Out of interest, could Tierney, having looked at the monitor, kept to his decision of no penalty but cancelled the YC for simulation?  Unlikely I suspect.

This United supporter finds himself in the camp that thinks whatever colour card Taylor showed, VAR wouldn't have intervened.  Seeing it in slow motion highlights how high it was but also shows the glancing nature of the contact.
That aside, considering United had 3 goals disallowed for offside, at least 1 marginal, hit the woodwork twice and could thank their goalkeeper for 2 excellent saves, City might be relieved the score line wasn't far worse. Some United players need to develop a greater awareness of the risk of being offside.

Overall, I felt Anthony Taylor was ok, but I was a little confused at times what was or was not a foul and when he was playing advantage.  There was a fair amount of dissent which as far as I know didn't result in YCs.  Maguire and Fernandes for United and a couple of City players. I've only seen it once but to Shaw's YC seemed a little harsh.  Good contact with the ball and it didn't look an excessive follow through - but then my eyes could have deceived me.  But he did have a moan at the AR later which wasn't clever given he was on a YC.

General Discussion / Re: Worst performance ever

Re the 1970 Eric Jennings final: I think he also refereed the replay on a very muddy pitch at OT.  I stand to be corrected but I recall he must have sharpened his pencil to write a few more names in his note book on that evening.

It's been mentioned before on RtR but subsequently David Elleray was asked to rewatch that final based on the updated policies for discipline.  I forget how many red and yellow cards he came up with but it was a lot!

I saw Eric referee a number of times at Old Trafford for league games.  My memory is that he sauntered or lumbered round the pitch - even more so than a certain unpopular referee on here some 15-20 years later.

General Discussion / Re: Newcastle vs City- Kavanagh/Attwell
« on: Tue 13 Jan 2026 22:51 »
I wouldn't say it was "clearly" offside. It looked to me as if there was not only the offside against the defender to consider but possibly also against the goalkeeper, as Haaland may well have been goal side of him. I guess if they decided it was offside against the defender they wouldn't need to look at the latter.  As Haaland didn't appear to touch the ball, and offside for interference hadn't been given on the field, it had to be a subjective decision and an OFR, didn't it?
If there was an equipment failure, it still took too long but more understandable.

I think up until this point, Kavs been really good.

I must politely disagree.  IMO there were at least 3 challenges in the first half that merited sanction with a YC. For example, the Linton challenge on I think Foden was the first (reckless), and then Semenyo's foul (SPA).
The altercation involving Linton and a City player made it easy for CK to finally produce cards and he took a stricter line in the second half, although even then I felt City could have received 1 or 2 more YCs. But his leniency in that first half I felt was poor judgement in what was always likely to be a hotly contested game.

General Discussion / Re: Tom Kirk - Everton v Wolves

Hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he will be backed for the Grealish second caution, it doesn't fit with the manage the game mantra that is now drummed into all referees from L4 upwards.  The proof will be how quickly we see him again in the EPL.

Sadly you may be right.  In the Fulham Chelsea game, Fernandez, having been cautioned for dissent, carried on complaining to Bankes. Eventually he was pulled away by a team mate.  In my view he was very lucky not to get a 2nd yellow card, but it may well be that Webb and the PGMOL prefer the referee to ignore it and avoid the red.

If I was being nitpicky, I think James could/should have been cautioned earlier than he was. There was a text book ‘standing on top of someone’s foot’ that you normally see cautioned for each and every time. But other than that, can’t fault his performance.

Although it does look like he’s carrying a few extra pounds at the moment.

I tended to agree with Dermott and Bothroyd that the James foul where he caught the back of his opponent's foot was not a mandatory yellow card.  Only seen the write up of Ref Watch and assumed they were discussing that and not the later challenge for which he was actually cautioned.

If MO has put on a few pounds, he wouldn't be the only person to do so on reaching 40! Still manages some fast sprints though. By the time you get to my age there's a chance you may be shedding a few.

General Discussion / Re: J GILLETT - Leeds v Man U
« on: Mon 05 Jan 2026 14:40 »
Must say I like Gillett's style and the fact he is not afraid to smile occasionally.
He handled the game very well, but what a contrast though with those feisty games between the 2 clubs in the 60's and into the 70's when the likes of Jack Taylor had to control proceedings.  There seemed genuine respect between the players at the end yesterday with plenty of friendly chat and handshakes.

