Problem with big screens as I understand it is that there are no screens available for the fans at either Anfield or Old Trafford. Can you show the crowd in the other 18 grounds but not in those 2 or does it have to wait unitl screens are available at all grounds. Would the audio between ref and VAR help for the crowds? My personal view is that it would not - just make the situation worse.

Non-League / Re: National League Premier (Step 1) - 2023/24« on: Sun 24 Mar 2024 19:34 »
If I might make an observation. It is simplistic I know (and you can argue about the numbers) but I think that the concept is sound.
30-40-50 years ago the Football League had 92 clubs that played 46 games on a Saturday afternoon. Those matches required 46 referees. Those referees would would be ranked 1 - 50 with a few off for holidays special occasions etc. The Leagues below that, the Southern League, the Northern Premier League and the Isthmian League(?) would therefore basically have been officiated by the referees ranked 50-100. Now, taking into account Fourth Officials, and VAR for the Premier League, those same 46 Football League and Premier League matches require 102 officials - subject to some doubling up. It means that those National League Premier, North and South are being refereed by those ranked from roughly 100 to 150. Those ranked between say 75 - 100 would not have been refereeing in the Football League and those ranked between 125 - 150 would not have been refereeing in the Level immediately below the Football League. Those referees are therefore unlikely to be of the same comparative standard as they were long ago. The Grade levels and Assessors have had to take that into account when assessing simply because of the numbers that are needed. 4
Non-Footy Board / Re: Hockey Umpiring« on: Fri 13 Jan 2023 15:38 »
Now that we have finished with the Men's Football World Cup and the Rugby League Wrold Cup from 2022 and looking forward to the Women's Football, Rugby Union and Cricket World Cups later in 2023, one might take time to watch the Men's Hockey World Cup which started today in India and where England and Wales (for the first time) are taking part.
It's being shown on BT Sport which I don't take, so I shall miss it but others may enjoy and compare the officiating, and as a result the way the game is played, with the football. Two umpires miked up to communicate with each other and the Video Official, and usually to be heard by the crowd and the TV audience. 2 (I think) team referrals to the Video umpire for decsions in the shooting circle. Green card 2 minute temporary suspension: Yellow card Temporary suspension minimum 5 minutes at the discretion of the umpire. No offside. Self -pass from free hits(kicks) - the person taking can take the hit to himself. Speeds the game up no end. There is very little dissent becuase if player is talking to the umpire, he is not involved in the game adn the ball is probaly 30 - 50 yards away and in your circle/goal!! And you don't play the ball within 5 (not10) metres of a free hit because if you do you go and sit down for 2 or 5 minutes. Enjoy everyone 5

Hi Everybody
I have been a visitor to this site for some time but thought it was about time that I introduced myself. Like Carrowman, Yellow is my favourite colour and on and off I have been visiting the temple that is The Carra, otherwise know as Carrow Road, for a very long time. My first Football League game aged 6 was against Liverpool in the old Second Division - go look it up to see how long ago that was!! I also still have the reply from the Secretary to the Football League to my complaint about the refereeing of one Roger Kirkpatrick! Football refereeing experience limited to one Hall game at University and running the line for my father's works Sunday league team at age about 11. Wider officiating experience - Umpiring Hockey since 1980 until I finally retired at the end of the 2021-22 season which includes 83 Nation League games in two tranches between 1988-90 and 2004-10 and being one of England's original National League Umpires in 1988. Have always thought that football is too insular and could learn from how other sports tackle many issues. Stickwhistler 6

Yes I am a (recently) retired official.
The answer to your question is yes and no. Yes in the sense that there is more space so that it is easier to see offences and one less thing to worry about. No in the sense that you still be blocked out by players and the distance over which the ball moves at speed - remember a hockey ball, same size and weight as a cricket ball, can be hit at over 90 mph - means that umpires have to work harder to get into the best position to see the offence and to sell the decision to the players. The obstruction rule in Hockey changed at about the same time which meant that there were fewer easier decisions to make so one thing countered out the other. The biggest change to Hockey came about 15 years ago with the introducion of the self-pass so that a player taking a free hit(kick) could take it to him/herself backed up by temporary suspensions for players within the five-metre (say 10yrd) area who interfered with that player. It has meant that the ball is in play significantly longer and there is significantly less down time meaning concentration levels need to be higher. 7

About scrapping offside - take hockey as an example. Offside was scrapped about 25 years ago. Actually the opposite has happened.
Yes some teams leave one or two forwards up near their opponents goal. As a result the defenders have to drop back to mark them. Result more space in the middle of the pitch for the rest of the team to play through. Also teams don't tend to leave the forwards up for long periods as it means that they are only playing with 8 or 9 out field players against 10 and find themselves outnumbered. 8

General Discussion / Re: Being Able to Hear the Officials During The Game« on: Sun 04 Oct 2020 15:27 »
Can I ask a question that has been bugging me for some time. In what language does the VAR communicate with the Match Referee during international and european club matches -their native language or is there a set language in which all communications take place whatever the nationality of the officials?

I suggest travel especially at the moment. I believe that Friend is based in Leicester and Attwell Warwickshire. The next closest would be Coote (Notts?) or Scott (Oxford?). Everyone else is miles away from the Carra.
