Hope to see Bankes wearing black (or yellow if he absolutely must) for his SF, unlike Hooper in 1st leg who slightly clashed with the red for no good reason! Nothing wrong with his performance mind.

Good and deserved appointments. I had half a feeling they’d play it safe in Ars-Che with 1 of the 3 UEFA elites, but I’m glad to see other names.

Looks to me like Gillett with the final - outside chance for Jones, slither of a chance for Hooper?

I thought Bankes was very good in ARS-MCI, so fully deserved he picks up another big game, albeit both sides struggling. Nice game for Madley too.

Neither Taylor or Oliver (who is on Merseyside Derby) involved in Europe this midweek so would be a surprise not to see one or both of them in action for the second legs.

Paul Tierney is on VAR for Arsenal 2 PL games in a row, not an issue at all for me especially considering cup games sandwiched in between, thought this may be avoided however.

Nice match as well for Attwell to end the matchweek! Good luck to all.

If a star player misses a penalty are they automatically dropped? If a player is sent off do they serve more time than the ban imposed? If a goalkeeper allows the ball under them do they miss the next game?

You get my point!

To continue your analogy, if there are players more deserving of a start on the bench, then yes the manager usually rotates…

Hate to be negative, but Oliver and England are both very lucky to be involved this weekend. I thought the red card decision vs Arsenal was an absolute howler. The abuse was of course disgusting and of course I understand mistakes are part of football.

But it’s not the first time this has happened with these two, and there is seemingly a lack of accountability.

For anyone unaware, the FA have overturned Lewis-Skelly’s red card, meaning the decision was wrong, as everyone could see. Yet Oliver receives two huge clashes as a reward, rather than giving them to more deserving names. And England also receives a nice game. This just doesn’t sit right with me.

Anyway I hope they can recover quickly, we all know how good Oliver is when he’s at it and I see good potential in England too. I just don’t think referees should be rewarded with such appointments after being involved in a decision described by various pundits as ‘the worst they’ve ever seen’.

Good luck to all refs as always. I hope this came across respectfully.

Please let us be factual here.  Your quote is way off the mark.  The FA did not overturned it.  The Independent Regulatory Commission upheld their claim of wrongful dismissal. Fact.  The people one this panel could be ex-players, ex-coaches and ex-referees.

It would be good to separate the PGMOL from the FA when it comes to appointments of Officials on the National List and above, not the FA.  The FA have zero input whatsoever.

You’re right, it wasn’t the FA but the Independent Regulatory Commission, my mistake.

Not sure that error makes my comment ‘way off the mark’ though…

It really does.  It wasn't the FA, it was a disciplinary committee made up of 3 ex-players or ex-managers, who will have no qualifications in the laws of the game.  It is no different to an appeal committee made up of ex-convicts ruling that the original judge and jury's decision was incorrect on the basis that they have experience of crime.  We are the only country that have this absolutely ludicrous appeal system.

Plus, the red card has not been overturned, rather the suspension has been cancelled, the sending off will remain on the player's record.

But the point of my original post is nothing to do with WHO made the decision to rescind the suspension, simply the fact that it was rescinded. And whether you agree with the system or not they came to the correct conclusion on this occasion.

This conversation has steered towards whether it was the FA or the independent commission. You rightfully mentioned that it was the commission, and I thank you for correcting me, but this isn’t the issue at hand.

The fact remains that the decision was painfully incorrect, VAR was wrong to uphold it on the day, yet Oliver and England are both awarded good appointments the following week.

Even if Oliver was penciled in for the initial clash, there are more deserving names right now. He could easily have been replaced.

I hope I’m not coming across as one to just bash referees as this isn’t my intention, but the PGMOL sweeping things under the carpet and their evident lack of accountability is a big reason why the standards in this country are viewed as sub-par by many fans, in my opinion.

Once again, Oliver with a busy week. Fiery Belgrade atmosphere on Thursday night, before the big one on Sunday. That’s not easy for anyone.

Nice to see a few returning names as well, I have high hopes especially for Brooks and Madley this season.

8
Well, some interesting appointments.

Brooks not involved on the field in any capacity despite his League Cup appointment, albeit VAR in MU-Liv isn’t a shabby appointment. Perhaps they are managing him to be fully back after int’l break. Meanwhile, good to see Bankes back involved.

I didn’t even consider that Chilowicz could be involved as VAR, could be a useful asset.

As mentioned, Coote straight back in but Robinson (who was VAR) is on the boards for a SG2 referee - may suggest they are less impressed with him?

Oliver’s trip to Baku sandwiched by back to back Sat evening TV games.

Taylor on the big one no real surprise.

Overall, I think it’s fair to say PGMOL are a bit thin on SG1 numbers, mainly given injuries to some key names.

As always good luck to all, especially the two Smiths and Chilowicz who are not regular Prem faces.

9
John Brooks and Peter Bankes now have Carabao Cup appointments next week.

Good news. Both Prem v Prem clashes too.

Expect some very big appointments for Brooks this season.

10
Forgot to say, I believe Jones is in action tonight in Europa League? Not much travelling for him as the game is only in Shropshire according to my info, so I personally see this as no issue at all, but still slightly surprising he is back out on Friday.

Think it has quite a bit to do with Brooks being injured as I’m sure he was due to to the EL game tonight and would’ve had a decent fixture at the weekend.

11
Fairly standard appointments, as expected for GW1.

Barrott and Harrington probably the talking points as Ben mentioned.

Brooks only on VAR, let’s hope he is back in the middle soon!

Very busy summer for Coote and no rest it seems. Albeit he was only on (A)VAR duties but straight into the new season with a middle in the Championship - makes sense given his lack of a proper pre-season.

As always good luck to all.

Craig Pawson is in charge at the Emirates. Arsenal - Lyon.
Can’t work out his assistants/4th, perhaps someone has full list?

Cup Appointments / Re: Emirates FA Cup 2023/2024
« on: Wed 08 May 2024 16:45 »
Is this the first time a referee has had the FA cup final before EFL cup final since Jon Moss (FA Cup 2015 and EFL 2019)?

Unless Kavanagh got a double final year, it was always difficult to avoid this. Coote and Attwell would be the other options but their seasons, at least based on appointments, don’t really merit the FA cup final over others. And the 2x FA cup final appointments for Oliver and Taylor were clearly only due to Covid.

Very pleased for Madley and team. I also think it’s a good sign of things to come for Hooper that he’s 4th official after a fairly difficult season - hopefully he’ll pick one of the finals up next year.

Best of luck to everyone.

Well, I’m quite surprised Tierney has been given that game. He’s no stranger to it, and it hasn’t been without controversy in the past. Klopp won’t be happy but that’s irrelevant, what is relevant however is Tierney’s form, which has been subpar this season to say the least. This is a big game but arguably one without much on the line, it would’ve been nice to see a referee without regular big games be tested here - names like Madley, Brooks, Jones, Kavanagh, even Coote come to mind. Good luck to Tierney nevertheless.

Big TV game under the lights for Robinson. Kavanagh and Taylor with important ones too.

Coote at the Emirates again, as he was on 14th April. Not a huge issue for me but as @ajb95 asks, surely avoidable?

Oliver only on VAR after the NLD, he also has Fiorentina - Brugge on Thursday in UECL. Taylor also in midweek action with Dortmund - PSG.
Jones is ruled out of merseyside teams

My bad, I was just reeling off names and didn’t even consider this!
