Not the best first half from the football perspective, and it would be fair to say imo that Allison while far from being bad, has been a bit jittery on his PL debut (visible most in terms of foul detection/selection). Both of the two cautions given were nailed on though, and the latter YC (to Hamer) was a very good decision. In general, not too much to report though, and little for 'non-refereeing people' to get excited about either way.

Very challenging 1H with numerous penalty area incidents (I counted five!) to solve as well as Sheffield United 'pulling out all the stops' in an away performance.

Overall Taylor is doing fine, imo (and VMOs correct not to intervene in any of the 'episodes').

Can't comment on the rest of the half but both goals should (probably) have been disallowed for offside :/.

General Discussion / Leeds vs. Leicester, Dean Whitestone
« on: Fri 03 Nov 2023 20:59 »
Whitestone was definitely right to play on in the penalty area incident that Sky just showed at halftime - you can see how deliberately the Leeds attacker put his right foot down on the ground (especially relative to where the ball was), waiting to generate a contact with the defender. No foul; correct play on (and as the pundits said, his position was optimal there). However, I think Daniel Farke had some justification to his protests which brought him a caution, it seems like Whitestone missed a clear foul on the later counterattack. While the commentators were talking about a 'possible penalty', the foul looked outside the penalty box to me - and also a potential DOGSO too...

Saw nobody had posted about these two games, so despite not watching either game in the biggest detail, wanted to open a post and was curious for other users' thoughts too!

David Webb in Sheffield Wednesday vs. Peterborough

Despite not having the most optimal decision-making at all times, Webb had a really nice style/demeanour imo (probably an anology that means nothing to anyone haha but he reminded me of the old East German official Adolf Prokop) and I enjoyed watching him ref this remarkable game.

Controversies:

Was the enlargement of additional time justified?
Yes! There were two stoppages for Peterborough injuries within the allotted minutes, one which lasted roughly 80secs and another about 20sec. The equalising goal was scored on +97:30 with six mins signalled. The officials 'won' here against delaying tactics, well played.

What about the Ayden Flint foul?
Unfortunately Peterborough can feel very hard done by here - Flint should have been sent off, his foul was a clear example of DOGSO. I don't want to be too harsh, but my feeling is that the freekick + red card decision against the hosts would obviously have been a very big decision, and maybe one a bit too big for Webb on this dramatic evening...

Michael Salisbury in Barnsley vs. Bolton

The Preston-based SG1 official stepped in for Josh Smith at late notice and did a decent enough job, IMO. Some calls were wrong (the booking for Bolton's Portuguese player Santos was a mistaken identity case, instead his teammate should have been cautioned for the foul), but in a normal-difficulty match, Salisbury was okay from what I saw. Bolton were angry that Salisbury awarded a foul which ultimately led to the only goal but: a) it was a blatant example of impeding the progress of an opponent with contact, and, b) it came at least two/three phases of play before the score anyway! :D

(others feel free to chip in if I missed sth ofc! :))

Many incidents for Kavanagh today on his PL return. He could have hoped for a quieter game back! Clips here:

So far, so good for the rookie referee from Swindon in a 'big six' PL game. Besides not cautioning De Gea/Fernandes for mobbing dissent at 45' (and we know there is a de facto carte blanche on this from PGMOL...), I would say faultless 1H by Simon Hooper!

(NB: I missed first bit of the game, but checked a liveticker and seems I didn't miss anything).

I only saw the two key scenes of the game. Here:

1) https://vk.com/video-12919375_456268836?t=2h8s
> I would expect a Level 2A/B referee to have the positional sense to move left before the (obvious) centre into the box, let alone the fourth best referee in the world's biggest football country, but he is caught flat-footed and misses the offence
> Just imagine if there was no VAR (easy to imagine on this afternoon..), and this handball was left unpunished; like Jones's in Forest vs. West Ham, that would be embarrasing
> Tierney misses a blatant(!!!!!) offside before the penalty... absolute basics, scandalous mistake
> Can someone please explain to me how this isn't DOGSO?! :D

2) https://vk.com/video-12919375_456268836?t=2h31m46s
> Kavanagh isn't concentrated enough to perceive anything(!!) from this scene himself; completely misses everything (it seems)
> Well done to Daniel Robathan, who is! Excellent concentration, rightly perceives Gabriel's VC, so red card is given
> Gabriel impedes the progress of his opponent without the ball is playing distance, then kicks at him, and the result is he gets the freekick and is only booked... right :D

Terrible impression of the officials from these scenes. Tierney should be suspended for his mistake, and Kavanagh hardly convinced either. Again, is incredible to me how a referee so deeply mediocre is ranked as our fourth best internationally (and yes, presenting these skills in the second/third division in Croatia, Bulgaria et al. where there is no VAR either to bail you out either (easy to see why they were so desperate to have it on for him today), you would be demoted).

Tough debut in our leagues for the experienced Scottish referee it seems:

Don't follow EFL so closely, but to me it seems like games at Valley Parade often become very challenging due to intense atmosphere there. Easy to be wise after the event of course, but to send Madden there for his first competitive game seems a very naive choice by M. Jones (is him who does L1/L2 appmnts, right?).

A bit of 'fun' from seasons past (assume that is in order bmb and co?): the key decisions from the controversial Chelsea vs. Burnley game in Feb/2015, and, for reference the (infamous!) delegate's report leaked to the Daily Mail in the days after the game. Martin Atkinson was the referee.
