Not surprised. Paul Marsden is a good referee.

General Discussion / Re: Final Game database
« on: Sun 22 Jun 2025 14:04 »
Thank you for pointing these two out. With all the comings and goings, it is easy to overlook somebody who has not been around for a while but then returns to active refereeing. I will take Marsden and Wright off the database. Incidentally, I was at the Crewe v Grimsby game in April 2025 which Paul Marsden refereed, and I was not impressed.

When does he ever have a good game?

That's a bit harsh. I have seen Paul Marsden referee on a number of occasions. He is a good referee.

General Discussion / Re: Lewis Smith - Sunderland v Preston

I thought that Lewis Smith had an excellent game and he was hardly to blame for the chaos caused by Preston North End's dubious tactics.

PNE's manager Heckinbottom is a serial complainer who whinges about officials on a weekly basis. Their message board PNE-Online was inundated with posts critical of their tactics and they (the fans) laid the blame fairly and squarely at the door of their manager Heckinbottom.

Interesting. The Open Age league based in the North West, which I am involved with, had a similar situation some 10-15 years ago.

Two of the teams were predominately but not exclusively of Asian decent and many of their players were Muslim. Two issues were raised by the clubs;

1. Ramadan - Was it possible to have games postponed when the cycle meant players were going without food. The solution came from the two clubs who offered to play the "postponed"  games midweek under floodlights (at their expense), either before or after the Holy month of Ramadan. This was agreed unanimously by all member clubs.

2. Leggings - One of the teams had a handful of players who wanted to either wear track suit bottoms or black tights (the club colours were and still are all green. I took advice from the FA who told me that track suit bottoms were out but the players could wear tights as long as they were the same colour as the club shorts. Problem solved and everyone happy.

Really good performance by Lewis Smith in the Elland Road cauldron. He is definitely on his way to the top. Well done Lewis.

This is absolutely shocking, as indeed is this whole conflict. RIP Mohamed

A fantastic referee and it was a privilege to have seen him officiate. I always thought that he was from Great Yarmouth.

Earrings, chains, watches, no shin pads.- against Laws of the game.
Mixed teams - against FA rules

But it’s for charity so ignored.

It's raised £15 million already tonight.  Would you rather they strictly apply the laws and don't get players to turn up?

Great for charity and awesome event overall.
Just would like to see the basics adhered to.

It can't even be officially sanctioned, mixed sex football isn't allowed in England above U16 age.  The FA / PGMOL will have given Abi and her team permission to referee the game, but it is far from an official game, she could have asked players to remove jewellery and not been able to do much if they'd refused.

Can you even begin to imagine the backlash if the game had been delayed, players not been allowed to play, or even been abandoned altogether, because a referee was insisting all jewellery was removed?  It would have been horrendous, this is a £20 million football game with all of it going to charity.  An element of realism and pragmatism is needed here.

Just to clarify a point. Mixed sex teams up to U18 level has been sanctions by the FA since the 2015-16 season. Ellie Hilton from Croston FC became the the first female to play in an organised league (Lancashire Sunday League) where she played reguarly for her club for two seasons.

Anthony is an excellent referee and a good guy as well. I have watched him progress from the National League North and it was no surprise to me that he excelled last night. Hope to see him SG2 next season.

I wholeheartedly agree. Michael Salisbury (Preston) is a first rate referee and you couldn't meet a nicer, more unassuming individual.

I was at the match and I thought That Peter Bankes had an excellent game.

Stephen Warnock said on Ref Watch 'I go to co-commentate on games now and I've no idea what the offside law is and haven't for the last few years'. I think the suggestion was we were meant to regard that as someone else's fault but I'd put a fair amount of the blame on him given the laws are publicly available to access and he gets paid for appearing on a show called Ref Watch.

I think it would be good for Webb/PGMO to come out and provide their views on this, and perhaps also release some of the audio of the discussion. If they're really going to make some positive changes then this would be a good place to start.

I admire Stephen Warnock for his honesty about the offside law. I just wish his fellow commentators (mostly ex-pros) would stick to giving advice on play and NOT on refereeing which many of them know very little about.

I had a lot of sympathy for Michael Salisbury who I thought got the decision right only to be thrown under a bus by Lee Mason.

To make matters worse we had Mr Sensible Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy suggesting that ex-pros should be in charge of VAR because "they know the game". It would help their cause if they had even a smattering of knowledge of the LOTG.
