Having watched both the Taylor and Oliver games over the weekend, both looked to be in good form at present. Hopefully this will carry through to further European games (subject to English teams progress in the CL) and then the World Cup.

If the argument as to whether the goalkeeper could have got there first is based on the relative distances from the ball, I think it's misleading. Cunha was slowed down by the foul and initial contact. Had he not been fouled, I thought he would clearly have got to the ball first so for me a RC for DOGSO was correct. The penalty is perhaps more contentious. The contact that started outside the area was in my view a foul. Contact continued into the area but by then was the contact still sufficient to be deemed a foul or was the fact that any contact continued into the area enough for a penalty. Not sure.

Good stuff from England apart from the obvious pull i think. Moyes whinging at the end as per usual, he can have no complaints. Wasn't perfect but certainly satisfactory and leaves him in good shape going into Sunday.
As for the rugby, let them do it and whistle it i say.
You seem very quick at times to disagree or dislike contributors who criticise a referee's performance, but personally I felt his inexplicable failure to caution the shirt tug on Amad early in the game for what was to me a clear example of SPA contributed to the perceived lack of authority later as others have commented. I wouldn't say it was a shocking performance by Darren England but imo not at the expected level for a PL referee. He's had far better games and I'm sure will do so in future.

Given the absentees through injury or a FIFA seminar, is it surprising there is no Kitchen, Kirk or Hallam rather than so many referees getting 2 matches? Another official regarded as having great potential, Ricardo, has a couple of 40 duties.

I didn't see any of the game at the time and only seen a couple of the controversial incidents since. Enough has been said about the handball given as outside the PA. Just inexplicable.
What has surprised me is the debate about the Digne YC. I watched it first at normal speed. Digne looked out of control and used excessive force. The slo-mo showed contacct was high. Surely that challenge endangered the opponent. Dale Johnson suggests had there been VAR he wouldn't have got involved whatever the colour of the card but I really can't see the case for a YC.
Perhaps I just have to accept I haven't a clue what constitutes SFP these days.
Incidentally, Johnson stated the RC that was given was for DOGSO. I gather some felt it should have been SFP and a 3 match ban.

If Webb defends the YC for that Foden foul, we might as well give up trying to understand what constitutes SFP. I wonder what the panel will conclude. Very poor that none of the onfield officials thought it a red card and even worse that VAR didn't consider it a clear and obvious error.
I remember Rooney correctly being sent off for a similar sort of foul years ago.

On RefWatch, DG stated that Pawson didn't see the pull back by Haaland as his view was obscured by Haaland's body and possibly another player. Whether that was direct from the referee or the PGMOL, or whether it is an assumption I'm not sure.

Just curious about the penalty awarded to Fulham for the foul by Maguire. My initial reaction was that the contact from the challenge was after the Fulham player got his shot away. Was this the case? If it was, I thought there was a view expressed a while back on here, after an incident when Foden was taken out after a shot, that referees rarely give penalties in those situations or take disciplinary action. Maybe the discussion then was more about whether the late challenge on Foden amounted to SFP. Sorry my memory is a bit vague on this.

Out of interest, could Tierney, having looked at the monitor, kept to his decision of no penalty but cancelled the YC for simulation? Unlikely I suspect.

This United supporter finds himself in the camp that thinks whatever colour card Taylor showed, VAR wouldn't have intervened. Seeing it in slow motion highlights how high it was but also shows the glancing nature of the contact. That aside, considering United had 3 goals disallowed for offside, at least 1 marginal, hit the woodwork twice and could thank their goalkeeper for 2 excellent saves, City might be relieved the score line wasn't far worse. Some United players need to develop a greater awareness of the risk of being offside.
Overall, I felt Anthony Taylor was ok, but I was a little confused at times what was or was not a foul and when he was playing advantage. There was a fair amount of dissent which as far as I know didn't result in YCs. Maguire and Fernandes for United and a couple of City players. I've only seen it once but to Shaw's YC seemed a little harsh. Good contact with the ball and it didn't look an excessive follow through - but then my eyes could have deceived me. But he did have a moan at the AR later which wasn't clever given he was on a YC.

Re the 1970 Eric Jennings final: I think he also refereed the replay on a very muddy pitch at OT. I stand to be corrected but I recall he must have sharpened his pencil to write a few more names in his note book on that evening.
It's been mentioned before on RtR but subsequently David Elleray was asked to rewatch that final based on the updated policies for discipline. I forget how many red and yellow cards he came up with but it was a lot!
I saw Eric referee a number of times at Old Trafford for league games. My memory is that he sauntered or lumbered round the pitch - even more so than a certain unpopular referee on here some 15-20 years later.

I wouldn't say it was "clearly" offside. It looked to me as if there was not only the offside against the defender to consider but possibly also against the goalkeeper, as Haaland may well have been goal side of him. I guess if they decided it was offside against the defender they wouldn't need to look at the latter. As Haaland didn't appear to touch the ball, and offside for interference hadn't been given on the field, it had to be a subjective decision and an OFR, didn't it? If there was an equipment failure, it still took too long but more understandable.

I think up until this point, Kavs been really good.
I must politely disagree. IMO there were at least 3 challenges in the first half that merited sanction with a YC. For example, the Linton challenge on I think Foden was the first (reckless), and then Semenyo's foul (SPA). The altercation involving Linton and a City player made it easy for CK to finally produce cards and he took a stricter line in the second half, although even then I felt City could have received 1 or 2 more YCs. But his leniency in that first half I felt was poor judgement in what was always likely to be a hotly contested game.

Hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he will be backed for the Grealish second caution, it doesn't fit with the manage the game mantra that is now drummed into all referees from L4 upwards. The proof will be how quickly we see him again in the EPL.
Sadly you may be right. In the Fulham Chelsea game, Fernandez, having been cautioned for dissent, carried on complaining to Bankes. Eventually he was pulled away by a team mate. In my view he was very lucky not to get a 2nd yellow card, but it may well be that Webb and the PGMOL prefer the referee to ignore it and avoid the red.

If I was being nitpicky, I think James could/should have been cautioned earlier than he was. There was a text book ‘standing on top of someone’s foot’ that you normally see cautioned for each and every time. But other than that, can’t fault his performance.
Although it does look like he’s carrying a few extra pounds at the moment.
I tended to agree with Dermott and Bothroyd that the James foul where he caught the back of his opponent's foot was not a mandatory yellow card. Only seen the write up of Ref Watch and assumed they were discussing that and not the later challenge for which he was actually cautioned. If MO has put on a few pounds, he wouldn't be the only person to do so on reaching 40! Still manages some fast sprints though. By the time you get to my age there's a chance you may be shedding a few.
