Title: Sunderland v Sheffield United Matt Donohue
Post by: Joecphillips on Wed 15 Mar 2023 21:27
Offside missed for the 2nd goal
Var would have gave a penalty for hand ball

Not having a great game

Definite offside for 2nd Sheffield goal. The officials should have got it right. Poor.

I thought over the last couple of seasons prior to the current one that Matt Donohue would have been a shoe in for promotion to SG1 his appointments and performances were certainly big ones and frequently but this season he seems to be struggling for form and has missed clear cut decisions and seems short of confidence and as a result it would seem Bond, and Robinson have overtaken him

Sunderland not having much luck with referees lately. I don’t support them but have seen them get the rough end of the stick with decisions in three matches on TV recently.

Agree with the previous poster about Donohue. Last season I thought he was certainly well in the top half of SG2 referees. Well down the order this season.

Ans yet he's still been getting good appointments, such as last night's and the recent Cardiff v Bristol City game.

He missed two blatant penalties (one for each team), in the televised game last Friday

A season ago I commented that I thought he was poor but others defended him and I freely admit I was commenting on 1 game. Last night he was poor and I felt for Sunderland. Sheffield United were good but even their manager admitted that had the shoe been on the other foot he would have claimed offside. A bit of luck after a few unlucky decisions.

Apparently Donohue got word into the Sunderland dressing room via a member of the coaching staff to apologise for allowing the goal to stand.

In a perverse way that makes it even worse.

I ran the line to Donohue in 2011. I found him to have the personality of a spade.

That said he has achieved much more in the game than I have so fair play to him.

Indeed fair play to him, in refereeing a match he calls it as it is.
