An early promotion for Bobby Madley I see, I wonder if we will see the brothers him and Andy work together some point during the season either one as FO and ref or one as ref and VAR

With 8 referees in Europe on Thursday, and Harrington/Marriner seemingly on the sidelines for now - I'm not hugely surprised they've gone with SG2 for one of the games this weekend.

More than likely unrelated. I believe he only does 3 out of every 4 weekends/matchdays so it could be a planned absence.

There is an SG1 scheduled in the Championship though in the Bristol City vs Swansea game

Very happy to see Bobby Madley back in the Premier league. I don't know everyone's views on the situation that lead to his sacking, but I didn't think at the time that he should have been sacked, but he dealt with it well and has built his way back up.

Also is this just one of those test games they do or will this be a mid season promotion? Do SG1 and sg2 do mid season promotions?

I think maybe a bit soon for Bobby Madley to have a PL game, as he was only promoted back to SG2 in the summer I believe.

Another good game for Rob Jones and good to have John Brooks on a live TV game.

Kavanagh and Tierney together again.

Good to have Marriner back.

Great to see Bobby back.

In my opinion the punishment for his "crime" was completely unproportionate and excessive in the extreme.

Yesssssss Bobby Madley back 👊🏻😍 totally deserved even if only a trial game, but is this something of a Webb doing ? His only got a few weeks until he starts ? In MLS Webb used quite a few different refs on trial games and if good enough they got a few More. But fully expect to see Bobby back on FIFA soon though. Someone who made big decisions is what I remember him by.

Well the big wigs at FA HQ have finally got their way. You didn’t need to be a genius to see that they have been opening up a pathway for the return of Bobby Madley in the last few years since he returned cap in hand from Norway. To me it was only a matter of time before he got back into the PL.
I don’t share the euphoria which many seem to have at his return. My views on his original “misdemeanour” have been clearly stated before. To me he is very lucky to have got back where he is. I also feel he is vastly overrated as a referee.
I can now see the F A trying to find a way of getting him back onto FIFA before it’s too late which would be the final straw.
Sorry Bobby Madley fans out there but that’s my feelings and I’m sticking with them

Michael Oliver refereeing Liverpool vs Leeds at Anfield 3 years in a row. How very predictable and disappointing - he has awarded Liverpool 4 penalties (some arguably very soft) in the previous 2 fixtures at Anfield so get your bets in time for kick-off!

Oliver with 3rd Liverpool game and only did them 3 weeks ago. Same for Taylor at Tottenham (NL Derby). Back to normal with the appointments. SOme get a game 1 week and then 0 the next, whilst some go on a run of 3-4 weeks in a row. Disappointing

Good to see Bobby Madley back.

Shocked that Oliver has Liverpool again, he only had them 2 weeks ago.  Hopefully a better performance this time. Shame the PGMOL don’t realise that other referees are available for Liverpool vs Leeds at Anfield.

Tierney working with Kavanagh again. Bad thinks seem to occur when those two work together.

Good that Marriner is back.

Shame no game for Gillett.

Madley, Jones and Hooper with good games again.

The number of referees out in Europe on Thursday will have been a limiting factor in Saturday's appointments.  Assuming Harrington/Marriner weren't getting a game due to being out (Marriner seemingly on the comeback though), the following were available for Saturday:

Tierney
Taylor
Oliver
Madley
Jones
Salisbury
Brooks
Bramall
Scott (not sure if he was available as he's not been given anything at the weekend)

Apart from Bramall/Scott, everyone else has a game in the middle.  Depending on how they view Liverpool v Leeds, there's an extremely limited choice for that game, and Tierney/Taylor have both had Liverpool more recently than Oliver.

I’m in total agreement with Hendo (sorry, I still can’t quite work out how to reply to an individual post. I still suffer with severe technophobia!) No idea why the unadulterated joy at Bobby Madley being back? A very limited referee in my opinion, who used to get pelters on here when he was a regular in the Prem. It’s a mystery to me, but each to their own, obviously. Good luck to him, hope he does well this time around, but I stand by my belief that he’s just not up to it at that level

Good to see Bobby madley  hopefully this is a test game before confirmation of a promotion and then a run of prem games
Might then lead to being on the fifa list like he was before and then being in the middle for UEFA comp games/fifa qualifiers
Any thoughts?

I'm all for giving people a chance of redemption so good luck to Bobby Madley on his chance. I don't think he was ever an outstandingly good referee, though clearly he has some powerful Patrons probably on the Yorkshire Refereeing circuit, and so I think his re-appearance in SG1 is not really in doubt and will surely happen though I think his FIFA badge has probably gone down the swanee for good.  I don't think the current standard of much of the SG1 is so good that Madley will look out of place.

I saw him referee at The Valley earlier this season. I have never met him so can't comment on his personality, off the pitch he may be a shrinking violet, but on it his was a very egoistical style of refereeing making much of the game about himself. It's one way of doing it but doesn't happen to be a way I like or admire.

Here’s a question I want to pose to the people of this forum, so you think that the reason that Bobby Madley was the SG2 referee that was sent to the premier league today was because he has used var in the past, the reason I say this is because there was an incident in his game today that he clearly didn’t see in real time the headbutt by Costa, it was shown on MOTD that he didn’t see as he was looking at play, he was sent to the monitor and rightly sent off Costa, and for this point do you because I certainly feel this way that is the reason that Bobby wasn’t sent to the premier league today because of his knowledge of var, and a lot of the other SG2 referees hasn’t used var yet
Title: Re: Sat 29th & Sun 30th OCT 2022
Post by: greeny on Sun 30 Oct 2022 06:12
Bobby was removed from SG1 before VAR was introduced, so that wasn't the reason.  I think it is a combination of 2 factors - they want to try him out on a game with a view to promotion next year (and I would expect Josh Smith to get a trial game at some point as well).

The second factor is a lack of available referees for today: Harrington/Marriner not available for a PL game (Marriner on come back though) due to injury, and 8 referees not available in the middle due to being in Europe on Thursday night.  They generally don't appoint anyone who has been in Europe on Thursday to referee a game on the Saturday (hence 6 of them were VARs and 2 were 4th officials).

Did he not use it when he was referring elsewhere that’s what my bought process was, I know he was removed before var came in over here but he could of used it in Norway

The only other three SG2 officials who’ve had at least one PL game was Robinson, Langford and Stroud.

So it was either Madley, whom was a FIFA official, the above three or a brand newbie.

PGMOL wouldn’t have thrown a newbie straight in there just yet at this stage of the season.
