General Discussion / Re: Tony Harrington: West Ham v Forest
« on: Tue 06 Jan 2026 23:34 »
One bizarre incident where VAR was called on to decide whether a Forest shot was deflected wide off a defender's hand or his leg. VAR correctly ruled the ball hit the leg of a West Ham player but the game then remarkably restarted with a goal kick rather than the obvious corner.

General Discussion / Re: T ROBINSON - Palace v Brighton

A quick post in defence of Tim Robinson over the incorrect penalty award. His body language suggested to me that he got some input from his AR. It appeared he was unsure and wasn’t going to award it but glanced over to his Assistant as if seeking advice and possibly got a word in his ear.

General Discussion / Re: Funniest referee chants
« on: Fri 22 Aug 2025 04:57 »
I was at a match refereed by Phil Dowd when, awaiting the taking of a corner in front of the away end,  a chant of ‘Worse than Graham Poll, you’re worse than Graham Poll’ broke out. Phil looked straight at the crowd, smiled and very theatrically shook his head.

General Discussion / Re: 8 seconds !
« on: Mon 18 Aug 2025 17:03 »
In the game I saw on Saturday the goalkeepers released the ball as soon as the referee began the countdown so that was great.  However, one thing I noticed was that if an attacker was stood in front of the goalkeeper as attackers are prone to do then the referee did not begin the countdown.

Is this the correct interpretation of the law ?

General Discussion / Re: O LANGFORD - Bristol C v Sheff U
« on: Thu 08 May 2025 21:04 »
I’m not a fan of Langford but think the officials got both the big decisions correct in the first half of this game.

With Walsh’s red card being overturned leaving him free to play the next match Luton have come out of it well. Had Langford correctly shown a yellow card Walsh would have course have had to serve a ban.

I’ve never really gone along with the theory that penalty shoot outs are a lottery and my feeling is that the fifth Ipswich penalty and its taker proved it is anything but.  As well as the skill of the penalty takers I believe it is a real test of a player’s mentality, a test that unfortunately for Ipswich their fifth penalty taker failed.

Agree that Harrington maintained the good form he’s shown this season.

General Discussion / Re: Sheff Wed v Sunderland- Will Finnie

EFL officials seem to struggle to identify these situations. Have seen three or four similar goals like this allowed this season. To be fair I’d say Select Group 1 referees often need VAR to get to the correct decision on such occasions. Not sure what the problem is.

A first look at Kettle Jr for me next Tuesday. Anyone got any good (or bad) first impressions?
He took a League One game at Oakwell earlier in the season and I was pleasantly surprised as he performed very well.
The Barnsley crowd is not a forgiving one where referees are concerned, but the consensus opinion of Mr Kennard-Kettle was generally favourable.

I was a visiting fan at that match and also thought he had a good game.

General Discussion / Re: Michael Oliver Everton V Liverpool
« on: Thu 13 Feb 2025 09:57 »
I wouldn’t disagree with the poster that said Marciniak or Letexier are ahead of Oliver but that’s a high bar. I’d also say that the players made the game so difficult to referee that I suspect they also would receive criticism had they refereed it.

Great game and occasion to watch though.

The reason for Slot’s red card needs to be cleared up. Surely stories of it being for a disrespectful handshake are nonsense?

Seeing Ruebyn Ricardo down as a Fourth Official prompts me to ask whether it’s unusual for a non SG2 referee to take that role in the Premier League.

Is there much to be read into Fourth Official appointments in general ? Do all the SG2 referees get a go on a rotation basis or is it an indication of their reputation ?

I don’t support either AFC Wimbledon or Gillingham but my word Sam Purkiss was poor in their game tonight.  Only goal clearly scored with an arm and watched the ball coming over from a corner taking his eye off the players he’d just warned for grappling. The defender takes advantage by holding his opponent in a headlock. Several other poor decisions too. Very good on dissent but that was about it.

General Discussion / Re: Tom Nield West Brom vs Burnley
« on: Fri 08 Nov 2024 20:18 »
It was a very poor decision which VAR would have got the referee to overturn had it been in operation but I agree it doesn’t mean Tom Nield was promoted too soon.

General Discussion / Re: Bobby Madley Hull v Sunderland.
« on: Sun 20 Oct 2024 22:52 »
I wasn’t watching the game but from the reports I read I was expecting Madley to have had a significant effect on the play leading up to the goal. When I saw the actual incident I was amazed to see how little his contribution to the goal was. Storm in a teacup.
