General Discussion / Craig Pawson Brighton v. Newcastle
« on: Mon 20 Oct 2025 15:33 »
It is probably fair to say that I have not always been Craig Pawson's biggest fan. However, I thought that he was excellent in the Brighton v. Newcastle match; a couple of minor "handbag" incidents were dealt with efficiently and without any use of cards. Indeed only one YC was shown in the whole match - in the 90th minute - this being richly deserved by the recipient (Burn), who should have showed more common sense after committing a series of hitherto unpunished minor infringements.

Full marks to Mr. Pawson for this performance.

I seem to recall that two of the RCs in the Aston Villa match mentioned were issued to two team-mates for fighting each other

It doesn't have any bearing on the content of the post, but I have just noticed that the dates shown in respect of this topic seem to have lost their way - the earliest comments are shown as having been made in the course of next week!  Not sure if it is possible or even worthwhile to attempt to correct this, but it may be regarded as relevant by someone in the future.

Probably best not to mention Phil Prosser in this context....

I never cease to be surprised at the amount of gamesmanship with which Martinez routinely gets away. Maupay was undoubtedly foolish to give him the chance to roll around in mock agony, and thereby to securing YCs for both of them - which were correct sanctions IMO. However, in virtually every game in which I have seen Martinez play he manages to escape with - at worst - a YC, usually issued in the 90th minute, notwithstanding the fact that he has been blatantly time-wasting since half-time, and warned accordingly, often on several occasions.

Agree with all thas been said by others. The Estonian referee seemed initially to have left his yellow card in Tallinn, but he then brought it out rather more frequently than was necessary - 12 times on the basis of the BBC listing. Extraordinary incident in regard to the first penalty, in which he firstly showed a YC for simulation, then on the basis of VAR intervention decided belatedly that it was actually a penalty, and was forced to rescind the YC he had issued in error (I don't recall having seen anything comparable, although I am sure it has happened somewhere or other). Then there was a second penalty, again on the basis of guidance from VAR; not sure I can recall two such interventions in the same match, either.
All of which endorses the view that foul detection was at best random throughout.

Not sure what this is about - nothing attached as far as I can see?

Yes Mick Bailey an excellent official, is /was  a Solicitor.  Cliff Maskell moved to just outside Cambridge but not originally
from here, Roger Pawley had a few seasons in the middle, Mick Bullivant fine linesman, might have got further  but suffered with migraine.  Cant think of his name but chap from Bishops Stortford had a number of seasons in the middle works/did work  in Cambridge.    Going further back we had Petet Bye and Geoff Roper in the middle but both moved away from Cambridge area during there tenure.  Earlier names who were on the line were Frank Burling,  Brian Chapman and Cyril Pegg, Cyril ran the line at an FA Cup Final.  Brian Chapman's daughter was one of the first female officials in the area.  Oh nearly forgot Jack Cooke from just outside Cambridge  and had a few seasons in the middle.and I went with him afew times.  Perhaps the one who the best career wad David Hutchinson whose last game was the championship decider between Liverpool and Arsenal  in the late1990s.  By then he had moved to Oxfordshire.  I ran the line to him on a few occasions in the senior local league.  All these names from the past but none now!   I deliberately haven't mention Gary Lewis.  Oops!

Referee from Bishops Stortford was Graham Pooley, I think. However B.S is definitely in Herts, a fair way south of the Cambs border

Needs ratification, but I think that David Letts final game was Watford v. Nottingham Forest in April 1983

Why not?  If time-wasting starts early in the second half of a match, and continues after a further warning, a second yellow card is entirely justifiable. Two YC offences merit a RC, whatever the precise nature of such offences. The Villa goalkeeper would have received a RC during several matches this season - but perhaps only one or two, if he had realised that this sanction would be routinely imposed.

General Discussion / Re: A MARRINER - Brighton v Man U
« on: Fri 05 May 2023 12:24 »
I have always been a fan of Andre Marriner, ever since I first saw him, many years ago, refereeing a very tricky Brighton v. Millwall match. If I am being critical, though, I don't think that yesterday showed him at his best. The style was pleasantly unfussy, as expected, but I would agree with other posters that some of his foul detection was a little unconvincing. Several bouts of simulation were not punished as they might have been - attempts to obtain unjustified penalties, notably by Mitoma and Rashford fell rightly on deaf ears - but no other sanction was applied. The Rashford dive in the first half was simply embarrassing, and warranted a YC for being so unconvincing, if nothing else. A RC for Antony seemed justifiable, as well as a second YC for Shaw.

I should also like to have seen a YC shown to Weghorst for yet again attempting mind-games prior to a penalty kick. There was absolutely no reason why he should have entered the penalty area in the circumstances. It didn't appear to me that any warning, let alone sanction was given to him.

So, whilst I still rate Andre Marriner very highly, I don't think that this performance would be among the finest of his long career. I still hope to see him again before he retires, though.

General Discussion / Re: Peter Bankes- Brighton vs Palace
« on: Fri 17 Mar 2023 09:25 »
Absolutely - arguable that Doucoure was guilty of not two but three YC offences in the first half. No wonder he was substituted at half-time.

I also had the feeling that Ayew might have been lucky not to see a different colour card in the second half for violent conduct.

Not a very convincing or consistent performance by Peter Bankes, I'm afraid.

Others which came to mind (well, mine at least) are:-

Ray Lee  (although I seem to recall that "Ray" was actually an abbreviation)
Ray Olivier
Brian Martin

There were probably others in the distant past......

I thought that Martinez could (should?) have been carded early in the second half. The fact that he wasn't directly contributed to the persistent time-wasting  throughout the half; had Martinez been cautioned early on I would venture to suggest that this would have stopped.  I don't think that Chris Kavanagh added nearly enough time in the light of this.

I Spy Old Refs! / Re: Messrs. Parker, Joslin & Short

I think that P.J. Joslin was Phil Joslin (of Newark?), who did indeed make the referee's list subsequently.
