Non Footy Appointments / Re: Big Bash League 2025/26
« on: Tue 20 Jan 2026 02:55 »
Finals have rolled around, which give a good indication of the local pecking order-

Qualifying Final (Perth v Sydney Sixers)

On field: Nogajski and Abood
3rd: Treloar
4th: Penman
Referee: Fry

Nothing yet for tomorrow night but presuming we will see Koch and Gillespie then

How interesting - seems like a rather silly appointment from the icc now, given his lack of on field.

Perhaps reflective of the lack of last minute options to fly someone else in after the situation developed given home internationals in Sri Lanka and domestic cricket elsewhere

Seems like the issues between two nations have kept Saikat for only off the field duties like TV umpire. This is probably because ODI needs two neutral appointments.
I don't find any other reason than this or him being actually physically unfit.

Seems a bit of a strange way of doing things if they are wanting to keep him out of mind/sight- sure he's not standing on the field, but he's also the effective final arbitrator whose voice blares out around the ground during reviews..

India v New Zealand- 2nd ODI, Rajkot

Onfield: Sharfuddoula (probably) & ?
3rd: Illingworth (probably)
4th: ?
Referee: Srinath (probably)

The ICC keeping us updated promptly as always

I can’t help thinking Illingworth, Reiffel and Tucker will all retire by 2027 so it will be interesting to see if ICC manage one of them out after the World Cup so they don’t have 3 experienced officials leaving at the same time. Tucker is 62 this year so I expect he will umpire his 100th test and then retire early in 2027. illingworth is currently on 82 tests but due to his age he will have to leave the panel by 2028 at the latest (turning 65 that year) and I can’t see that there will be enough appointments in the next 2 years to allow him to get to 100 tests. Therefore he might retire after 82 tests rather than been forced to retire in the 90s. Unless he wants to equal tests with the great David Shepherd. Reiffel is slightly younger but would need at least 3-4 more years to get to 100 tests, which seems unlikely. I wouldn’t be surprised if he decides to retire at the same time as Tucker as they both commenced their umpiring journey at the same time.

Interesting- I thought I recalled someone saying that Ian Gould in his book said there was now a perhaps informal retirement age of 62(?) as opposed to the previously publicised 65. Tucker still seems to be in top form so hopefully he at least gets to stay for his ton.

Meanwhile Hemantha Boteju became the 3rd Sri Lankan T20I debutant of the series in yesterday's game, further adding to the intrigue re: the International Panel there

Have to say that the standard of umpiring in the Ashes so far hasn’t been great. Nitin Menon has been particularly disappointing compared to his performances over the last few years. What has been particularly disappointing is that many of the decisions haven’t been 50-50 calls with a small edge, glove near pads etc but instead have been howlers, big inside edges, balls going way down leg side, pitched outside leg or bat nowhere near the ball. All four of the umpires so far have had at least one of these howlers. Let’s hope it improves when the more experienced Gaffaney and Dharmasena take over in Melbourne.

Have quickly crunched the DRS stats to date-

Holdstock (2 Tests)- 3 overturned from 8 (37.5%)
Menon (2 Tests)- 6 overturned from 14 (42.9%)
Sharfuddoula (1)- 2 overturned from 6 (33.3%)
Raza (1)- 0 overturned from 6 (albeit aided by the Weatherald non-review)

So objectively for 3 of 4 an above average rate both for them personally and for the Elite Panel more broadly

Final numbers:
Holdstock (2 Tests)- 3 overturned from 8 (37.5%)
Menon (2 Tests)- 6 overturned from 14 (42.9%)
Sharfuddoula (1)- 2 overturned from 6 (33.3%)
Raza (2)- 0 overturned from 15 (again with some luck)
Dharmasena (1)- 0 overturned from 7
Gaffaney (2)- 4 overturned from 9 (44.4%)

1st T20I: Sri Lanka vs Pakistan (7:00pm local time)
Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium

On-Field Umpires: Chamara De Zoysa (Sri Lanka), Ravindra Kottahachchi (Sri Lanka)
TV Umpire: Raveendra Wimalasiri (Sri Lanka)
Reserve Umpire: Hemantha Boteju (Sri Lanka)
Match Referee: Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka)

So, 3 new faces for the opening T20 International. It appears Prageeth Rambukwella has been appointed to the U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe/Namibia later this month, Ruchira Palliyaguruge has either retired or prioritised Bangladesh Premier League duties and Lyndon Hannibal has left the ICC International Panel, paving the way for opportunities within the Sri Lankan umpiring ranks.

Wonder if this is a reflection of De Zoysa also being promoted or a de facto audition like with a non panel umpires in Australia doing T20Is a couple of summers ago

Hyperactive hypercommercial hit and giggle pyjama T20 returns tonight in Australia-

Match 1
Perth v Sydney Pink Franchise (Sixer)
On field: Koch and Abood
TV: Penman
4th: Roberto Howard
Referee: Charlie Mackay

Saikat’s generally better than Joel Wilson and did make some decent decisions in this game but I’ve noticed he often lets himself down with a howler most matches. The Brooks out decision was a shocker, even the Australians barely appealed. Not sure he will survive on elite panel for long unless there are retirements

I think he's generally reasonable but occasionally gets overawed; seemingly the case with the Brook two in two balls this match, and also gave a not very good LBW on his first ball standing in the Australia v West Indies Test early last year which was clearly nerves. Hope he gets to succeed after a long journey to the Panel.

12
Meanwhile, if we are to use the blunt measure of DRS success, Sam Nogajski has just concluded another impressive audition for future elevation in Bangladesh, with 11 out of 12 reviews of his decisions struck down

13
I would have preferred the experienced Kumar Dharmasena to umpire two test matches. Surprised they didn't have him in the umpiring team as the experienced umpire for the first three tests with Gaffaney playing that role for the final two tests. It would have required some reshuffling but it would be possible.

I consider Adrian Holdstock to be the weakest on the Elite Panel now that Wilson is gone and would have preferred he only did one test. Ahsan Raza (who is OK but can be inconsistent) had a nightmare in Bangladesh and is also doing two tests. I understand the need to give exposure to some newer names, but it's a major series which has been marred by poor umpiring in the past so would prefer the best available to get appointed more.

Dharmasena posted on his social media that he had been recovering from an injury hence his absence from any appointments since July until his current NZ trip, so perhaps that was the basis for him not featuring early whilst he eases back in. Anyway, nearly time to see how all involved go, hoping for solid performances all round.

14
Richard Illingworth has gone from the best to almost the worst umpire on the elite panel within 6 months. Reminds me of what happened with Steve Bucknor. Some of his decisions overturned in Bangladesh weren’t even close on the naked eye. At his age he really should have retired after the WTC final in his home country. Surely he’ll call it a day after next year’s T20 World Cup?

Hope he gets to go out on his own terms given the cred he's built as one of the best. I only saw the first LBW of the Ireland innings which was a definite doozy; other than that, in fairness to him it's a rare performance not to have at least couple overturned on a turning track on the subcontinent

Sorry guys for the wrong information.
But at the start of the game , Commentators told  that Asif Yaqoob is the Third umpire. So I have put the information here.

Think this was probably correct given Saikat presumably has to be in Perth at least a day or two before Friday- tbh would probably rely on the comms at the match over the ICC or even Cricinfo
