Title: Saracens vs Exeter Chiefs - Gallagher Premiership Final - Wayne Barnes
Post by: RCG on Sun 02 Jun 2019 09:25
What an atmosphere, what an occasion and what a match. If you get chance to just see the opening 10 minutes you will understand the spectacle that is top flight English rugby. 2 tries, a yellow card and a penalty all before 10 minutes had elapsed.
They say sometimes in sporr its the hope that kills you and it was the case yesterday. 2 scores clear with 20 odd minutes to go and Exeter thought it was done. Sarries, however, did what they do best - upped the intensity, the speed, put pressure on where they had not been able to before and squeezed, ending up deserved winners.
In the midst of this was the cool, calm, experienced head of Wayne Barnes. Led his team very well, certainly got all the big decisions right (the 2 yellow cards being dealt to current England players). His presence on the field will be missed.
From a fan's perspective there were one or two scrum offences that seemed a bit random but ultimately Barnes was able to let the players get on with it.
Proud of the Chiefs, we are getting closer. Privileged to watch a master at work (again). The others have a lot to aspire to as the race to Twickenham 2020 will be an interesting one for the referees too

Well done to both teams and best wishes to Wayne Barnes who for some years now has been streets ahead as English rugby's top official.
