General Discussion / Re: C PAWSON - Arsenal v Man U

Not sure about the possible penalty for hand ball by McGuire. In my opinion he was not falling and breaking his fall, but trying to block and extending his body size.
On the other hand it was great to see throw ins taken from roughly the right place and the game allowed to flow.

If Sky News is to be believed there will be no further action taken by the FA because the referee saw it and dealt with it.
So we have the stupid situation where a player can be sent off by a referee who has seen a situation an dealt with it, but the player can appeal that the referee has made a mistake and request the decision be overturned, but the FA can do nothing if it thinks the referee has erred.
It makes you realise what FA really abbreviates.

It is really absurd that the FA can do nothing if the referee has made a mistake in being lenient, but can overturn a red card if it should have been yellow. Someone somewhere has been conned into this situation and it is time to correct it.
Presumably the same absurdity applies to the Middlesbrough incident, although for that one there must be a case for police involvement.

Proof, if proof were needed, that the referee was correct to play on.

I think the emphasis should be on both obvious and opportunity with both carrying equal weight. It doesn’t have to be a sure goal but just the reasonable ability to have a shot. After all we see some wonderful goals scored from very difficult locations.
Of course we are led to believe that the Premier League has a substantial shareholding in PMGOL and does not want sendings off, which may of course be disinformation, but might explain to some extent the reluctance of some referees to issue red cards.
It does make life difficult for those in the lower echelons of refereeing however.

Could/should have been a red for sfp by taking out a player in mid air. It’s happening too often and is very dangerous.

The number of cards is not an indicator of his performance, but rather of what was at stake for both teams. I do feel that some of the enforced positioning left him guessing for throw ins and he generally chose, wisely, to give them to the defending team. I still prefer referees to run diagonals to be nearer incidents.
My only real criticism would be the incident where the Sutton striker injured the Shrewsbury goalkeeper by sliding in when he was on the floor. There was nothing deliberate about it but he arrived after the keeper had palmed the ball away and could have done serious damage. I was amazed when play restarted with a corner rather than a fee kick. In tight matches it’s things like that that can make a difference, particularly with the fair cautions for other late tackles.

I’m sorry, but if you are going to allow that incident to go unpunished then you might as well have scrums instead of corners. When VAR was brought in we were promised it would get rid of these skirmishes and when it happens it’s branded disgraceful.
There was no intention of playing the ball but simply making sure that the opponent nd once the arms were used for me it was a clear penalty. I don’t blame the referee for not seeing it, there is too much going on at corners for everything to be seen and in this case I am glad VAR intervened.

Society has changed since I refereed but I would simply ask what would happen if ambulance staff got back in the ambulance and drove away if they were abused. Can you imagine the response in the press? Or DWP workers closed the office because someone had been abused ?
Remember the players had done nothing wrong and they were deprived of their game.
I accept that I am too old to make judgement on this changing world.

Six pointer at the bottom of div2 surely deserves a calm experienced hand. Is it really his first EFL match ?

For me the problem is that the AR thinks that Roberson was in the line of sight…a very difficult decision to make from his angle. The video clearly shows that this was not the case, the keeper had a clear view and did not delay his dive to see if Robertson played the ball. The referee has a better sight line and should, in my opinion, have been sent for an OFR if he was in doubt, the AR’ s opinion on sight lines is not far off useless from his angle. I wish the conversation could be about the high quality of Manchester City, but the imperfections, or possible imperfections, in the VAR system take the headlines away. The promise of perfection has not been realised and the holding and pushing in the penalty area goes on despite the early promises. The number of referees required for VAR and 4th Official duties is impacting lower down the leagues where the standards have clearly dropped imo.
Like others I think that Kavanagh is a good Ref, but sending him to do this match has left him vulnerable to criticism based on geography….I have just returned from a day in Liverpool and believe me it is so.
Were there no other referees capable of refereeing this game ? Or is PGMOL totally insensitive to the additional pressures involved ?

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Shrewsbury Town FC (First Team)     Live on SkySports+
Football League 2
Referee: Reeves, Tom
Assistant Referee: Aldred, Ryan
Assistant Referee: Hunt, Jonathan
Fourth Official: Watson, Dean

An excellent performance from Tom Reeves in the Cheshire sunshine. Always was looking for advantages to play and brought them back if nothing occurred. Was always happy to speak to players to explain decisions. Consistent in what he was giving - didn’t give many soft fouls to try and let the game flow which worked.

The only downer, not to the fault of any officials, was after Crewe scored their 3rd, AR2 seemed to be in a bit of bother. He pointed towards the Shrewsbury end so it seemed like something had been thrown at him which is a real shame and I hope that so called “fan” gets found and dealt with in the correct manner. Tom dealt with this situation amazingly, by speaking to his AR, then going over to the managers and head steward to explain what happened.

I expect to see him on more championship games in the near future. Well done to the match officials.

I can understand your satisfaction, and certainly he did nothing to alter the result of the match, but I found his performance unsatisfactory. I know he can’t help ploughing a furrow up the middle, it’s the modern way, but it carries an obligation to keep out of the players way. Three times he slowed down attacks by making a player change direction to avoid him.
His alleged search for advantage involved stopping a quick break and awarding a free kick for offside to the team on the break.
I am not sure, and nor can you be, that he was explaining decisions. All we can know is that he spoke to them and he maybjudtvasveasiky been telling them to shut up or be booked.
I have not seen so many blatant pushes go unpunished but for me his major foul up was to award a free kick for slowing down the restart when the “offending. “ player was two yards outside the penalty area and static. He fell completely for the complaint of the keeper and should have awarded a corner if my reading of the new provisions is correct.
As an away fan I also object to your assumption that something had been thrown. I agree that if something was thrown the guilty party should have action taken against him or her, but let’s not jump to assumptions, it may have been something entirely different.
I have our Mr Reeves apron my list alongside Mr Ward of referees I hope get or remain promoted, as it is unlikely that I will see him again in that eventuality, but sadly it’s not something I would expect based on Saturday.

Never mind banned for life, he should also be helping to overfill our prisons.

I would go along with disallowing the goal, but where I would criticise in in regarding the collision in the Spurs penalty area as a normal coming together. The Spurs player made no attempt to play the ball but took the balance from a player in mid air and caused a heavy and potentially serious fall. In my opinion this was serious foul play and should have resulted in a red card and a penalty.
As a minor aside I think I saw the visiting goalkeeper deliberately drop the ball to his feet and then pick it up again and be allowed to clear it…surely it is an indirect free kick ?

The incident occurred towards the end of the match in the Tottenham penalty area.
