General Discussion / Re: Rob Jones - Fulham v Spurs
« on: Sun 17 Mar 2024 19:37 »
I concur with takethejag. I’ve never been a big fan of Rob Jones, but yesterday was arguably the best performance I’ve seen at The Cottage this season. He quite literally didn’t put a foot wrong, it was near on faultless. What was also very noticeable watching the game live, was his empathy and rapport with the players, something I’d never noticed from Rob before. Credit where it is due, he was superb.

It’s as stonewall as stonewall gets. Surely the precise reason that VAR was brought in. Another shocker in a season of shockers, and the reason so many are losing faith

General Discussion / Re: L SMITH - Fulham v Villa
« on: Sat 17 Feb 2024 20:17 »
Just back from the game. I genuinely write this with a heavy heart, but that was very comfortably the worst refereeing performance I’ve seen at The Cottage this season, and perhaps even for a few seasons.
As someone on here previously alluded to, these refs are possibly given their debut at Craven Cottage due to the fairness of the crowd and it’s a nice environment to ease them in. I believe there’s probably some truth in that. Well, at the final whistle today, the whole ground (not Villa fans obviously) were as loud as I’ve ever heard, singing ‘you’re not fit to referee’.
I think Lewis Smith set his stall out today to let the game flow. I’m all in favour of that, as long as you still have a modicum of control. By the last 15 minutes it was carnage, he had completely lost the plot and it was anything goes territory. You just had no idea what he was going to do next. It was chaos.
There was a Fulham shot towards the end that took a massive deflection, and I mean massive, nothing subtle about it. All the players, Villa’s included, set up for a corner, only to see Smith pointing for a goal kick. He was the only person in the ground to think it wasn’t a corner. Why his assistants didn’t have a word in his ear, I don’t know. That turned an already rattled crowd into something I’ve never witnessed at Fulham. It became poisonous and toxic, all of it aimed in Smith’s direction for the last 10 minutes or so.
Smith then decided on just 5 minutes of injury time, despite Martinez deploying world class timewasting tactics for the entirety of the second half, along with a VAR check that took ages. In that 5 minutes, a Villa player was down injured and received treatment for over two minutes. Martinez again took an age over a goal kick. There was a substitution.
Smith played 20 seconds over 5 minutes and then blew the final whistle.
This was the catalyst for the derogatory songs in Smith’s direction that I mentioned before.
I’ve checked out a couple of Fulham forums in the three hours or so since the game, and every single post has mentioned how poor the referee was.
I really didn’t want to write a review of this ilk about Smith, but he was SO bad, there was no alternative

General Discussion / Re: Luton v Sheff Utd - Kavanagh/Tierney
« on: Sun 11 Feb 2024 13:44 »
In reply to MCPridz, even if they do fall under the stipulation of the handball rule, which if I’m honest, I don’t think they do, then they certainly don’t fall under the ‘clear and obvious error’ bar, and just for that reason alone, there’s no way Tierney should be intervening. My gut instinct is Howard Webb will be fairly angry with both

General Discussion / Luton v Sheff Utd - Kavanagh/Tierney
« on: Sun 11 Feb 2024 11:16 »
Only seen the highlights of this game, so can’t comment on the overall performance. The two penalties for handball though, what was Tierney thinking? I genuinely can’t fathom how he has come to the conclusion that they are pens. What has happened to ‘clear and obvious’? If neither of those pens had been given, no one would have batted an eyelid. They are so obscure, I honestly believe they wouldn’t have made the highlights reel.
The second one especially, awarded to Luton, is an abomination of a decision.
Although Tierney has to take the lion’s share of the blame, I also think Kavanagh needs to accept some responsibility. I know it’s difficult, but if I’m reffing that game, and get called over to the monitor to watch the either of those incidents, I’m 100% saying ‘thanks, but no thanks’ I’m sticking with my original decision of no pen.
I’d love to hear Howard Webb’s thoughts on these. Hope they’re included in the next edition of Mic’d Up.
Utterly ridiculous decisions IMHO.

