David Laing (Preston) was on the Huddersfield v Coventry match

Roy Capey (Crewe at that time) did Newcastle v Derby

Superb detective work!

I wonder if anyone can solve this conundrum? 27th March 1971 - Huddersfield v Coventry and Newcastle v Derby; every source I have accessed gives Roy Capey as ref at both of these games. I am sure he must have done one but which one? And who did the other game? Even the excellent English National Football Archive falls down on this issue.

I Spy Old Refs! / Re: Referee replaced during matches

Preston NE v Wrexham 31/8/1970 (Division 3)

After 55 minutes, Danny Lyden of Birmingham retired after being hit on the back of the neck and concussed by a clearance from Wrexham's Gareth Davies. Later, his replacement, Brian Wade of Leeds, stopped the game for a short time due to torrential rain. An eventful night at Deepdale which I remember well.

Reading the earlier posts in this thread and from my own research, was there a ref who had to be replaced as often as Tommy Dawes?

Preston v Portsmouth 10/2/1973

Les Hayes was the referee with Don Bond and Harold Galley on the lines.

Many thanks for this, been plaguing me for ages!

Hello everyone, I was previously a member of this site several years ago under the Username rms1709 but circumstances caused me to let my membership lapse.
My first query on returning is regarding Preston NE v Portsmouth on 10/2/1973. Despite searches for the match programme and trawling through the British Newspaper Archive, I've been unable to discover who the ref was. Memory tells me it might have been Les Hayes. No doubt someone has the answer, which will be much appreciated!
