My first viewing of Backhouse for a few years.. wasn’t very impressed. Chucking cards around like confetti towards the end and got a few too many restart decisions wrong. Deep into injury time was the first time I’ve seen the 8 second countdown in effect since August, but O’Donnell being a left footer had no chance of releasing the ball, so should have been a Derby free kick

Wasn’t his best performance. I think he fell for a few old tricks and a couple of free kicks that were given I felt should’ve been waved away. I felt most of the cards had to be given myself.

Penalising the derby keeper for 8 seconds was a bit harsh. I don’t think the Pompey players were far away enough from him during the countdown. Just as well Pompey didn’t score at the end because I think that would have been unjustified.

Looks like everyone has missed a deliberate backpass to the Wolves goalie, which started the move which lead to the Wolves goal.

Can VAR get involved with backpasses picked up which leads to a goal.

Is this a clear and obvious error to not penalise the Wolves keeper for picking it up?

Definitely a clear and obvious error in my book but unsure if it’s in VAR’s remit or not.

I presume Ipswich will be due another SG1 visit in a couple of weeks for that game against Middlesbrough. I'd put my money on one of Pawson, Robinson, Bankes or Harrington.

I would happily take Harrington. I wonder if Josh Smith might be in line for the East Anglian derby at Carrow Road…

Royalty at Portman Road - the last time we had Salisbury in the championship we scored in the 97th minute against Southampton on Easter weekend. Wouldn’t mind something similar on Saturday. I’ll be at Portman Road for the first time since December so hoping to see a win and a good officiating display. On another note, good to see Salisbury back from injury.

Busby back in the middle this week and a TV game for Macho Man.

I expected to see Taylor for the Tyne and Wear Derby and Oliver with the relegation 6 pointer so no surprises there.

Big vote of faith for Paul Howard with VAR for Newcastle v Sunderland.

No surprises this weekend- a straightforward set of appointments.

Very good to have Oliver back this weekend after a couple of weeks off from the premier league action. A very normal high level of performance from him. Think he’s had an excellent season and refereed with consistency across the board.

General Discussion / Re: Referee Manager Game
« on: Sun 15 Mar 2026 19:06 »
For interaction purposes, what are our best moments on this game so far?

So far, Kavanagh has been slammed by managers twice (not physically, just in the media!) and Sam Barrott is flying on the merit table, with Kavanagh, Davies and Howard taking the crown in my VAR Merit tables!

Tom Bramall put in a 96/100 performance in his first game of the season.

Sam Barrott also put in a great performance and got immediately injured for 5 games 😅.

Great game to play so far. Enjoying it.

General Discussion / Thomas Bramall - Crystal Palace vs Leeds
« on: Sun 15 Mar 2026 14:58 »
Interesting end to the half at Selhurst Park for Bramall.

Think he got the penalty to Leeds correct. Clear deliberate handball with his arm well away from his body.

Potential second yellow to Bijol- for me a free kick and no caution is fine. Didn’t feel it met the threshold for second yellow and Sarr made a lot of what has really a harmless incident.

Then the big talking point, a second yellow to Gudmundsson. Firstly, I think Bramall had a bit of a brain fade and didn’t realise he was already on a yellow card. He showed the yellow and then took a long time to administer the red card. He seemed to be in comms with Tierney to double check he was already on a yellow. I can’t really tell if the challenge itself warranted a second caution. Haven’t seen a good angle of the point of contact.

🎶 “We’ve got a pen, we’ve got a pen, we’ve got a pen”🎶 - that was the chant from the away end as Tom Reeves pointed to the penalty spot which led to Jack Clarke scoring.

All jokes aside, I thought Tom Reeves put in an ok performance. Nothing atrocious but not overly good either. I felt Tom found it very comfortable to give free kicks to teams when they were in their own half but in the attacking half, it felt his level of tolerance was much higher. This felt like his foul detection was rather inconsistent in moments.

First half was average - I felt there were a couple of times when Ipswich should’ve had a free kick in the attacking third (admittedly I was at the other end of the ground so my thoughts aren’t particularly 100% accurate). There was a challenge on Hirst that took place right on the edge of the penalty area which to me looked like a foul. A couple of other interesting decisions that didn’t feel consistent with what he was giving. But he got through the first half relatively unscathed with no yellow cards awarded.