General Discussion / Re: Fulham v Newcastle - Jarred Gillett
« on: Sat 27 Jan 2024 23:02 »
A top performance from Jarred, completely blended into the background and got everything spot on. Absolutely no complaints from me about Newcastle’s first goal, not with the on field officials anyway, by the letter of the law they are correct to allow the goal. Whether I agree with the law itself is a different matter!

Cup Appointments / Re: EFL Cup [Carabao Cup] - 2023/2024
« on: Wed 03 Jan 2024 19:27 »
I'd love to know if anyone has ever refereed a cup semi-final in their 1st season in the prem although it is a well deserved appointment for Sam. Less so for David Coote who given his performances this season doesn't warrant a semi-final. My prediction for the next leg is for Jarred Gillett to referee Chelsea vs Middlesbrough and Rob Jones to referee Liverpool vs Fulham.

Rob Jones is a Scouser (I believe?) so no chance of him doing our game with Liverpool

General Discussion / Re: Josh Smith - Fulham vs Arsenal
« on: Mon 01 Jan 2024 14:43 »
I thought Josh was decent again. A few baffling decisions, and the crowd around me in the Hammersmith End were getting very agitated with him, but personally I thought he was fine. He dealt very well with Arsenal’s theatrics and refused to buy any of it. I’ve never seen a team throw themselves to the ground for no reason as much as Arsenal did yesterday. It wasn’t even just the forwards, the defenders, Gabriel especially, were even worse. Utterly embarrassing from Arsenal IMHO, and well done to Josh for standing up to it.

General Discussion / Re: M Oliver - Arsenal v West Ham
« on: Sun 31 Dec 2023 10:04 »
Yet the Saka challenge he went down on for the penalty was exactly the same penalty that chelsea got given the night before, so therefore it should of been a penalty and it’s another one of the inconsistencies, and yes I do still want Olivier to referee our games, I just thought he wasn’t great in this instance, and the ball out of play has been proven it was out and we have had an apology from the PGMOL as there got the timing wrong when looking at the ball out of play and concluded it was

The Saka tackle wasn’t the same as the Chelsea one though! It was nothing like it. You can’t just make things up. The Chelsea one was a clear foul. The Saka one was a clear dive. That’s quite a difference.

And where is this so called apology from the PGMOL? I haven’t seen that anywhere. Or are you imagining things there as well!

Edited to fix quote thingamajigga, bmb

General Discussion / Re: M Oliver - Arsenal v West Ham
« on: Sat 30 Dec 2023 17:16 »
I usually say Michael Oliver is the best referee we have but tonight in our game he was very poor I thought, yes I get he had to give the first goal but it was out and you didn’t need to see the ball to see it was over the line you could see the line and the ere was no yellow on it, it was out so poor from Pawson on var there we should had 2 pens at least one for the foul on Saka as Chelsea virtually had a penalty for the same thing last night yet ours wasn’t given so poor there as well should of had one in the first half where ball had gone and Soucek went through on Jesus I think another poor decision, Oliver and Pawson wasn’t great West Ham’s penalty was stonewall there no complaints on that one though

The problem we have here MCPridz, is that you are basing your opinion that Michael Oliver had a poor game on two so called (by yourself) obvious penalties not given and the ball out of play goal. The ball out of play can’t be proved either way, and is certainly not Oliver’s call. End of argument.
As for the two non penalties, you are the only person on the planet, including quite a few Arsenal mates of mine, who seems to think they were fouls. Saka dived, it’s not even close to being a penalty. And as for the tackle by Soucek, anyone who thinks that is enough for a pen is deluded.
I’ve genuinely not heard an opinion from one other person, including all the comments on here, who thinks either tackle is a pen. It’s just you. And only you.
So that leads me to conclude that Michael Oliver is still a brilliant referee who gets the vast majority of KMI’s correct, and you’d make a bloody terrible assessor!

General Discussion / Re: Rob jones- Forest vs Bournemouth
« on: Sun 24 Dec 2023 12:24 »
The handball for the non penalty, I think we can excuse, as it’s a 50-50 toss-up these days as to what is and isn’t handball in the box. The law is an absolute mess and I actually feel sorry for the referees at this level having to make sense of it and having every decision scrutinised.

