FACF AR (linesman) has never gone on to be a 4thO in an FACF; however, John Brooks or even Darren England (unlikely) could disprove the statistic !. Happy to be proved wrong

Lee Probert in charge of the Palace for the second time in three games. Andre Marriner gets to christen the new Tottenham stadium v Palace on 3rd April.
Yes, quite correct AT, and in addition Friend (Man City), Attwell (Man Utd), Atkinson (Liverpool) and Taylor (Arsenal) also take charge of the same team inside three games. Surely, The PGMOL can make a 'better fist' of their appointing criteria and avoid such duplication !!  ::)

Millwall FC (First Team) v Brighton & Hove Albion FC (First Team)
FA Cup

Very surprised; Martin Atkinson refereed Wolves in the last round of the competition at Bristol City, Andre Marriner also refereed Man City in the previous round at Newport  and Kevin Friend gets a middle and a 4thO appointment, just a day later. Methinks that Kevin is now the favourite for the FACF in May !.

General Discussion / Re: L MASON - WBA v Forest
« on: Thu 14 Feb 2019 12:53 »
Well good news for mason is he has been demoted further into league 2 this weekend! 😉
Whilst not a great admirer of Lee Mason, I have to say that his appointment to next Saturday's game had been published prior to Tuesday's match at The Hawthorns; hardly a 'demotion' just PGMOL fulfilling their obligation to provide SG1 officials to undertake matches in the Championship and EFL, as they do each matchday.

I think he is still one of the best we have.  Yes he is now in his 50s, and yes he is a bit flamboyant, but he very rarely makes a serious mistake.  As long as he can still keep his current level of fitness up, and he was right on top of things today, why should he even consider giving up?

I agree that he's been one of the best referees this season, after a below-par season or two previously - he's also been supported very well by his assistants.

I heard a discussion about refereeing on the radio earlier in the season where the presenter suggested that he believed this was intended to be Mike Dean's final season - I don't know whether that's correct or if circumstances might have changed. I hope Mike Dean considers refereeing for another year because of his form this season (he could potentially get to 500 Premier League games in that case!) but if he thinks it's right to end now or wants to go out on a high then that would be understandable too. He'll certainly be missed whenever he stops.

In the Premier League era, I presume that Mike Dean has refereed he most number of games? Can anyone advise of who is in second place?

Mike Dean has refereed the most PL games, in the modern era, followed by Martin Atkinson (approx 100 games fewer); the next three in order are, I believe, Graham Poll (329), Phil Dowd (307) and Howard Webb (297).

Thanks - although it just occurred to me that Andre Marriner might have made the cut because I seem to remember hearing the commentator saying for the Huddersfield V Man City game recently that he'd received a presentation before the match as it was his 300th game?

You could well be correct, I only had figures available until the end of 2017, hence I did not quote exact figures for Dean and Atkinson; Marriner may well have passed the 300 mark by now !. Thanks for pointing that out.