I did think Palmer was a bit lucky to not get cautioned for a challenge near the touchline but can't think of anything else.
With the Delap incident, I wasn't sure whether Nunes was cautioned for his involvement or for dissent - I suspect the former - but he was in danger of complaining too much and I liked the way Oliver called the City Captain, Silva over, to explain the decision and presumably to tell his player to cool it.  Experience and respect for a referee can count for a lot.

General Discussion / Re: J BROOKS - Spurs v Liverpool

I think I’m the only poster who said the lunge and scissors challenge on Isak deserved a red card. It was excessive force and the evidence that it endangered an opponent isn’t debatable as Isak is being treated for a suspected fracture.

Was it simply ignored because the ball went into the net? In the middle of the pitch that would have been a red card although I’m not sure Saturday’s referee would have brandished one as he missed the first and only gave a second yellow for an act of violent conduct.

You are certainly not the only poster.  In fact I thought I'd posted something similar at the same time but it's not appeared.  I appreciate that the extent of an injury doesn't necessarily imply a bad foul, but that challenge was late, two-footed, at speed, excessive force, out of control and endangered an opponent.  How many more boxes did it need to tick?

For once, I found myself agreeing with Jay Boothroyd on RefWatch and was surprised Dermott was so dismissive of the suggestion. I'd be interested in the arguments against it being a RC.

General Discussion / Re: Andrew kitchen- Man Utd v West Ham

Have to agree that not giving Wan-Bissaka a second YC was a very poor decision but I thought it was his only real blemish.
I could understand his missing the foul on Fernandes. It happens.

First time I've watched Mr Kitchen and to me he definitely looked the part.  Hope he does well.

According to Dermot Gallagher, the Arsenal players were deemed to not be impating/in the eyeline, as they peeled away.........whatever that means

I heard Dermott say he thought 'this' was the most likely of the 3 to be disallowed. Was 'this' referring to the Arsenal second goal?

Presumably the AR would have told Oliver "2 Arsenal players potentially offside, line of sight?" or words to that effect.  Unless Oliver was certain that there was no offence, wouldn't he leave it to VAR to assess?

This is why I'm sometimes puzzled by comments about subjective decisions staying with the on-field decision.
There was a mass of bodies including 2 Spurs defenders between MO and the GK so I don't really see how he was in a position to decide one way or the other. Sometimes it's not an on-field decision but no decision. Can he communicate that to VAR if it's the case?

Have to agree with other posts that Oliver was very good in this game.  He does often seem to have the knack of calming things down when handbags occur or exchanges get heated without being too demonstrative, and the players generally respond.  I noticed on a couple of occasions he took his time talking to players which also had the effect of cooling temperatures.

About 10-14 days in advance for a normal appointment. They might not know what game at that stage but will know they have a game and possibly what country. UEFA have agreements in place with various airlines so late bookings due to a switch are easy enough. They normally fly early morning - 6amish so perhaps they are the less busy flights & it always seems to be at least a 2 legged flight with a stop over at Amsterdam! A few of the flights lately have been late at night 11/11.30pm.

By normal appointment I mean a scheduled in advance one as opposed to a late change due to injury or other factors.

With those very early or late flights, I guess referee teams have to be adept at catching up on sleep.  It can't be ideal getting up at 02.30 or 03.00 on the one hand or arriving at a hotel in the early hours - if those times apply before and not just after a game.

Incidentally, from comments on another forum, it seems both Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver performed well again over the weekend.  Surely they should both be at the WC.

General Discussion / Re: Ref Watch: 27/10/25

Actually watched the last 35 minutes today.  Apart from his very sketchy knowledge of the laws, Boothroyd often repeats himself and I'm amazed the presenter allows him so much air time compared to DG. Interesting that DG actually stated that a RC for Bentancur  would have been the better option in his view. but VAR would consider a YC acceptable and therefore not advise an OFR. Likewise they would not have intervened had a RC been issued.

General Discussion / Re: IFFHS World’s Best Referee 2025
« on: Thu 30 Oct 2025 10:55 »
Have to say the 2 French referees, Letexier and Turpin I usually find very impressive. (mind you, they sometimes get more criticism in their domestic games but I've no idea whether it's justified).

And it's difficult to ignore Marciniak.  I don't see enough of the non-European referees to judge.

Sorry bmb.  Kovacs can be brilliant but from what I've seen, he can be rather unpredictable in both management style and overall performance. Perhaps that's unfair as you see far more of him than I do.

On balance, probably Letexier of the Eurpeans.