The sending off though. Wow. In a season that has set the lowest bar ever for poor decisions (IMHO) this one is the worst yet (again IMHO!). For me, Rob is a referee who gets too many simple decisions wrong. And this was simple. An excellent tackle, absolutely nothing to see here, move on. If anything, Boly gets fouled. But for some unfathomable reason Rob has invented a foul in his head. It’s plain crazy. Refs seem to be so confused these days, they’re seeing things that aren’t happening. We need to strip everything back to basics. Players are going to follow through when they tackle, it’s impossible not to. Admittedly some can be malicious, but refs at this level should be good enough to spot those ones. This tackle wasn’t though. So so poor from Rob, a referee who has never impressed me to the extent that he does others, and unfortunately, yesterday’s performance has only confirmed my opinion on him.

General Discussion / Re: Sam barrott - Newcastle vs Fulham
« on: Sat 16 Dec 2023 21:46 »
I thought the sending off for Jiminez was the correct decision. He was clearly rattled by what he perceived to be an elbow to his face a few minutes earlier, of which he possibly had a point, but there’s still no excuse for that challenge. Ridiculous, and the red was the correct outcome

I’ve seen Sam Barrott on quite a few occasions now, some in Fulham games, some on TV, and always been very impressed, especially in the Fulham games. Today though, I genuinely feel he struggled with the occasion. I really hope I can give a fair assessment of referees in Fulham games, win, lose or draw

I don’t like the way Marco Silva goes after referees in his post match interviews, and very rarely do I agree with him. Like Arteta, Klopp, Pep, et al, he can often come across as petulant and ignorant. Today though, I agree with his comments. In a post above, Failed Ref said refs are being undermined at all levels by these managers, and I agree with this. But, these refs also have to help themselves. That was a very tough watch today as a Fulham fan, or indeed Fulham manager, player, tea lady. Already down to 10 men, correctly so as I stated above, it was going to be bloody hard work. And Sam giving virtually everything to Newcastle and ignoring exactly the same offences the opposite way was hard to take. That crowd is so vociferous and so intimidating, it needs a very very strong ref to stand up and be counted. It needs the likes of Taylor, Brooks or Gillett, refs who treat both sides fairly and just give exactly what they see. I’m afraid today the complete opposite happened.

Fulham lost fair and square, no refereeing decisions altered the outcome, but as an away team at St James Park you just ask to be treated with respect and fairness. I genuinely don’t believe that happened today.

I really rate Sam, think he will go on to be a fixture at this level for a long time. But I really hope he learns how to deal with an atmosphere like today. Far too much went unfairly the way of the home side, yellows given one way but not the other. Hopefully the assessor picked up on this.

I genuinely wish Sam all the best and hope today was a big learning curve. If he sits down to watch a rerun of the game I think he will also feel that perhaps he was a little too one way

Let me finish by saying there was only one man on that pitch who really let Fulham down today though, and that was Jiminez

General Discussion / Re: Michael Oliver - Everton vs Chelsea
« on: Mon 11 Dec 2023 16:14 »
I think Michael Oliver was 100% right on this. Palmer clearly tries to simulate a foul by putting one of his legs into the Everton player and then going down in an attempt to win a penalty. Problem for Palmer is he got it all wrong and realised he’d made himself look a proper wally and swiftly jumped up again!
Dermot on Ref Watch got it all wrong, not for the first time, and to be honest I’m losing a fair bit of respect for his opinions.
Well done Michael Oliver for spotting it in real time. A fantastic decision.

General Discussion / Re: S ATTWELL - Sheff U v Brentford
« on: Sun 10 Dec 2023 19:31 »
That’s a shocker from Rob Jones. Really bad. It’s a horrible tackle and one of the clearest red cards you could wish to see. I thought Attwell could’ve possibly spotted it in real time, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. No excuse for Jones though. I’d love to hear his logic for not recommending an OFR. What can Howard Webb do when one of his supposed better refs can’t spot something this obvious? I’ve never understood the hype around Jones, he seems highly rated by many, but personally I nearly always find his performances pretty underwhelming

I haven’t seen the whole game, just highlights. For me it’s a clear push on the Sheffield Utd player in the box and an obvious penalty. And Liverpool’s 2nd goal is also a clear foul. When the Liverpool player wins the ball, it’s a clear scissor tackle, find it hard to fathom how Simon missed that
