The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) has confirmed that the upcoming BetMcLean Cup final between Linfield and Glentoran will see Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology used for the first time in Northern Ireland domestic football.
The decider between Belfast rivals Linfield and Glentoran will be played at Windsor Park on Sunday, 15 March at 15:00 GMT.

"This milestone represents a significant step forward for domestic football, aligning the league more closely with European competition standards," read a statement released by NIFL on Friday.

"While VAR will not replace the authority or judgement of the on-field referee, it will serve as a technological support mechanism aimed at enhancing decision-making accuracy, fairness, and transparency in key match incidents.

"The fixture will be officiated by Irish FA match officials on the field of play. However, VAR operations for this match will be managed by experienced referees from outside Northern Ireland using the Hawk-Eye system, as used in Fifa and Uefa competitions, ensuring technical proficiency during this introductory phase."

As a consequence of this - rumours have been that two Referees have withdrawn from their League games this weekend in protest at the decision.

NI only has 3 referees who are trained to referee under VAR conditions - so this limits the pool of those they can appoint to such games severely.

Finally - NI does not have any trained VARs - so the IFA have been trying to fumble around to get the necessary bodies in from another country.

All in all - this smacks highly of a short-sighted gimmick from the IFA

It is an easy mistake to make when the handball takes you by surprise, but that was a really terrible and indefensible decision unfortunately :/.

Have to say - that was a classic referee shirt.

Still got the grey version in a draw somewhere

Should have caveated - I was referring to the offside goal earlier on - not the peno

For someone who has only come across my radar recently - he’s the next top table performer in England - summed up by his first PL game when he didn’t get railroaded into a decision by the VAR.

Very impressed by him so far

Which County is Lewis registered with?

All down to lazy reliance thinking that VAR would bail you out - and then remembering the Competition Rules later on.

Only managed to see about 2/3 rds of the game owing to accompanying my wife for an urgent opticians appointment,

Did she get a phone call from Stockley Park to head down at short notice?

Thoughts on the penalty claim in the second half with the bear hug and pull to the ground?

On days like that - I’m glad BBC Radio finally got rid of Alan Green

I have a feeling there might be a VAR change for Liverpool vs Arsenal tomorrow

John Brooks now listed as VAR for this match on the Premier League website.

No surprise whatsoever that Salisbury has
been hooked for today. That’s pretty much a PGMOL admission that he got the intervention totally wrong.

And quite rightly giving Fulham more ammunition for when they speak to the powers that be

So - we can expect consistency to go flying out of the window then?

Application of Law has now been replaced by the mindset of “who you know - not what you know”
