Very very confused why a few of my review posts have been removed, so I will make one point again as it’s a very relevant one that cannot be ignored.
The behaviour of the likes of Frank (one of the league’s calmest coaches obviously), Romero and co here, was due to the way Brooks officiated and treated both captains from the coin toss and the beginning of the game with soft free kicks etc. Needs highlighting as a reason for the way everything lost control, from both the officials and some of the Spurs team. A dreadful game marred by the man in the middle unfortunately.
Very odd the amendments on this site, am quite perplexed and quite sad about being silenced like that actually.
A genuine question? Have you ever refereed a game of football? Because as I'm sure most refs would know and feel, John Brooks is absolutely not the reason for the absolute disgraceful behaviour and attitude that was Spurs last night.
I actually commend and admire John, he'd have known the drama and contentiousness that this game has caused in the past few years, and he could've snapped back into his old ways of putting on a very authoritarian display and pulling up the softest of fouls. But he didn't, and it did admittedly get a bit inconsistent and uncomfortable at times in terms of putting in a good performance, but that is nothing to to with the Spurs headloss.
Brooks gave the players the opportunity and showed respect in attempting to let them play a free flowing game of football, unfortunately the players, mainly in white, gave him nothing but disrespect and childishness back, and that is absolutely beyond his control.
Suggesting he is at fault for Spurs actions, is in fact laughable, and something that any semi-compotent referee would never ever say, I'm sorry.
I’ll answer your question first then you answer mine …. no I haven’t but I know the laws of the game off by heart, have been linesman hundreds of times at semi pro level, and have been to thousands of live games at my local team. Now my question … did you watch the entirety of this game?

I'm a little bemused with the number of comments that Romero's second caution should have been a straight red for violent conduct. The mentality that 'any force whatsoever when not challenging for the ball is automatically excessive' is a thing of the past - or the additional paragraph in the LotG regarding negligible/non-negligible force when deliberately striking the head/face wouldn't be necessary.
A player showing dissent is still a caution though, whether the decision is ultimately right or wrong. I don't think players should be excused for their lack of self-discipline just because they disagree with a decision.
Agreed for sure, albeit Romero is supposedly a “captain” so does have the right to question the official as per the LOTG. I think though, as I’ve said on this thread, if you see the whole of this match and understand the context, you’ll see exactly why the frustration boiled over in such a way. Explains it, doesn’t excuse it though.

hi,
didn't see any of the match but listening in to talksport later, they indicated that team ref had been loudly booed off at full time
regards,
gnr
Madley loudly booed off after full time at Newcastle, Brooks loudly booed off after both halves at Tottenham. A really poor day for the SG, just not good enough on the whole. That applies to on field and VAR. Shames me to say it, and certainly some players don’t help it (Gordon, Caicedo, Enzo, Joelinton, Guimaraes, Schar, Romero, Bentancur, McCallister, Bradley) just to name a few.

Brooks gave Simons a yellow before it was upgraded after VAR. Another case of a referee missing an incident of SFP in real time.
Romero can have absolutely no complaints, a complete moment of madness.
Anthony Taylor has had Thomas Franke in his ear for most of the match.
Removed not constructive .
Sorry? Romero was ‘controversially and debatably’ sent off for a ridiculous challenge by him that used excessive force and endangered his safety.
I think I’ll have to disagree with that one.
The Chelsea incident a few years ago yes, as he won the ball from memory. Was not universally accepted whatsoever.

It’s Paul Tierney at the end of the day. I’m not sure how after all these years he is at this level, when such basic errors get made by him on field and on VAR week in week out,
Newcastle’s crazy penalty award in the week, now this, what’s next for him to mess up? Such a shame, there was a good top level referee there years ago.

Would love him to book Bruno Fernandes for dissent. He keeps chipping away at every decision Andrew Kitchen makes.
John Terry and Jordan Henderson esque from Fernandes, we expect nothing less sadly.

Very competent overall from Bankes. He does let a lot go, sometimes too much, but it can add to the betterment of the game when done correctly.
No idea what Arteta moaned about after the game with “the first goal being a foul”. Convenient he didn’t mention Onana being shrugged off the ball for the Arsenal equaliser which other refs may have given, but in keeping with the game Bankes let it go correctly.

Even Dan Burn was confused what exactly they were reviewing. Disgraceful from Tierney in VAR, and from Bramall in not sticking to his on field guns. What a total and utter shambles our officials are in.

Pretty disgraceful intervention from VAR Tierney, shambles.

The irony of Newcastle players and staff whining about Areola faking cramp near the end btw, as if that isn’t what they and Pope do on a regular basis when they’re winning. Made me laugh.

England and team had a nightmare with corner decisions today but otherwise very good
https://x.com/CallumCastel7/status/1984659791873261738?t=shYPetjBiFd69cppM1aupg&s=19 Can't comment on general performance but I must say, how on earth was this not given as a penalty.
If the link doesn't get approved, you'll see it somewhere online, it's what I believe to be a very clear handball by Amad in the box that should've been a Forest pen.
It hits his shoulder first and then the arm, all during a natural action, so correct in no penalty.

Bentancur yellow correct. But he’s let way too much go for both sides in that first half. Sarr and Simons clearly fouled but nothing given, likewise fouls on Pedro and Garnacho bizarrely not given.
Sometimes you can let too much go, in my opinion.

Once again we see an official guess and give a corner, resulting in a major key incident in the game. If in doubt and it’s a true 50-50 call, with no player reactions to go from, just give the goal kick! It really is simple and avoids all the subsequent controversy Barrett is now getting.

I would go along with disallowing the goal, but where I would criticise in in regarding the collision in the Spurs penalty area as a normal coming together. The Spurs player made no attempt to play the ball but took the balance from a player in mid air and caused a heavy and potentially serious fall. In my opinion this was serious foul play and should have resulted in a red card and a penalty. As a minor aside I think I saw the visiting goalkeeper deliberately drop the ball to his feet and then pick it up again and be allowed to clear it…surely it is an indirect free kick ?
What incident are you referring to re taking the balance from a player in mid air? Did I miss something?
