Very surprised at Bankes being appointed for what has the potential to be the toughest game to manage in the Premier League this season.
Hope it goes well for the team but my Spidey senses are expecting controversy, probably Joelinton related!
It will certainly be ferocious between the fans, but I don't think derbies are anything like they used to be as the players don't really understand the rivalry. Sunderland have a few local players but not many are likely to start, and a large part of the squad only moved to England this Summer. Newcastle have Dan Burn and Lewis Miley, and no doubt the atmosphere impacts players, but it just isn't like the days when the players were all English and even local to the club.
I respectfully disagree, it's not about local players any more.
This game has always had an undercurrent of identity and culture, Newcastle taking the superior stance, amplified in a post-Saudi era.
They revelled in being the 'richest club in the world', Ronaldo and Messi would be working on the bar. Anyway, having sold their soul to that murderous regime they've now got Sunderland away. Plucky little Sunderland, irrelevant in those League One years and fortunate to get promoted. We were then told we'd get relegated with less points than Derby, then we had an easy start, then we'd not get a point in a tough run of games.
Anyway, Sunday is upon us. We have a team that doesn't need 'local lads, they get the culture, the city, the collectiveness and leadership and direction of Le Bris and Xhakha.
We've been an irrelevance for years, but we've won six and drawn one of the last seven Premier League games against them.
They are now desperate to not get beat, when it was 'I'm pleased they've been promoted, easy six points' was the condescending attitude in the Summer.
Whatever happens, I've gone since 1981 and this is the proudest I've been to support my club.
It'll be a cracking game, the atmosphere will be febrile, the midfield battle will be incredible. You should make a point of watching live, but as a positive poster towards 'Team Ref' historically, I really think it should have been Taylor. It could be a pivotal match for Peter Bankes, I hope the ball runs for him.
I spent several years living in Sunderland, if I had a second team they would be it, so I know all about the rivalry and the atmosphere. But no one is going to convince me that Granit Xhaka is going to be as riled up about the rivalry as players like Lee Cattermole and Kevin Ball would have been. And yes I know neither of those were Sunderland natives, but as Englishmen who played for Sunderland for such a long time the rivalry would be in their blood, it won't be for overseas players that have been there 5 minutes.
And to be fair, you probably want to hope that Xhaka isn't riled up as over the course of his career that hasn't tended to end well.
Once again, I'll respectfully disagree. Lee Cattermole's last Derby game was nearly ten years ago. The whole landscape and dynamic has changed since then, post-Saudi sportswashing. This will be at an intensity from the first kick I don't think you'll see in other games this season. Xhaka isn't the issue here, if Joelinton starts he's absolutely nailed on to get at least a yellow.

Red and white persuasion here. It's one of those that looks more of a pen with all the replay angles.
I always used to ask players 'what would you say if I gave that one against you'? and I think it falls into that category.
I do think we're in a deliberate phase of only giving stonewallers for handball in the box and as that means not being given on the field, it's meaning very little intervention from VAR.

It's great to be able to discuss the subjective elements, I was referring to how VAR should operate.
Given on the field, should only be overturned if clear and obvious.
I'll use the phrase, it's obvious it wasn't clear and obvious.

Couldn't disagree more. Given on the field, should only be overturned if clear and obvious. The fact he had to look at the replay 20 times would suggest it could never be described as a clear and obvious error.

Absolutely outstanding from Tony.
This highlights how poor the punditry is in the UK. This was the third act of 'simulation' in the first half from Forest. The ref spotted the other two but dealt with them by signalling for them to get up on the first two occassions.
I've not heard anyone give that additional context to the award of the disputed free kick being described as a 'nonsense decision' by Big Ange.
Even in isolation the fact Tony had his hand in the air for an IDK should have given our esteemed media colleagues a clue, but alas we get really poor analysis from commentators, summarisers, hosts, pundits etc...contact this, soft free-kick, not sure it's a foul, weird decision, blah blah blah.
Thought he had a great game, one of the best in SG1.

Interesting moment today. Martinez catches ball and tries to quickly throw to a teamate. However, he ends up making a mess of it and it goes about six feet in the air, he then catches the ball again. Been a few years since I had the whistle out but should that have been an indirect free kick???

Rob Jones was excellent yesterday, gives a game the chance to flow. Seven minutes added in second half without any significant stoppages, are we seeing an early season focus on additional time?

Remember Tony Harrington doing the same in the Hartlepool Sunday League.
Top fella in the changing room as well.

Fair to say Dave is a far better referee than he is a cricketer...!
If you're getting appointed to Sheff Utd v Leeds you're arguably performing better than a few SG1's.
Unfortunately, we never get to see him plying his trade at the SoL.

Long time lurker, first time poster.
I watched Farai Hallam at Stadium of Light last week and again on TV at Elland Road yesterday.
I like his attempts to let the game flow, not afraid to say no to the cheap fouls players try to buy with minimal contact.
Also, gets around the pitch very well.
