At first glance, it looked like a handball from my viewpoint at the game. Mr Hallam was obviously closer to the action and having seen the incident again on screen, would agree with his no penalty verdict. While understanding the rationale for not replaying 'contentious' incidents on the big screen during matches, it would have been informative here.

Hadn't seen Mr Hallam in action previously during his rise up the refereeing ladder. It seemed an encouraging PL debut, played a couple of good advantages and while there were a couple of times he let things go, which arguably merited a free-kick, kept control of the game

Ross Martin in the middle for Rovers' trip to Cambridge. Not a name I'm familiar with, there was a report on here from OwdReds about his handling of the Accrington v Milton Keynes game, which sounded a bit of a mixed bag.

3
Darren Drysdale in the middle for my first Tranmere game of 2026. Don't think he's been in the middle at Prenton Park for a while. The last match I recall was vMilton Keynes, where he was generally reasonable, until an incident near the end where one of the visiting bench threw water at the home fans after a late winner. No action either at the time or subsequently/

After these matches have played could posters please make comments on performances in the general discussion thread . This area is appointments-only many thanks for your cooperation.
I agree with elbee94 on this. My use of the general discussion board for these games tends to be limited to something out of the ordinary, rather than a general evaluation of a particular referee.

As a moderator, perhaps you could look at creating a sticky thread for L1, L2 & NL referees on the general discussion thread, similar to Pyramid Patrol? That might address the points raised while channelling post-match  comment to that thread.

Anyone seen Dale Baines in action? I wasn’t at the Rovers v Fleetwood game yesterday and will try to catch fuller highlights later, but seemed to have made a negative impact on home fans in a game ending in a home win.

A poor decision from James Bell there.

I note that Thibaut didn’t appear for Crewe at the Walsall Boxing Day match, so appeal against the red card either unsuccessful or hasn’t taken place yet?

I am aware of two incidents in Rovers games last season where it was admitted the wrong decisions were made, although dont know if it was specifically Mike Jones they were discussed with

General Discussion / Re: Select Group 1 - Club Allegiances

Rob Jones lives on the Wirral, but definitely not a Tranmere fan.

Is there a reason why PGMOL just don't provide information about the allegiances at the start of each season?

There was definitely contact for the penalty, Ryan, having seen the goal highlights.
I thought Mr Guest had a good game, though as he was running the line at the opposite side to me, you’d be better equipped to assess.

Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team) v Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Joyce, Ross
Assistant Referee: Simpson, Joe
Assistant Referee: Guest, Danny
Fourth Official: Gray, Alex

A fairly good performance from Ross and team I thought. Played some lovely advantages and was happy to speak to players. Gave strong signals to tell players it’s not a foul or to get up. One or two times him and AR1 went different ways on throw-ins, but eventually the correct decision was given. I’m not sure if Boz was there or where they were sat, but I couldn't tell from the opposite side of the ground whether the Crewe second goal should’ve been a free kick or not. I’m not taking anything away from the free kick though - what a strike! A lot of Tranmere fans are saying it’s not a foul but of course they’d say that! Also, I liked how Ross warned our captain about time wasting very early one. This allowed Crewe to be on their final warning after 20 or so minutes.

Onto the game - wow. I’m not sure where that Crewe team really came from, especially after Wednesday night. I think the game came down to we took our chances whilst Tranmere didn’t. (Which is unusual for us as we usually can’t take our chances at all, Oldham last month being an example). Onto next Friday now, where Crewe are hoping to fill the stadium against Bristol Rovers, who just sacked their manager!

I haven't been able to watch any extended highlights back yet, but my impression during the game was that Mr Joyce was inconsistent and his foul detection erratic. The defensive error which ended with a Rovers defender clattering his keeper and Murphy requiring 9 minutes treatment before resuming looked more like a Crewe free-kick on the edge of the penalty area than the one he did award, which led to the second Crewe goal. I was level with the action but on the opposite side of the pitch and from my viewpoint it seemed the Crewe player had cut across Norman initiating contact. Unless it was for some verbals, the YC shown to Norman, which was the first in the match, seemed harsh in the context of what Mr Joyce hadn't deemed worthy of a YC earlier, for offences normally attracting a caution, one example being the tug on a Rovers player in a much more central position outside the box, only a free-kick. The penalty award, which effectively sealed the game, was not incorrect, but one of those technical  ones which are engineered by the attacking player initiating contact. Rovers had what looked like two strong shouts for a spot-kick, but would need to see again before evaluating.
I was positioned behind the near-side AR(Mr Simpson?) and he didn't seem to be having the best of games and it looked like a possible offside when the Crewe attacker had a one on one blocked midway through the first half.

The least said about the match from a Rovers perspective, the better. I thought Crewe shaded the first half, but were more clinical with their chances, but the second half was so one-sided and the scoreline could have been even more comfortable for the visitors. The difference in average age was certainly a factor over time; 22 to our 29, there is a lot of talent on show in their side and it's a surprise that they are not higher up the table.

Ross Joyce refereed the Tranmere v Crewe fixture back in October 2023 (albeit it being at Crewe). In that game, he sent off two Tranmere players - one for the goalkeeper for handling the ball outside the box. Crewe won that game 2-0. More of the same please!!
I can't recall the full details now, but the first red was prefaced by what looked like a handball from the Crewe attacker and the second was when Tom Davies already on a yellow lost his footing on a slippy surface and went into the Crewe player late in the game, felt he could reasonably have let that go with a final warning. Mr Joyce isn't a personal favourite, but had a good game when I saw him last season v Cheltenham. More of that same for me!

Praising some other officials, Peter Bankes with a correct penalty decision up at Man City for Leeds

No issue about the penalty, but very inconsistent approach to what constituted a foul from Mr Bankes.

General Discussion / Re: Grimsby-Tranmere. Will Finnie
« on: Fri 28 Nov 2025 19:06 »
Good to see Will Finnie back in action. Tranmere quite lucky their opening goal has stood though. Two strong offside shouts against Ironside in the attacking phase

Decent display overall in a not too tricky game. The only issue in the second half, Tranmere #42 was booked on 87’ but it should’ve been his second after Finnie didn’t give him a pretty blatant yellow just a few mins before.

The first Rovers goal looked tight, but I'd agree Ironside appeared marginally offside.
Possible issue with the Grimsby leveller with their player in an offside position running in front off and arguably distracting Murphy, the Rovers keeper, before the scoring shot was struck?
Kenneh should have had a YC for the first challenge mentioned, but cannot assume he'd make the second if already on a caution.

Has anyone seen Richard Eley before? New name for me
He’s had the misfortune to be in the middle for some of the worst performances by Tranmere v Accrington last season and Barnet this, so I was paying less attention to the referee than usual when at the latter game. Thought he was generally reasonable though maybe let too much go in the early stages of the game.

great game for Mike Barlow at Walsall. Go and smash it mate!
Saw him at a couple of TRFC games last season and was the best of the new additions to the list in those.
