Select Group 2 / Re: Fri 13th - Wed 18th Mar 2026

Two very poor red cards this afternoon at West Brom and Millwall for DOGSO.

I think the Key Match Incidents panel will be busy

I am not convinced of Tim Robinson's red at Birmingham alongside both mentioned above

On penalties awarded first one at Oxford looked soft at best (although great spot for the second one)
At Sheff Weds I will use that phrase "supportable" as I have only seen 1 angle, my "gut" said dive

On penalties not given I thought Millwall had a very good case, as did Swansea

Positively penalty awarded at Coventry, which on first viewing I thought was wrong. 2nd angle clearly shows stepping on the foot, well done Farai

I thought all 3 did well today, all with their trademark good communication
To me LP is the best referee in the world, hidden for so long in WB's shadow; why WR. EPR and even RFU can't see his quslity is beyond me
Ridley is growing into a very good referee and the big Georgian has settled nicely

Didn't Mark Clattenburg do a final in Europe having done a SF? May have been 1st leg?

Lester was a very well respected, white topped, white badge man
I met Tom a few times when he was assessing

General Discussion / Re: John Busby - Ipswich vs Leicester
« on: Mon 09 Mar 2026 08:44 »
I've watched the incident a few times now.

Firstly,  from the limited angles I've seen it's not as obvious a penalty as some are making out
Secondly, there is no way a 4O gives that from there, especially as I don't think there's an angle
Thirdly, by the same argument, I don't think AR1 has a view. The ball has moved from near them into the area and the incident would have happened near to a very congested offside line

Which leaves the referee. He, unfortunately, was following recent, common convention and was bang in the centre of the field. By the time his head turned, the incident had happened. My feelings of Mr Busby are well chronicled, but in this case I don't think he could have seen it. Should he be wider - maybe,  should he have seen it - probably. But having not seen it, he didn't guess
Unfortunately having had a recent, similar incident at that ground against the home team, I can understand the anger, if not how it was demonstrated
With VAR you would need more angles to see if the contact was deliberate, my guess those behind the goal, to that side had a great view!!

I'm guessing that means Gus Gardner is already here?

Some good games there for our ladies, always good to see so many out and about

8
Given the previous link between NI and Sco I would expect Andrew Dallas plus 1 to be in Belfast

9
"Those at the game felt a soft penalty award from Harry Wager for the hosts fifth goal"

Thought that from the clip I saw

10
The way England have batted today I dont think they are semi final material so would then expect both English elite umpires to feature in one or more games each

An observer once said to me "you see too much";
Things that aren't necessarily wrong but not expected by anyone else- this is my feeling of Matt Carley - he finds reasons to stop games, rather than reasons to keep it going

The vast majority of PK law is about what happens AFTER the kick is taken. Darren will be mortified to know he has got this one wrong in law and will have to take whatever medicine the FA decides that comes with that. Where was the input from rest of his team? Or perhaps 30 yrs experience "encourages" less mortals to stay out the way?

At present, as far as I can tell, there is no instance at a restart where the referee can simply "give" the decision to the other team (even throw ins have to be taken from wrong position to reverse or the 8 seconds only applies to gks in possession of the ball)

Neither combination of referees contributed to the shower of English sh*te that was on view today. In fact Piradi got a bigger round of applause than most in white shirts!!

For me, I'm not seeing red for the first challenge - yellow for reckless. I wonder if the way the Tranmere player goes over in the challenge makes it appear in one viewing like he's been challenged with a scissor action? If so, could explain the red.

Second red, awful challenge, no option!

My feelings exactly. Slid in, 2 feet, unsure where and how much contact.
Referee was very decisive so there was no way for AR2 to offer anything different.
Will be interested to know Observers first impression, what goes in report after 2nd viewing and whether the club appeal - is it "wrong" enough to overturn? IMHO no, to use the awful UEFA phrase, supportable

"with Howard Webb in attendance!"

From one bear pit to another as Webb's next observation is Galatasaray in Turkey!! Not much of a difference 😉
