General Discussion / Level 1 trial matches
« on: Fri 28 Apr 2023 12:35 »
Now is the time where the likely prospects for promotion from L2A to L1 happens. Anybody identified the likely L2a promotion candidates?

VAR IS BRILLIANT!!!

Any interesting match - a brilliant award of the 2nd Grimsby penalty for the hit out by the SOTON centre-half. But very disappointed about the time taken for the VAR review for the 1st penalty and that the AR2 got Walcott's offside for the disallowed goal wrong.

Without VAR, Grimsby would have been incorrect eliminated from the Cup. Probably the first match they have played with it in operation

From an unbiased Mariner.

I am sure you have all seen the rant by the Dorking manager / Chairman / whatever other jobs he does after Saturday's match.

The National League is made up of mostly FT players (at the top of their game) but the referees are still on their promotion track. He doesn't seem to realise that the best referees get promoted to the EFL and the NL is left with new trainees to fill their spots. It is a similar  point made by the Women's league and League 1 & 2 clubs.

Since the players are FT, should we be looking at expanding the pool of FT referees. I know it would cost the FA a massive sum, but the extra training and resources must improve the quality of the officials. Also, the FT could employ ex-pro's (which is what they want to do) and get them though the system. With the EPL/EFL. NL and WSL there would be 65-70 matches per weekend to be covered. Working on the normal 1.5 officials per match, you would need c100 referees and c100 assistants (as some assistants may wish to retain their jobs and not become FT).

Any thoughts

General Discussion / Quality of referees
« on: Mon 17 Oct 2022 08:03 »
All we get from spectators, players and team officials at all levels, is that the referees aren't good enough for them...

But given the lack of numbers becoming referees and joining adult football, how do we improve? We as referees, know that to replace those at the top of the profession is a 3-5 years turnaround.

But can money turn this around? Will the FA invest significant more money in referee development?

Given Gareth Southgate is reported to be on a £4M bonus for winning the world cup, could this be available to the CFA for their development programs? But this would be only c £100K per CFA

General Discussion / Promotion - who goes up to SG1 & SG2
« on: Tue 11 May 2021 10:36 »
What changes do we expect to the SG1 & SG2 referees?

Are any of the SG1 likely to retire at the end of the season?

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Oh dear - brilliant positioning?

Should be a drop-ball restart to the defending goal-keeper, but I don't know how the game was actually re-started. Bet the other team would be happy about that!  ;D

General Discussion / 20/21 Season - when will we restart?
« on: Tue 12 May 2020 11:14 »
Given the Government announcement about there being an indefinite ban on sporting crowds, when do we feel we can start the 20/21 season and at what level.

Without match day income, that effectively makes EFL, NL and Step 3 to 6 unsupportable financially to start again. Do we think that there will be a 20/21 season?

I think that we will be allowed to start at the lowest level in September, but the 20/21 may not commence until 2021......

General Discussion / 20/21 NLS restructuring
« on: Wed 20 Nov 2019 13:14 »
An email from the FA about potential changes in refereeing structure following the changes to the NLS for 20/21. Anybody got any further information?

Changes to National League System/Refereeing Pyramid – Season 2020/21

As many of you will be aware, the on-going restructure of the National League System will be completed in readiness for the start of season 2020/21. These changes will result in the creation of a “pure” football pyramid from Step 1-Step 6, including the creation of additional divisions at Step 3, Step 4 and Step 5, and the repositioning of what is currently Step 7 outside of the System to be known as ‘Regional NLS Feeder Leagues’ – this bridging the gap between County and National League System football.

These changes have necessitated a review of the refereeing structure. During this review it has become apparent that the refereeing pyramid will need to adapt to the changing football environment to ensure consistency of appointments both in terms of the type/balance of appointment (referee v assistant referee) and the level of match officials used on a particular step in the National League System.

As a consequence, the FA Referees’ Committee unanimously agreed to changes to align the refereeing pyramid as closely as possible with the National League System and thereby provide a consistent environment for referees operating at a specified level, whilst aiming to retain accessibility for referees nationwide.

Discussions are taking place to finalise the necessary changes and we will be communicating directly with impacted parties (leagues, match officials, County FAs) in December, both on a national and regional basis. In addition to written correspondence, we will be holding face to face meetings.

General Discussion / Sin Bins - 2019/20 season
« on: Tue 13 Nov 2018 08:19 »
With the introduction of sin bins at Step 7 and below for dissent, an interesting thought has crossed my mind.

Currently, it is the same sanction for dissent as delaying the game = caution. Under the rules changes, dissent = sin bin; delaying the game = caution.

Situation 1 - first half, player kicks the ball away after offending. Is this dissent or delay of the game?

What is your decision?

Situation 2 - exactly the same reaction, but 9 minutes to go?

Do you change, given that treating it as dissent = 1 player down for the rest of the game?
