General Discussion / Re: Worst performance ever
« on: Sun 25 Jan 2026 19:29 »
I recall Kevin Friend having an absolute nightmare in a match at Old Trafford - I want to say it was Man United v Bournemouth.

This one?

Was a tad chaotic at times.

General Discussion / Re: C KAVANAGH - AFCB v Arsenal
« on: Sat 03 Jan 2026 21:20 »
Not the cleanest performance from Kavanagh but given his circumstance I will cut him a bit of slack today.

Semenyo maybe a little fortunate to remain on the field. If anything Rice was too kind by staying on his feet. Unsure if there was enough of a pull to warrant a foul but one that could go either way.

Should’ve kept the game going at the end for the cross. You don’t stop the game in the attacking phase like he did there. That was a poor error in my opinion.

...and blew the whistle dead on the 6 minutes of added time.... Despite  2 more minutes of blatant time wasting by Arsenal during stoppage time alone.

45 seconds to take a single corner.

That's 2 home games in a  row I've sat and watched a significant chunk of the game just waiting for the opposition to restart play.

It really needs to stop.

It is time that officials really clamped down on time wasting. We pay a lot of money to watch games live. The blatant time wasting is extremely irritating and means we get less value for money.

Bournemouth v West Ham (Bramall)
Bmb must he getting blown away in the wind and rain, as I think has Bournemouth's defence! However main moment was a pen given for handball on the ground. Good identification of handball by Bramall I must say. Potential DOGSO? I only saw it once, however looked like a clear shot on goal had the offence not occurred.

Not seen that yet to comment... but thought I'd add that both of West Ham's goals came from (IMHO) poor decisions from Bramall/Assistant.

First goal.. (bear with me...) AFCB on the attack, ball played into Evanilson who was marginally offside. Assistant puts flag up, then lowers it after the ball was cleared. West Ham clear the ball into our half, and after a short midfield tussle, we come away with the ball. No-one anywhere near offside this time, but the assistant flags again.
Surely this is a new phase of play... but no, offside given. From the kick, long ball played in which end with the goal resulting. Should have been defended, granted, but if the freekick isn't very belatedly given, then it doesnt happen.

Second goal, Brooks clearly fouled 10 yards from the West Ham box, not given (if we could all see it then surely the assistant in front of us should have done) ball goes near the halfway line near the touchline, Brooks chasing back, there's a brouhaha which ends in Brooks and the opponent getting booked. Kick West Ham, ball into the box, they score. So, ok the ball should have been defended, but these were virtually the only times the ball got into the AFCB area all game, and they would not have happened had the decisions been made properly (IMHO)

Apart from those two incidents, I thought Bramall had a decent enough game in awful conditions,  with some 50/50s going either way.

Continues at St James Park. A clear foul and penalty for the late tackle on Phil Foden. What is Craig Pawson looking at?

There's an unwritten rule that they are never given once the attacker has got their shot away, they are very rarely given.  That isn't just an England thing, it happens at senior levels of football all over the world.

That doesnt make sense to me. Anywhere else on the field, if a player makes a pass then gets clattered 100 milliseconds later, it's a foul every day of the week.

If in the penalty area, it's not given if he gets a shot away. I could understand it if the ball has gone out of play before contact, but in Foden's case, if it's a FK anywhere else on the pitch, then it's still a foul, and a penalty.

General Discussion / Re: "injuries"
« on: Fri 19 Sep 2025 18:49 »
I think it's about time that players who stay down and delay the restart of play should have to go off for the mandatory 30 seconds as if the physio had been called on.

Might curb some of the brick-outhousery we see especially towards the end of games.

Prety much agree with comments above re: red cards. I called both of them right away.

The Kovatic DOGSO was remarkably similar to the Saliba on Evanilson incident at our place back in the autumn.
I know Iraola said Cook's red wasn't correct, but I don't agree. If we appeal it, it won't get overturned meanign Cook will miss the first 2 games of next season as well.

8
Clear penalty to Stockport, but think there is a strong case for DOGSO. Defender literally flicks the ball off the forward's head, without which he has a close range free header.

9
Dear me. Stockport badly sawn off there. Can only think the officials either missed the flick or thought the defener was the one who got the touch.

General Discussion / Re: Felix Zwayer - PSG v Arsenal
« on: Thu 08 May 2025 12:15 »
Correct intervention.100% always a penalty in uefa. Understandable arsenal fans were frustrated as it would never be given in England.
Zwayer excellent so far

They do get given in England.

Ask Tyler Adams. (AFCB v West Ham last December) He was jumping as a ball was crossed and got a barely discernable nick with didnt affect the flight of the ball into the area. Certainl;y wasn't a consequential deflection.. No-one appealed yet VAR stuck their oar in and a penalty was awarded.

11
I see today that Francisco Evanilson's red card has been rescinded on appeal. I make no comment on that or the original decision. However, if a sending off is overturned on appeal, can it not be reduced to a caution (if deemed appropriate) in some cases or is it always an "all or nothing" situation? If the latter, it seems unfair to me that the foul play (a tackle in this case) goes totally unpunished.
It can't be downgraded to a caution as officially it remains on the player's record as a dismissal - it's just the suspension that is withdrawn.

Is that right?

So if the red is overturned, but he gets another red later in the season, he would get an additional game ban for it being the 2nd dismissal of the season? or not?

12
News this morning that Evanilson's red card has been overturned.

Right decision, but I am surprised, because I didnt expect them to overturn it.

I also understand that when the tackle was played back for the VAR and the ref, they didnt even show the slip, just what happened afterwards.

Puts me in mind of a penalty we conceded at Brentford on a VAR a season or two back, when they only showed Senesi apparently pushing Toney to the ground when 2 secs before, Toney had gripped Senesi's arm preventing him from getting goal-side. The commentators called it "clever" by Toney, rather then calling it out for what it was.

It seems part oif the problem with VAR is the lack of context presented to them/the referee, with just the outcome being shown and not what led to it.

There was also an incident in the Man Utd home game last season when we were given a penalty right at the end with the score 2-2. VAR looked at it and deemed that the trip was just outside the box, without considering the blatant pullback on one of our players in the box as he tried to playthe loose ball a fraction of a second later as play continued. Penalty overturned and a DFK given on the edge.

I think this is one area where VAR needs to get better. I wonder if the criticism of the time issue is leading to hasty decisions based on a selective view.

13
I actually think the Adams one in the first half is worse. And could have caused serious damage. If that was for example casemeiro we all know the red would have been out in a flash.
2 clear holding offences on Maguire in the box not given, no different to any penalty for holding we’ve seen this season , and it still goes unpunished

Bankes back to his usual self. Poor

The Adams incident... it's one of those where both players have gone in full blooded, it's a genuine 50:50 and milliseconds either way depends on who commits the foul. A red and subsequent 3 game ban is a punishment out of all proportion to the offence.

I'd say the same with the Evanilson incident. a 3 game ban for slipping (becaise that's what it was)  is unconscionable.
If he doesnt slip, he wins the ball cleanly and fairly.

14
That's two years in a row we've been done over by VAR at home to Man Utd.

I was surprised when Evanilson was booked, never mind that VAR then deemed it a red. I woukld expact we will appeal that, but it won't get overturned as we are not Arsenal or Man Utd.

No arguments with Adams yellow, when two players launch in like that, whoever comes 2nd is always going to see a card.
I suspect that the red will be rescinded, look who you are playing in the next few games.

It won't. Checking club badge..........
