General Discussion / Re: SG2 -> SG1 for next season
« on: Thu 26 Feb 2026 22:43 »
I'd be expecting Jacob Graham to appear at some point, either later this season or more likely next.

Usually works with Donohue in the Championship, also Sam Barrott and Alex James in the UEFA Youth league.
Whilst still a rookie on SG2, he's clearly held in high regard.

Dale Johnson in his role as football issues correspondent for the BBC states that Referee Chris Kavanagh and his assistant Nick Greenhalgh have not been selected for a Premier League game this weekend. He doesn't say why but of course refers to the errors in the Aston Villa match adding one I missed, the potential offside of Burn for the Newcastle equaliser. Johnson then goes on to say that Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) bases its selections on factors including post-match performance assessments conducted by an independent Key Match Incidents panel, ensuring accountability for officials. There is in my opinion an implication there. He does go on to say, "However, despite the criticism Kavanagh is highly regarded and in December was promoted to Uefa's elite list of referees to join Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor." Absolutely right and he has had a long period of excellent performances.
It is time to move on, wish Kavanagh all the best of luck and hope everyone appointed this coming weekend has a good game and a bit of luck. Some interesting appointments.

Dale does some fantastic work at bridging the gap between the refereeing world and the chaos of the media. Big fan of his.

Feinting in the run-up is allowed, which is what this is. Only when the left foot plants is the run-up complete, which is an offence. It is the wrong decision.

Agree that he put Farai into a difficult position yesterday, I do wonder whether he'd had words on the one you refer to the week before, which could have led to the decision to intervene on that one.

I must've imagined the law where even if accidental, you can't prevent the ball going in the net with an arm. I hadn't seen the incident earlier when a friend explained it and I immediately said penalty & caution.

As you've both said, there seems to be nothing of the sort stated in law 12 having re-read just now, so maybe I have made that up (?). Will be interesting what the clarification on it is.

Handball law is a mess as it is without any more confusion, but if you can't score a goal with an accidental handball, I'm not sure why you should be able to prevent one either.

What makes you say the Crystal Palace intervention was incorrect?