Second half was ok with a few more incidents. Burns and Fusire clashed around the 55th minute which resulted in the standard action of a yellow card for both. As a Town fan, I felt Burns was rather fortunate to stay on the field at that point because I thought I saw him put his hand on the Wednesday player’s throat in a bit of an aggressive manner. I didn’t see what sparked the confrontation but it occurred right in front of AR2 Matthew McGrath so I assume the right decision was made. There was a challenge on Jacob Greaves by Thornton which resulted in a yellow card - I think some Ipswich players were asking for SFP and a red card. I had a terrible view of that incident as the Wednesday player was blocking my line of vision for point of contact.

For me (easy to say as an Ipswich fan), I felt Tom was far too slow to punish constant time wasting from Sheffield Wednesday, certainly the goalkeeper Charles. He got away with a lot. One Wednesday defender was cautioned for taking too long on a throw but that was the only caution for that offence.

It looked like he got the Ipswich penalty incident correct live. I was looking through the goal and was on the other side of the box to me so I had a poor view. Upon watching the replay, I think there was some contact but Clarke made a lot of a little.

Not awful by Tom Reeves. I think he is capable of making the step up but needs some more regular championship games to keep on testing him. A tad inconsistent at times but was good enough in what was a largely drab and uneventful afternoon.

Nice to have a good away day too. A shame to see Sheffield Wednesday go down in the manner that they are but all the players and supporters were an absolute credit to their club today. Hardly ever stopped singing and they pushed us all the way. Credit to them and I hope they can make their way back from a dark time. All the best to them.

General Discussion / Re: Paul Tierney - Chelsea vs Newcastle
« on: Sat 14 Mar 2026 21:00 »
BBC Sport have reposted a post on twitter, saying how Liam Rosenior has said he will complain to the PGMO regarding Tierney being in the middle of their team talk.

Wow.

What a joke. It doesn’t take two seconds to ask the referee to move, which I’m assuming they did not. Paul Tierney would not have wanted to be in that huddle and neither did the Chelsea players want him there (unless they used an intimidation tactic which is ironic considering the result).

Absolute embarrassment from the Chelsea players and the manager. Maybe look at your wide open back line that allowed Newcastle to score their first.

Ipswich defender Leif Davis has been given a retrospective 3 match ban starting tomorrow at Sheffield Wednesday for an act on violent conduct in the game against Leicester City.

All I would say is that I hope the FA had better and more clearer angles than what I have seen. Nothing conclusive to me that suggests a clear hair pull.

I also love how nothing gets mentioned about the kick out by the Leicester defender.

I’m all for retrospective punishment but this does not get handed out enough in my opinion.

Sky Sports report it was for a stamp and push of an opponent in the 27th minute.

Fair enough, this is pretty conclusive. I’d like to know if this the angle the FA had then. I’m intrigued to know how they came to this conclusion because it certainly isn’t clear from the normal camera view.

General Discussion / Re: Stoke v Ipswich - Tom Kirk
« on: Thu 12 Mar 2026 21:54 »
Kieran McKenna has today came out and said the PGMO have advised him the penalty should not have been awarded.

Ipswich are getting rather unlucky recently!

As much as we have been unlucky, it cannot be used as the ultimate excuse as to why we have dropped 4 points in our last two.

Some poor defending and lack of intensity in forward play are the main catalysts for that. Of course we expect the officials to get important moments correct but they make mistakes (sometimes a little too often).

General Discussion / Re: Stoke v Ipswich - Tom Kirk
« on: Wed 11 Mar 2026 22:06 »
Going back to the penalty decision last night, now having had some time to think about it, I still think is wrong. However, I have to give credit to the Sky Sports pundits Curtis Davies and Luke Chambers who I felt analysed it perfectly.

They felt that Tom Kirk was thinking about more of the context of the challenge and how it came about rather than the incident on its own merit. I think it was Davies who said Kirk probably realised Kipre went out to try and win a ball that was bouncing on the halfway line which eventually went out for a Stoke throw so Kipre was well out of position. Stoke played it quick and Kipre was in a bit of a rush to get back and he only really made it back to his position when he committed the challenge. I actually felt Cajuste’s holding was slightly more impactful but he gave the offence against Kipre and gave him a YC for it.

The pundits also pointed out the potential foul on Azon in the build up to Stoke’s 1st goal, which for the record I dont think was a foul, which had some similarities to the incident at the end. And they felt the referee was inconsistent in penalising those specific offences when they were very similar.

As I said, no excuses for Ipswich. Air kicking and players out of position in the 95th minute is criminal and they only had themselves to blame.

Hoping for a nice non-controversial display from Tom Reeves on Saturday for which I will be in the away end so hopeful I can provide a positive report.
