Great games for Hooper and Jones. Salisbury with another opportunity to impress at Forest and Robinson makes a return to the middle after what seems like a very long absence from the premier league.
Once again, I will bring up Michael Oliver’s appointments this time. It just seems silly to appoint him Saturday, and with the PGMO knowing he has a champions league appointment, then give him another Saturday game. Just seems poor man management to me.
Whoever is in charge of the appointments can't seem to do right for doing wrong on here. If he was given a big Super Sunday fixture people would also bemoan that so soon after a CL game.
It’s not that the appointment officers always do right or wrong. It’s to do with protecting our match officials so that they’re doing their job at the highest level they can be. In my honest opinion I don’t think it’s the smarter option to give Michael Oliver a game last Saturday, have an appointment in the Champions League on Wednesday and have another Saturday game. I actually wouldn’t have had an issue if he had a Sunday game. That’s my opinion, I’m not bemoaning the appointing officers but I just think we could be smarter in protecting our officials so that the risk of injury or dropping standards are at a minimum. Look at Chris Kavanagh in the New Year period. He was given a game at Liverpool on New Years Day then had to drive down to Bournemouth presumably the day after to referee Bournemouth v Arsenal on 3rd January. I don’t believe it to be smart appointing and it’s when we do things like this which in my opinion could be difficult for referees to manage. But I won’t ever be critical of the referees themselves because I don’t believe that to be right. As some have stated, maybe Michael Oliver just wants to keep refereeing as much as he possibly can and if he wants to do it that way then I’ll respect that choice. At the end of the day, it’s his career and not mine and to be honest, he’s earned the right to do what he wants and I have my right to express my opinion on here.

I have to ask a question for the sake of my own sanity.
Over the last 24 hours, I have seen so many comments on social media (I know…) saying he had a terrible game, he was remarkably inconsistent etc. But when I was watching the game I thought he was magnificent. No thread on here suggests he put in a very good performance but I have to ask do others agree with me?

Wow! I was not expecting those. Not that I don’t think they’re deserved because they’re entirely deserved but I thought both would be in the running for the final.
I’m really happy to see Harrington given a big name clash because his form totally deserves it and Bankes is just a real top class operator who’s capable for these games but I’m amazed he’s not getting the final.
Also Congrats to James Bell and Paul Howard for excellent VAR appointments. They are clearly well trusted by the powers that be
Jarred Gillett for the final then?

Very pleased to have Tom Kirk as an Ipswich fan on Tuesday night at Pompey. Busby for us at home to Preston at the weekend, normally a safe official.
Tom Nield with a well deserved Friday night game in my opinion after his performance on Saturday. And I will be a guest at Leicester so will get to observe Kitchen for the first time this season. Other good games for the two Smiths and Hallam and another game for Corlett.

Pawson has been outstanding and he has emphatically shut the doubters (including myself) up about his appointment to the game. Exceptional game from him.

Not too sure that goal should have stood, comes of dorgu’s arm unintentionally then he scores with the next touch
Fair play if you saw that come off Dorgu’s arm because I certainly didn’t. I agreed with Tierney in VAR who said it was inconclusive. I saw nothing to suggest it definitely hit the arm.

There still has to be a handball offence for there to be a penalty awarded. I don’t believe this part of the law means that if the ball hits a defenders arm when it’s going in the goal, no matter what the circumstances, it’s a penalty. I read it as being if the referee thinks the player has made their body unnaturally bigger and it’s DOGSO, then it’s a yellow card.
I agree with this paragraph entirely. I think Donohue in VAR was too fixated with the direction the ball was travelling. Admittedly, the ball is going into the goal, there is no question about that. But there’s no deliberate movement of the arm to block the shot and there’s no way his body is unnaturally bigger. So I’m struggling to see an offence myself too. I don’t think the explanation particularly helps fans understand either. It was quite a messy reasoning given by Darren England. I’d like to hear this one on Howard Webb’s show.

