Definitely agree with you TA_Ref. I'd forgotten about that moment, I didn't think free kick out but I didn't think penalty. They'd both been spoken too so the eyes were definitely on anything.

Hopefully the lid stays on in the second half and we see some good football

More silliness at the halftime whistle. Both teams just seem to want to wind each other up rather than play football Ipswich. Ipswich looks half a yard off the pace compared to Sheffield United.

Good caution after playing advantage for furlong in the 45th minute.

General Discussion / Sheffield Utd v Ipswich Town - Tom Nield

Seems to be a very good half so far from a referee I've not come across before. Looking to let the game flow where he can but there's some helpings of silliness from both sides,

Only thought is he appears to play advantage for the Sheffield Utd goal, which on first viewing looked to be DOGSO outside the box, yet no caution was issue to Matusiwa? Missed the replay so maybe it was inside the box, definitely an attempt for the ball so if that's the case good call.

Yellow for Walton for starting something silly after the goal spot on and Wilder in the book for trying to wind up the Ipswich bench.

Excellent no penalty call for Sheffield Utd on 42 minutes.

More of the same for the second half

I ran the line for Ipswich U21 Vs Norwich U21 in a friendly earlier this season and I'm a Level 6, both PL2 which I believe is officiated by National List middles and L2 assistantss. An excellent experience it was. It was midweek so maybe they just asked the county for anyone who was available

Certainly an evening the ref team can be proud of. Excellent non-penalty for charlton. I said no penalty in real time for Chelsea and replay would suggest the keeper got there first, but otherwise an excellent night for Kav and the team.

Edit: Also handled the situation well after some plank threw a flare on the field 🙄

A quiet first half for Kav and Co. 2 cautions both nailed on. He's blending into the background here here, making it look easy

Looks like all is well, medical staff have done well and the paramedics have taken over

A good first 10 for Kav, a good caution 5 minutes in for Badiashile for stopping a promising attack. Currently waiting on a medical emergency in the crowd. Fingers crossed all involved are ok

Might catch some hate but, when I go out on a Saturday or Sunday at grassroots level, if I can wear yellow, I won't think twice. I love going out in colours that aren't black where I can. Though black is the smartest looking colour and should be preferred

Something that was also nice to see, given recent discussion in this forum, 2 clear fouls throws penalised and reversed. Clearly, they do get given!

Whilst I don't disagree that he let a few tackles that appeared to be clear fouls, I do disagree that it's not his best. He kept the game flowing and kept it interesting, the game was decided by the players completely. Yellow card only appeared twice, once for SPA and the other for waving an imaginary yellow. I think he could have had more in the book, but it's a testament to how well he controlled, in my opinion he did a good job.

I do have one slight issue. There was an offside decision where Sesko headed the ball in Jose Sa's hands from an offside position, flag goes up, Mr Bramall plays advantage, 8s later we have a corner for holding on too long. An error in not giving the IFK straight away? Either way, nice to see the rule enforced on the PL stage

Certainly a gripping game to watch and the kind of spectacle we all want from our football, especially during the festive period. I don't ever recall watching Mr Backhouse referee but he was very impressive, I liked how calm he looked in every single scenario, not once did he look intimidated by players nor the atmosphere that must've been like a pressure cooker in the second half. I thought Coventry had a fairly decent shout after Ipswich's 2nd goal, Kipre and Sakamoto , looking at replay I'm torn and I think you'd see it looked at extensively in the PL. They all need to work on staying onside too, the flags went up a lot it seemed. A thoroughly entertaining game that all involved contributed well too.

Having watched the game on MOTD, I was shocked the handball penalty wasn't given, upon seeing a camera angle from almost directly behind Sam Barrot's head. I also thought Saliba on Barry was a foul too. It seems Barrot has hit a bit of a rut and is struggling for form, something I hope passes soon as, when in form, he is a top official. I also know how being out of form feels as I've gone through a tough patch myself recently, I hope the PGMO offer the support he needs and don't yell at him for his last couple of games.

I always enjoy watching a game officiated by John Brooks, he's a referee I always pay attention too. Hope he can stay injury free for a as long as possible as he often contributes to a great game of football

I think that he isn't necessarily letting way to much go but certainly has let a few too many go. I like the letting it go, but it is risky and it bubbled over slightly with the Bentancur James challenge
