Just a general question on the topic of time wasting while it’s been mentioned on here.

Who is the most responsible for the number of added on minutes at the end of the half? Is it the on field referee - in terms of being timekeeper for the match - or does the 4O just tally up the minutes themselves? Cause I’d really like to know.

I know from personal experience that this has been delegated to the AVAR in some leagues to calculate (usually via stopwatch in the VAR booth), which is then communicated to the 4th official/Referee team close to the end of each half.

Quite beneficial when benches/the match get a bit tetchy!

General Discussion / Re: Club World Cup

As a separate point, with all the endless Law changes, there has to be some action around the process of OFRs. Lots of issues need ironing out:
- players jogging over to chirp at ref all the way to screen; clearly now coached to do it.
- ARs / 4Off practically having to wrestle players / subs / coaches away from the area to allow ref to actually do the OR, often taking eyes off the actual 22 players.
- the ref being jostled / surrounded before he can actually give the final decision.

Not sure of the answer, but a solution (other than a meaningless fine) needs to be found, as some of the OFRs are getting ridiculous.

I have also noticed the additional pressure being placed on referees in these OFR situations. For all the ridiculous 'americanisms' being employed at this tournament, I do wonder whether FIFA have missed a trick not employing the MLS approach to the referee review area, and removing it from between the technical areas and placing it behind goals/on the opposite side of the pitch. It may not be the cleanest approach, but would certainly eliminate the need to forcefully remove a number of people from the vicinity.

The issue of chirping players on the jog over to the screen is a slightly more complex fix, as FIFA will no doubt not want to avoid seeing players cautioned unnecessarily (in their opinion) to curb this behaviour. That being said, surely even blind freddy can see what a poor image it is for their newest show piece event, so we may see some action being taken on this behaviour from the second round of group games onwards.

Ironic as the FA took our previous Head of Refereeing.

Wasn't Mihály Fabián very senior there until quite recently? I can't remember his exact role but have seen loads of photos of him there. I think he is VAR project manager for Oceana Federation currently.

He certainly was, very nice man and a very good referee coach. It was a big loss to Australian refereeing when he left the federation.

I have no doubt he will do an excellent job with OFC.

AR, RA, Linos? May I throw in the alternative term of 'Hanky Wavers' some refer to them as!

General Discussion / Re: La Liga refs - boots
« on: Thu 12 Jan 2023 04:10 »
This is fairly standard practice across competitions - if the federation or referee organisation has a contract with a supplier who provides boots to the referees then they will be expected to wear them. The majority of Serie A referees wear Legea boots as it's part of the supplied kit, similarly the 'default' boots supplied to EFL/EPL referees at the professional level are Nike as per the kit contract. That said, there is always an exception to the rule, and it appears that universally Adidas are somewhat exempt from these boot contracts as they are the highest level supplier with FIFA.

Incidentally, the spanish referees appear to be wearing a brand called 'munich', who look to be a subsidiary of Macron based on a quick dig.

Some Mid-season friendly news (who'd have thought that would be a phrase) from Australia sees some PGMOL members going abroad, and one returning home:

Everton v Celtic
Jarred Gillett
Darren Cann
Richard West
Ben Abraham (AUS)

Western Sydney Wanderers v Everton
Adam Kersey (AUS)
Darren Cann
Richard West
Tim Danaskos (AUS)

Robert madley to get a perm game after the World Cup perhaps?

Do we think he’ll get promotion again alongside Joshua smith for the 2022/23 season?

I think Bobby's perm days are long gone!  ;D

General Discussion / Re: 2023 FIFA List Nominations
« on: Tue 08 Nov 2022 21:59 »
Yes, I think I heard that somewhere. I think the badges relate to the role you are doing so they could wear FIFA badges potentially when working as VARs but obviously none of us would know.

FIFA VAR's or 'Video Match Officials' as they are referred to by the powers that be are given a separate FIFA badge which lists 'Video Match Official' which is to be worn for VAR appointments. This is mostly just for FIFA tournaments where the VARs wear the same referee kit as the referees on field, for competitions where the VARs just wear polo shirts, the badge is not worn.

While you can only wear your badge in the discipline you have been awarded it (i.e. ARs on the Line, Referees in the middle, VMOs in whatever shed they get stuck in...), should a referee go down injured with a FIFA AR as 4th official, or vice versa, the FIFA badge can still be worn.

Very tight

He's offside. MM in it but a correct call. Impossible for Danny or Hessel to see in real time. Another masterclass from Danny and his team in my humble opinion. Jan made a couple of excellent calls in the first half as well. Disallowed goal for scoring with hand. Well done Danny & team. Observer will be very happy with that performance

Has Danny Makkelie got a new whistle style. He used to have his whistle on a landlord on his right hand. Now he holds it.

Yes he is experimenting with the finger thing - I don't know what it's called. First time was at the weekend domestically and then 2nd time today. I did moan at him about using the 1 handed advantage signal tonight as well!

It's a Molten Valkeen on a flip-grip! Very nice whistle to use, no doubt getting used to it before the world cup where they appear to be semi-standard issue.

Nice to whistle with but I think lanyard helps draw cards quicker.

Surely it’s not a must the World Cup. Both Taylor and a Oliver use lanyards. In fact most if not all English referees bar Mike Dean do

From an 'outsider' perspective, the whistle lanyard feels like a very English thing. Barely anyone in Aus uses a lanyard, and Jarred always looks somewhat out of place in the prem without one!
That said, maybe it's us who are the outsiders on that regard...

I've noticed Oliver carries a Fox40 classic and a Valkeen on his lanyard in some matches. I've found the Valkeen is generally easier to hear in the 'bigger' matches with jam-packed stadiums compared to the Fox40. That said, I personally find the Fox40 as having a greater whistle tone variation.

Any idea who refereed Man Utd v Crystal Palace in Melbourne? Face was not familiar and I assume it was an Australian. MU 1st goal looked a tad offside but presumably no VAR. Late red card was stonewall.

Chris Beath

Correction to this:
Referee team was as follows:
Ref - Alex King
ARs - Andrew Lindsay, Kearney Robinson
Fourth - Jonathan Barriero

Chris Beath had the Manchester United v Melbourne victory fixture a few days earlier.

I believe Lindsey Robinson went to New Zealand to be Referee Development Officer over there as she was the RDO for Northumberland FA and she was pretty good, I think she initially went over as like a secondment type of thing but decided to stay.

She most certainly did, and is doing a cracking job of it too if the feedback from my Kiwi refereeing colleagues is anything to go by.

General Discussion / Re: FIFA WC 2022 Shortlist Announced
« on: Tue 19 Apr 2022 08:13 »
Is Faghani still on the FIFA list or is he retired now? He was very good at the last World Cup.

I’d not read too much into the list because one of the referees allegedly now cut from the list knows nothing about it and is actually definitely 100% still on the shortlist so it’s certainly not accurate!

Still on the list and doing his thing in the A-League. Through some arrangement I won't even begin to speculate on the details of, he's still considered an Iranian official despite currently living and refereeing in Australia.

C'mon ACTRef, Beath has done the last two A-League Grand Finals, hardly being panned or ignored at home by FA.

Oh don't get me wrong, he has thoroughly deserved those appointments too as in my opinion he is our best referee in a technical sense, even outshining Ali Reza. That said, Football Aus are not quite the 'football public' in Aus I was talking about! Though some would no doubt disagree, when it comes to referee appointments they seem to know what they are doing.
