On the crowding of the VAR screen, I don't think the referee should even start looking at the screen until the technical areas are totally where they should be. It was a terrible look yesterday having to fight his way out of the area to make his decision.

Either that or you get nightclub bouncers to hold everyone back!

So the match had:

- Extremely contentious decisions
- Ridiculous crowding of the referee when he was looking at the VAR screen
- One side leaving the pitch for 10 minutes in protest and somehow nobody being sanctioned
- A laser being shone in the eye of the Senegal keeper before the penalty
- Morocco trying to bring on their own ball for the penalty instead of the match ball
- Crowd trouble with Senegal fans trying to invade the pitch
- Ballboys fighting with the reserve keeper
- A fight between two sets of journalists at the press conference

Have I missed anything else? No wonder the ref looked on the verge of a nervous breakdown at the end!

International Appointments / Re: Womens Euro 2025 Officials

I'm sure if they hadn't both retired in the past few months both Rebecca Welsh and Cheryl Foster would have been represented. So it's clearly a bit of a time of transition.

Also there are no on-field referees there at all from Germany!

I think Attwell too - rightly or wrongly I think they might hold Kavanagh back for a year with a slightly spicier match-up

Think the refereeing across the four quarter finals was very good - very little in the way of controversy

Thought he was really good - a few tricky decisions (IFK for preventing Martinez releasing and penalty for second goal) but thought he got them all right in a spicy atmosphere. Think he'd be deserving of the final if City don't make it.

Not convinced by his explanation of the Nottingham Forest situation at all - think his behaviour in that time was pretty shoddy and don't think he's really reflected on that enough.

Leaving the field of play without permission? Doubt the referee would have given permission for him to go and sign autographs while ball was in play!

I thought Luke Pearce was superb - mystifies me why he's not seen as England's No.1

Yikes, Mike Adamson, who never really convinced me as an on-field referee having to get bailed out by Nic Berry when he's TMO. Total U-turn

Your view of rugby fans is obviously very different to mine! Can't imagine French rugby fans letting it slide if an English referee's decision let to England winning 6N not France.

I have no doubts about the objectivity of Matt Carley at all, but think it would be beneficial to have not put him in a difficult position. There are enough good refs that don't represent 6N nations (Nika, Gardner, Berry, O'Keeffe) that it's a situation that could have been avoided.

Never understood why World Rugby appoint officials for final matchday so far in advance - now means that there's an Englishman refereeing a match that could have bearings on whether England win the 6N (long shot but still possible).

It's not the first year it's happened - why not have an announced pool of officials who can make up the officials for final matchday (so the SHers can be in Europe) and then decide on exact appointments once there's a clearer idea of the final day permutations?  Or just give all the final day referee appointments to SH refs, with NH refs running touch?

Surprised that ENG v SCO was given to a ref as their first 6 Nations game - thought there were some lower key encounters that would have made for an easier entry (eg ENG-ITA or WAL-ITA)

General Discussion / Re: Michael Oliver Everton V Liverpool

Poor first half from Oliver. IMO

5 yellows... this could back him into a corner.

I struggle to see how he can be compared as a top official on the same level with the elite officials in Europe and the world. Turpin last night was outstanding.

Marciniak, Letexier are way ahead

I think any comparison with international officials is always going to be skewed as we see Oliver basically every week and will only see European elite officials a few days a year. I'm sure Turpin and Marciniak have had some shockers in their domestic league that we never see!
