General Discussion / Re: Pyramid Patrol 2025/26

Having refereed at Bedworth many times, I once learnt a very salient lesson, having arrived a the ground along with my two linesmen and assessor, yes we all travelled in one car, on arrival the heavens opened and deposited an awful amount of water in a very short space of time, after an inspection at 2.30pm I was left with no alternative but to postpone the game, we all therefore adjurned to the boardroom for hospitality which was well received by all four of us, after a few pints I was approached by the secretary of the away club, to request that we move the kick off from 3.00pm to 7.30pm as they had travelled a great distance, and did not fancy a return midweek journey, he advised me that he had spoken with the groundsman who confirmed that he could get the pitch ready for 7.30pm, the home secretary was not keen on the idea, and nor was I having explained to the enquiring secretary that this would not be possible, he started to get rather irate, at which point the four of us decided to make a strategic exit from the ground. On the journey home, we discussed the matter and came to the conclusion that with hindsight we should have left an awful lot earlier. The motto being don't overstay your welcome.

From my limited experience of youth football, your main issue may come from the watching parents, they will tend to wind up there little darlings more so than the coach.

Many years ago whilst referring a United Counties League game at Stamford, I was struck by the ball at it was crossed towards the penalty area, it was a very bad cross, as I was outside the penalty area the ball looped into the net, I had no option other than to award a goal. Unfortunately this also proved to be the goal that was the difference between the teams at the end. The headlines in the local paper of that week decided that the referee had won the match for Stamford.

This sort of thing used to happen and the change should eliminate that sort of thing.
My question is:-  did they give you the Man of the Match Award?

No, but the manager, secretary and chairman all bought me a drink!!

Edited to fix the quote thingamajigga. bmb

Another who was laid back was Ian Hemley, I worked with him a few times, very quietly spoken off the field, but well respected by the players in my opinion

I thought that VAR was only available at Premier League grounds, is the equipment being imported to allow VAR at AFC Bournemouth

I have on many occasions forgot to take a coin out with me, when the skippers came together I was open with them and explained the situation, I would just say to the visiting skipper ends or kick off, and that would be the end of it. If the home skipper said anything, I would just say well you have home advantage let them have something, that usually got the laugh and the game went on its merry way. The 'ivorytowers' personnel should be hanging there heads over this, surely but surely there are more important issues that they have to administer than worrying about the triviality of this. However thinking about it, it is the trivial that they excel at spending time over, rather than the important issues in todays game.