Absolutely loving this as a neutral. Full of passion, tension, strong challenges and some good football.
Feels like a throwback derby with the passion being shown and the officiating from Lewis Smith.
He’s letting the game breathe and the match seemingly looks like it’s been better for it. I’ve only watched the second half but the threshold for a foul is quite high and the threshold for a yellow card is even higher but I’m really enjoying the match. Lots of confrontations and crunching challenges that have been dealt with well by Lewis Smith in my opinion.

His appointments should be spread around to all teams (bar his nominated exclusions), who have earned the right to play in the top flight, and not restricted to the top PL teams every week.
I agree with you 100% but in my opinion this needs to work the other way as well. Any SG1 referee is there on merit and so when another referee is in top form, they should be appointed or at least considered to some big PL games. If someone like Harrington, Bramall, Salisbury are in a decent patch of form, I want to see them get more high profile games because they’re in the premier league on merit. Tim Robinson is a referee I actually feel a bit sorry for at the moment - he may not have had a great season last year but recently all it feels like is he’s travelling to just hold the boards up and down the country. How is that good treatment of a top referee? Everyone is there to referee PL games so everything should be fairly spread out in my honest opinion

Forgot to comment back on this after the game yesterday. Overall, I thought Tom Nield done more than ok in what was a difficult game to referee at times. Temperatures were frayed at some points (not through Tom Nield’s officiating) but it felt a couple of times he struggled to show a bit of authority. Especially at half time when there seemed to be a bit of confrontation between the players and then he seemed to chase after them as they went down the tunnel. But as I said, the player behaviour was not down to Tom Nield’s officiating.
Onto the actual game and incidents themselves, I didn’t really like the level of physicality that Tom let go at times but he was consistent with that so I can’t really argue. There were times where I didn’t feel like players could be strong in aerial challenges because they were given as fouls. Also, was very keen on trying to play advantage and he did play some excellent ones at that.
First incident was the potential Ipswich penalty for sustained holding as mentioned in an earlier post. I wasn’t certain but the sky sports pundits and Mike Dean were adamant it was a penalty.
Next was what ignited the spark between the two sides, Sheffield United’s first goal. As O’Hare rolled the ball past Walton in the Ipswich goal, Tom Nield did signal some form of advantage so I don’t know if he was taken out after the ball was played but also Christian Walton did raise his leg, I believe in an attempt to save that ball, which I believe unintentionally hit O’Hare in the face. I think Chris Wilder and many Sheffield United players were upset by this but I thought it was just a natural coming together which sometimes happens in football. Walton was booked in the aftermath.
Then Ipswich penalty for handball - good decision, clearly struck a raised Sheffield United defender’s arm so correct outcome.
And finally, Bamford’s second yellow for simulation. Cameras didn’t particularly show a great angle for this but it did look like he dived so well done to Tom Nield for correctly identifying simulation and penalising it appropriately. If I’m being honest, I had no idea what Bamford’s first yellow card was for. Only looked like a small foul but doesn’t excuse diving on a yellow card so he can have no complaints.
So overall, Tom Nield can be happy with his performance in a difficult and ill tempered game that had its moments.

Correct penalty decision for handball. Temperatures still very high. Nield doing well.

I’ve been watching this one. I think Tom Nield’s been ok but temperatures are rising and he might struggle to keep a lid on things in the second half.
Sky Sports (Mike Dean and Kris Boyd) seem to believe Ipswich should’ve had a penalty for some prolonged holding by Hamer on O’Shea but Nield gave a free kick to the hosts. I wasn’t certain myself but when do those get given anyway. All forms of wrestling is allowed this day and age.
Both sets of players and coaching staff are having their moments. Ipswich should be looking at no one other than themselves because they’ve been dreadful.
Nield has been decent but could be a challenging half to come.

Not seen the incident but fair play to Farai Hallam, on his PL debut, has stuck with his onfield decision after being sent to the monitor by Darren England for a handball incident.
