KNOCKOUT (Hobart Hurricanes v Melbourne Stars)

ON-FIELD: Phil Gillespie and Mike Graham-Smith
TV UMPIRE: Donovan Koch
FOURTH: Andrew Crozier
MATCH REFEREE: Kepler Wessels

Have quickly crunched the DRS stats to date-

Holdstock (2 Tests)- 3 overturned from 8 (37.5%)
Menon (2 Tests)- 6 overturned from 14 (42.9%)
Sharfuddoula (1)- 2 overturned from 6 (33.3%)
Raza (1)- 0 overturned from 6 (albeit aided by the Weatherald non-review)

So objectively for 3 of 4 an above average rate both for them personally and for the Elite Panel more broadly

Final numbers:
Holdstock (2 Tests)- 3 overturned from 8 (37.5%)
Menon (2 Tests)- 6 overturned from 14 (42.9%)
Sharfuddoula (1)- 2 overturned from 6 (33.3%)
Raza (2)- 0 overturned from 15 (again with some luck)
Dharmasena (1)- 0 overturned from 7
Gaffaney (2)- 4 overturned from 9 (44.4%)
Obviously Raza got the Weatherald LBW wrong, but those are very impressive stats. His only other blemishes were calling leg byes before review in Sydney, and potentially the controversial Weatherald caught behind which was not overturned.

He had a shocker in the series prior in Bangladesh but has bounced back really well in an important series.

Excellent display from Kumar Dharmasena in the Fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne. No decisions overturned out of 7 reviews. Chris Gaffaney had 1 of his decisions reviewed which was overturned, but also had a good match. These two once again demonstrating that they are the best neutral umpires available for this series.

4
Thought the Weatherald LBW was an understandable decision.

The Duckett LBW just given by Holdstock and overturned was a poor decision though. Pitched outside leg and there was always doubt about height, especially in Perth (even though Duckett is short!)

I would have preferred the experienced Kumar Dharmasena to umpire two test matches. Surprised they didn't have him in the umpiring team as the experienced umpire for the first three tests with Gaffaney playing that role for the final two tests. It would have required some reshuffling but it would be possible.

I consider Adrian Holdstock to be the weakest on the Elite Panel now that Wilson is gone and would have preferred he only did one test. Ahsan Raza (who is OK but can be inconsistent) had a nightmare in Bangladesh and is also doing two tests. I understand the need to give exposure to some newer names, but it's a major series which has been marred by poor umpiring in the past so would prefer the best available to get appointed more.

As for the ashes, Dharmasena will be in New Zealand during the first test so it looks like Menon, Holdstock and Sharfuddoula in Perth. I reckon it’ll be these 3 for the first two tests, then Gaffaney, Dharmasena and Raza for tests 3-5.
That's a pretty inexperienced combo for the first two Tests of such a major series. Doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence IMO. I feel like it would have been better to separate the experienced Gaffaney and Dharmasena and have them doing one half of the series.

Also a rare home T20 appointment for Rod Tucker
Excluding COVID, I can't recall the last time an Australian Elite Panel umpire did a home ODI or T20. It used to happen pretty often in the tri-series.

8
Looks like Wayne Knights will be in Australia later in the month for some of the Australia v India white ball games given Donovan Koch is featuring in the NZ v England T20Is and Knights is not appointed to any of the subsequent ODI series (along with Chris Brown who will be in Pakistan)
Surely they give Phil Gillespie or Shawn Craig (or even both of them) an ODI debut in the Australia v India series!

9
Admittedly with the aid of COVID era home appointments,  this will take Chris Brown to 11 Tests, the outright highest number by somebody not (as yet) appointed to the Elite Panel in the Elite Panel era- he's currently level with Ruchira Palliyaguruge on 9
Surely Brown will be promoted at some stage and has to be next in line. I rate him highly and feel as though he probably should be in the Elite Panel already, yet other less experienced (and IMO in some cases inferior) umpires got promoted ahead of him.

10
Agree that both umpires were superb. Only one decision overturned and there were a few great decisions not reviewed.

Thought that the best call of the match was Tucker giving Thakur not out caught behind when the ball came off the forearm. I was totally convinced it was out live, and even on the first replay I thought it came off the glove. Even Sky showed the wicket graphic! He's still a very good umpire as he approaches 100 Tests.

Reiffel has generally been a solid umpire but feel like this may be his last year on the panel. Not sure if anybody else has noticed but he has taken to sometimes hunching slightly as the bowler delivers in the manner of umpires of old (albeit less exaggeratedly), perhaps as a kind of trigger mechanism to aid in concentration.
He's been standing like this for a while but it was really noticeable in this match. Umpires usually stand dead straight rather than swaying around, I wonder whether if it is negatively impacting his decision making because his head is out of line.

International Appointments / Re: 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Feel like it will be Tello if Chelsea qualify, or Faghani if Fluminense qualify.

Faghani has done the final of this tournament previously (2015) but the format is pretty different so I feel like this won't really matter.

13
Congratulations to Ruchira Palliyaguruge (SL) - the 2nd ODI between SL and BAN will be his 100th ODI as an On-Field Umpire 🎉.
A particularly impressive achievement considering that he has never been on the Elite Panel!

14
Sri Lanka International Panel umpire Prageeth Rambukwella has replaced Alex Wharf on field in the second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. If Wharf doesn't return it will be a Test debut for Rambukwella.

Interesting to see Rod Tucker not take up the on-field role. A similar thing happened when Raveendra Wimalasiri made his Test debut a couple of years ago.

Feel like West Indies v Australia will be all Elite, I'll predict Holdstock, Kettleborough and Menon.

Wouldn't be surprised if an Emerging Panel member such as Chris Brown travels to Zimbabwe.
