There is an old Second Division game up on The Big Match on Youtube from the weekend of 16/17 August 1974 where Orient faced Manchester United. Late in the game a Linesman/Assistant was injured and was replaced by a man who looked like somebody in the crowd. He had a formal white patterned shirt and slacks on therefore had to lend the Man Utd Physio's dark blue top to prevent any clash with the Red shirts of Orient or the all white shirts of Man Utd. The referee was John Yates (Redditch.)
I would put the youtube link in the post but as a newbie I don't want to break any rules in my first post.

Hello all. Just registered as I thought this may be a good place for footy nostalgia. I am a referee at grassroots level and have been for around 20 years on and off as well as getting a few coaching badges too. Really been enjoying old Match of The Day,The Big Match and Kick Off episodes on youtube from my younger years and lamenting the old refs. They may have been part time but I still think many were better than our current crop of professional whistlers. A big Liverpool fan and from the area so looking forward to any Evertonians still complaining about Clive Thomas in 1977. Yes this really happens!
Nice meeting you all.
